Just mucking around with the Peavey & EVH 5150 heads! I'm not sure if you could call this a shootout? Just recording the two with the same mic placement. There are some differences, I'm sure with tweaking you can make one sound like the other. Which do you prefer?

Φιλιππος exactly, the mesa cab loaded with vintage 30s do wonders to the EVH heads, its crazy! the mesa cabinet adds tons of bottom end and that lovely brown/bright saturation that we love to hear from modern metal tones, i cant say that about the evh cab, i mean im not saying it sucks but it gives it a more "darkish" " vintage" tone to it...not my cup of tea though.

The 5150 III has a more Plexi sound with a lot more 4khz. The OG has a really nice scooped mid sound and I would say sounds loose and forgiving. So the 5150 III has more articulation but that can also be a downside depending on your genre and pickups

Hello! I actually own the evh 5150 lll and honestly when i was at the shop looking for a new metal styled high gain amp I thought at first the peavy sounded amazing too. Buuut when i played around with the knobs on the evh. It was way more versatile. The presence knob does alot and with the extra resonance on the back i can have those bassy heavy tones too. So i went with the evh and I realized that its basically a blank canvas amp head. You can run any pedal through here and it will sound amazing. And yes even the boss metalzone sounded pretty good on there too. But i can play any style music with this amp head. You will see what i mean when you play with the knobs alot more. But idk u might have already tried it and just didnt like how it compared. You are entitled to your opinion and Either way good comment!
@jamesjin8839
@jamesjin8839 6 жыл бұрын
Yes. Resonance knob might be able to artificially enhance bass on some model of 5153s, but it works completely different between a 120 watter vs 100/50 watter in low ends at the end of the day so the low end punch of 5150 will always sounds "more" than evh version. I own the 100 watt version 5153 and ever since the first day I own it my cringe of mk1 version 5150 can not be tamed. However for the rise of the new 7/8 stringers and down tuners, EVH version may work better due to the refined low mids. The mk1 version may need help from pickups or eq. But I'd prefer to have it and be able to shape/tailor it than not having it and cringe afterwards.
@stevederp9801

That’s because the EVH uses el84s which are great. But are tubes focused mostly on mid range. While the peavey has 6l6 tubes which are much better for the low frequency bass. My attitude has always been a 6l6 amp can be dialed in to sound like an el84. But an el84 can never be dialed in to sound like 6l6. So I would rather have the 6l6 tubes.

I keep debating whether to sell my original peavey 5150 combo to get the evh 3 combo. Gonna cost at least a few hundred more and not sure if it's worth it. Is the evh that much better? I've heard a few folks say they wished they'd kept their original peavey 5150, for whatever reason. Alsi, any advantage to having the head over the combo? I've got a carvin legacy 4x12 that would probably do nicely with the head. Really just thinking out loud lol. Any thoughts?
@timitve
@timitve 5 жыл бұрын
One being better than the other is completely up to personal preference. I love having the 5150 more for a collection perspective, and always use the EVH live, it sounds great and doesn't take up a lot of space. Plus I don't want to take my old 5150 out and break it, haha. Having a head is handy if you're playing live or recording in studios a lot. You'll be able to cater to different venues with different sized cabinets as well as experiment with different speaker configurations. If you like the convenience of having the combo, and like the sound of it then you can do no wrong. Stick with the 5150 if you're playing at home, but if you're out playing maybe consider getting the III to avoid things getting to old and fragile?
@tommyturner6923

@@timitve I appreciate the info. I don't play out so the combo probably makes more sense, although i do have the carvin legacy half stack and an egnater vengeance half stack. The fender 3 definitely has a few more bells and whistles but as far as tone having played the both of them once again the peavey seems a little darker, which i like. However, buying it used someone has replaced the stock speakers, sheffields i assume, to a couple of budda phat 12's. Not sure how similar they are but they sound decent. Probably keep the peavey. Used prices get better all the time so maybe i'll pick up a bargain on the 3 one day, head or combo.

It's funny you posted this today because just last night I started thinking I should buy one of these two amps. I specifically got on KZbin this morning to watch some comparison videos, and what do you know, this is sitting in my feed. I think the EVH sounded tighter. As of right now what would you choose if you only had one? Right now I have a 6505+ combo running with an Orange PPC 2x12. Whichever one I get will sit on the Orange until I eventually add a Mesa 2x12 to my rig also.

Haha wow, what a coincidence! If I could only have one and it was only for home/recording use, I'd have the Peavey. But for the sake of live use, the EVH would be my choice. timmkv I would be getting it for home use. So why would you have choose the Peavey for home? Does it sound better overall? Or are there other reasons also? And I really wish I would have bought the Mesa over the Orange in the first place. The Orange is a nice cab but I think the Mesa is better for the Tone I'm going for. The only reason I got the Orange is because it's an extension for my Peavey 6505+ combo. The combo has a 16 ohm speaker so I wanted to match the ohms. The Orange was even more expensive than the Mesa.

For me. it's a double edged sword. I'd have the Peavey cause it's an older amp and sounds huge, I wouldn't want to take it out anywhere because I don't want to damage it haha. You probably will not do this anymore but I would suggest setting the EVH with more mids as it clearly has less then the Peavey. Also the volume drop is significant (probably due to lower mids too).

Hello guy!!! Very nice metal riffing!!! Which pickups with the ESP please? I own an evh 5150iii 6l6 50w and i like to play on the blue channel but i find that it would need more balls. Nice video. They both sound great but if I had to choose I would go with the Fender EVH simply because of the power transformer. That would make more oldschool VH tones come to life with less preamp. Also, nobody should forget the amp Eddie used to help design the 5150 at Peavey. The Peavey VTM.. WOW, what a cool amp even today. My favorite Peavey amp. Ballsy, distorted, sounds great loud. I think it nailed the VH sound better than the Peavey 5150. Those dip switches were cool. But just my opinion. Great job.

I've got to say, EVH is more pleasing to my ears. It's subjective, but I like it's brightness and just how it cuts. For my ears, the EVH sounded like a blanket had been lifted off after hearing the Peavey. I may be a bit biased, though. I own an EVH 5150 like the one being demoed. The matching EVH 412 cab is on the dark side, so maybe the EVH's brightness is designed to pair with a darker cab.

You put it through a Marshall 4X12 though and it will bring a house down. I love how fiercely bright it is without being thin. Despite it being tight and cutting, though, it's still bassy as hell, so I like it through a bright cab.

I had both and my fav is the Marshall YJM100. It has a built in power att so you can get that sizzle and sag but not have stuff falling off walls. Sold my EVH and got the lunchbox edition. @stevederp9801 6 жыл бұрын
They just came out with the 6l6 EVH. But to be honest it’s not going to sound the same as the peavey. The EVH is just being adapted with those tubes. The peavey was entirely designed around the 6l6 tubes. El34 and el84 sound great. But they’re more for mid range like a Marshall. If you plan on playing hard rock or thrash metal than those el34 or el84s are amazing. But if you want to play anything lower than e standard tuning than your gonna struggle to have any definition with those tubes. While the 6l6 tubes capture everything and primarily kick out a lot of low end bass. But they can be dialed in and in my opinion are more diverse.
