Love that end meeting scene, Tommy rarely taking his eye off the priest the whole time, the subtle and not so subtle digs at each other, the priest saying “shall we say Grace” being a double meaning of prayer and also Graces name, making Tommy stare for an extended time. The show is full of so many little details like that and Killian Murphy does an amazing job at using his face and body language to express so much

@@ariannaw6858 There's a little more to it than that though. Tommy, for all of his Sigma male energy, uses people and takes what he can from them. His relationship with Arthur is fascinating in that while Arthur is the older brother it is Tommy who is the more intelligent, better long-term strategist, and more capable boss. But Tommy needs Arthur to be his strong violent right hand, and to facilitate that, Tommy tries to keep Arthur in a mental state that is violent and self destructive. You may recall Tommy in season 1 pouring away medicine that Polly gave Arthur because Tommy had " no use for Arthur being slow. " He needed a fast (ie violent and destructive) Arthur. In Tommy's eyes that is all that Arthur is useful for. So when Arthur announces Linda's pregnancy there is almost a look of disappointment on Tommy's face, as though Arthur had failed him. When Tommy said goodbye it was a Freudian slip meaning "goodbye Arthur you are of no use to me anymore. " He then covered it by acting as though he were saying goodbye because he had to go to a meeting, and that he was proud of him etc. Hope that makes sense?

The reason posturing IRL doesn't have the same impact is because you know that people aren't half what they think they are. It's more real here because of phenomenal acting talent and you're well aware that when Arthur talks about killing people he's got plenty to talk about.

The decision seemed tough despite Tommy being decisive. He had feelings, if not love, for them both, but when he had to choose, he chose Grace who's perfect for the man he aspires to be, rather than May who's ideal for who he actually is. It's not uncommon. It's optimistic, even. However, I would imagine each of them would end up resenting the other because reality and expectations aren't aligned. Also, I think the pregnancy weighed more heavily on the decision than we'd think. For all we know, May could have bailed upon hearing of it and made the decision easy.

Lol people defending the Tommy/grace relationship don’t understand the Tommy character. Grace was just a trophy. All Tommy ever cares about is ambition and wins. Everything else he feigns to uphold is just a means to these ends. He throws his fam under the bus repeatedly, he takes knowing unnecessary risks, he wins and never rests. Grace wasn’t love. She was just a mirror he liked gazing in.
