Yeah he was "the hot guy of grunge" the prior years but he didn't like that direction, thats why the band changed a lot for 93 and onwards. Eddie was furious with the media and "hypocrites" in general, and decided to express it by being more reserved during shows.

I remember watching this back in '93. I didn't know what had hit me, man. Eddie up there looking completely unhinged,, just all that power and aggression unleashed in the music. And then they followed it up with that blistering version of "Rockin' in the Free World" with Neil Young. They don't put performances like this on TV any more.

Probably the ticketmaster fallout, they had faced censorship from the Jeremy video, and exhaustation from touring. My guess is they weren’t too pleased with playing in MTV and most likely were pushed by the label

But 'happy go lucky' is not an accurate description of what he was. He was always a shy, brooding and introspective individual. Look at the bands/albums he cites as influential in his young life. Listen to what he says went on his early life. etc.
