I'm 70, I had these as a kid. I got the recipe from my friend's Ma, must have been the late 50's early 60's. I've always credited that recipe for the start of my baking profession even though they aren't baked, lol. I still make that recipe. My husband hates them, which is good, it's just more for me. Same recipe except for 1/4 cup of cocoa instead of 2 TB and we call them Quick Cookies. Glad to see the recipe out there again. Nice to have for another generation.

Thanks, Lynn - I know this recipe has been around for a long time. I first had them in the late 60's at school. I'll bet yours are nice and chocolaty with the extra cocoa. Thanks!!

We call them Lumps, because that's what they look like. We always add chopped pecans, too. Nowadays, I make them with Nutella. What a wonderful, forgiving recipe for kids to learn kitchen skills.

Thanks, Arkay! Great name "Lumps!" Putting chopped pecans in these is a great idea - will try that -- so is using Nutella! Thanks!

These cookies also helped use up surplus peanut butter and oatmeal from the stockroom, a "Cafeteria Lady" once confided in me. She shared many basic recipes with me which 50+ years later are still part of our meal rotation. Rest in peace, Mrs. Spencer.

I make this every year at Christmas. My recipe also includes flaked coconut and I make a larger batch, pouring it into two baking pans. After it cools, I cut them into small squares and put them in snack bags to give away. Yes, they were a school cafeteria staple back in the good old days. In junior high Mrs. Pickle (love that name) was our cafeteria manager and she and the ladies could whip up all kinds of great things, like Moravian Sugar Cake.

@jonathan_nc
@jonathan_nc 2 жыл бұрын
@@kaitlynx1388 I looked up my recipe and it's a little different than Kevin's. It has 4 cups sugar, 1 cup cocoa, 1 cup coconut, 1 cup milk, 1 stick butter all combined in the pot on med-high heat and you boil for two minutes after it starts to boil. Then remove from heat and add 1 cup peanut butter, 2 tsp. vanilla and mix in. Then stir in 4 cups Quick Oats. This makes two medium baking pans full. I also don't refrigerate it and it keeps well in a plastic storage bag.

These are the best. I still remember when my middle sister brought the recipe home for COP cookies (chocolate oatmeal peanut butter) from her high school home ec class. We never had ingredients for chocolate chip cookies on hand but we always had what was needed for these so I remember a lot of them. As others have said they’re great bar cookies and I’d love to try them with coconut. Nothing better with a tall glass of cold milk!

These are so good! I'm lazy so I just pour the whole recipe into an 8x8 OR 9x9 glass baking dish that I lightly spray with Pam. The I cut them in squares when they have firmed up but not yet hardened. I've also made them with just the peanut butter and no cocoa. It depends on the mood of the day.

As a child of the ‘70s, I knew these as “Idiot Cookies.” (The name of the recipe presumably came from the now-un-PC idea that “even an idiot could make them” because the steps were so easy.) I have since heard them called No-Bake Cookies. No matter the name, they were always BIG hits in our house when growing up. Maybe I’ll make a batch this weekend…? Thank you, Kevin (and Mare!) for sharing this recipe with us! ❤

Wow, I haven't had one of these cookies in decades. I remember them from childhood. (I'm pushing 60 now.) I'm putting them on my list of upcoming recipes to try. I might experiment with the recipe by adding a 1/2 cup of chocolate chips to increase the chocolate taste and adding a cup of raisins or some other dried fruit to the cookies. For some reason, that sounds good. 😀
