Peacock Mantis Shrimp Care: Tank Update, Big News!

In this video I want to introduce you to my new peacock mantis shrimp Bruce II! I will also take you on a tour of my tank one year on from setting it up detailing a few upgrades and introducing the new fish and corals I have added to the aquarium in recent months.

I've gone on a binge of these videos. Before this I'd only ever seen empty tanks with rocks but this setup makes me want to try my hand at a mantis shrimp one day

So good to see proper care of these amazing creatures. I don't currently keep fish but did for years, they can be so rewarding. I really don't understand some video's I see and the state of the tanks, ok its takes a bit of effort but once you have a proper cycled and eco system going the effort to keep it really isn't that much. Best of luck to you and the new editions, it was sad to hear about the cutting of punchers but glad to see him doing well. Please keep these updates coming.

A mantis shrimp would be my dream pet! I've never had an aquarium before, so I will probably start off with a something easier like a kuhli loach, but we all have to start somewhere. Eventually graduate to more difficult species, but these kinds of videos inspire me to take up the hobby! Much love, and LONG LIVE BRUCE II!!!

So glad you are back! Because of your series, I ended up picking up a juvenile 4" Peacock. I learned a lot simply from watching this video. Much appreciated. My guy has been hiding in his tube for a solid 2 weeks. Coming out at night and taking the clam on the half shell away to his lair. I'm hopeful he starts poking out soon for us to enjoy as well. Keep posting!

Handsome devil! Tank is looking good too, but keep an eye on that cotton candy algae, it's a real pain when it gets out of control, and sort of crashed one of my tanks a few years back.

Bouncing back! You love to see it. Seeing mantis shrimp without their smashing dactyls makes me very sad and angry that people would mutilate something just to make collection and transport easier. There's always the caviat that they'll grow em back but I think that's hardly an excuse. Bruce Jr. looks like he's doing very well now however :) I actually got another peacock mantis this last Wednesday! It's nice to hear that clicking again. Congrats on 900 subscribers! Maybe give lil Bruce some special treat or something, or maybe a tips n tricks video about caring for stomatopods.

I only feed my little Bingo ( mantis) shrimp .I bought at market.. he is very happy to living with corals 75 gallons and 5 small fish.

Hey there! Love your videos, highly inspired me to buy my own peacock mantis shrimp! As far as the pvc pipe goes, did you glue his tubes together? I used an aquarium safe silicon (GE sil 2) for my little guys cave system. Or did you just simply plug them in to one another, in fear the chemicals would harm him? Thanks in advance for your advice and keep up the wonderful videos!

It's all just push fit but tight so not easy to separate although I do try to minimise any unnecessary chemicals in or near the tank. Thanks a lot for the comment good luck with your mantis shrimp!

Hi what size is your tank for the shrip ? 2nd what camera u use ?

The tank is an AquaOne ReefSys 180 which is a 2 foot cube (roughly) and holds 180 Litres. This video was filmed on my phone (Honor View 20) although I have recently purchased a Panasonic Lumix GH5 which is what my latest video was filmed on. Thanks for commenting!

I really want to get a mantis shrimp, but I’ve never owned salt water fish so have never had to create or upkeep their tank. Is it a smart choice for me push forward and get my own Bruce, or would recommend me getting more educated about fish care first?

They are amazing creatures but I would not recommend them to people who have never kept a saltwater aquarium before. If you are determined I would advise reading as much as you can on saltwater fish keeping and potentially setup a tank for a mantis but just keep a few small (and cheap) fish for 6 months to a year to get used to the hobby before getting a mantis.

Sorry to hear your mantis is missing they're smashes. Yes they should get them back when they moult although it could take 2-3 before they're back to normal.

is it unsafe to get mantis shrimps from overseas, I've been trying to find any stores in Australia but haven't had any luck, plus I am also trying to convince my parents that they are harmless creatures that wont hurt unless provoked,

I'm not sure about importing as I've never done it I'm afraid. Mantis shrimp certainly aren't dangerous to people on the whole and are definitely not an issue unless your hands are in the tank (and even then not generally).
