Phil wrote this song after traveling through Washington DC on his bus. going to the concert venue. He said he never saw so much human suffering. He was so affected by it, he passed around a donation basket at his concerts and doubled whatever was collected at every concert he performed after that.

D.C s horrible, I can remember in 90's the veterans sleeping on the vents to keep warm, and people setting in doorways begging. It's like this everywhere, I myself have lived 7 years with no running water, because my town wants 150 grand to run it to my house, and I'm not important enough in my state for them to do it. Our govt has forgotten us.

I’m a 73 year old white woman, a widow. The more I watch your reaction videos the more I learn about you but more importantly I learn more about the world through your eyes. I’ve never really been exposed to rappers and hip hop, that all came along after my music days were the most important things to me. I watched some of your Black Pegasus rapper music after I had watched some of your reaction videos. I’m glad I was exposed to you in that order. I would never have guessed that rapper was a devoted family man and a Christian. Talk about not judging a book by its cover. Or judging the rapper by his teeth (I say that because you had some narly gold teeth in one of your videos. LOL. ) You taught me a good lesson, a fresher course, to look deeper than the outward appearance. I don’t know you, but, I think I have gotten to know your heart especially while watching your reaction to this Phil Collins song from 1989. You are awesome and it seems you have your priorities straight. Condolences for losing your Mom. She’d be proud of who and what her son turned out to be. Phil became the drummer for Genesis in 1970, at age 19. He took over the role of lead singer in 1975 following the departure of Peter Gabriel. Phil began a successful solo career in the 1980s. "Another Day in Paradise", the whole song focuses on Phil encouraging us to be more sympathetic to the plights of the homeless and less fortunate in our societies. So, whenever we see someone struggling with homelessness, we should remember how blessed we are because we are in "paradise" as compared to the helpless poor.

I live in CO also I used to be homeless and part of being part of The Denver Rescue Mission I would help out in the soup kitchens and Salvation Army. Everyone has a story not everyone is on drugs or alcohol! I never thought I would be in that situation but I was I left an abusive situation to make a better life for my kids and myself! I love this song because he is addressing the world not just one country! God Bless You all and remember the song Their are angles among us!

I live in CO, the homeless situation is so unfortunate. I help when and however I can. Some people tell me "don't help them they'll just use it for drugs" but I say It's not my place to judge, if I can't give without judgement then I shouldn't be giving. God Bless God's people...the poor, the addicted, the imprisoned, the suffering...for the world shall be theirs!

People hate on homeless people who don’t want food given to them (from random strangers). They don’t realize a lot of people purposefully tamper with it putting glass in it or dog feces because they think it’s funny. I got ejected from a rollover crash on the highway and was in a coma for a week and spent months recovering. I was prescribed opioids and was on it for a few years til the DEA cracked down and all the patients were given a months worth of meds and basically cut off cold turkey since no one wanted to take patients on long term opioids. You basically became radioactive. So it obviously doesn’t end well. I eventually turned to heroin like everyone else. I did get clean and have 4 years clean after finding what worked for me (suboxone). But yeah I see people begging on the el and subway and I will just ask if they are dopesick. If they are I give them enough to “get well” because I have been there and know that feeling.

The honest open question about that is, are you actually doing any good at all at that point? It seems clear actually helping would be to find out the individual circumstances and spend the time and effort to actually provide the needed help to the individual, but does giving drug money to a drug user on the streets do any good and also what damage is that money actually potentially doing (supporting the entire drug dealing network, violence, etc) beyond keeping a drug user high and worthless. What if the drugs you helped them buy actually killed them? Is that helping? If you saw someone in an entirely different circumstance doing something self destructive would you also mindlessly offer them help destroying themselves? I'm really not trying to fight against someone else's alternative views here, but just trying to make sure people actually think about the potential negative consequences not just that any attempt at charity must be good because giving can never be bad or immoral. It seems the default position these days that the most minimal "altruistic" gesture is seen as so incredibly noble and what one must to do be the least bit noble and I think that deserves heavy critique and I don't think it's negative/deadly consequences deserve to be so easily and quickly pushed aside in the name of "helping". Helping ought to only count as help if it actually improves the situation for the better and not just for 2 seconds before the person dies. I think an honest conversation all the way around this is necessary and I'm willing to have it.

I do however have an hour of my time for a cuppa and a chat and an odd £10 to give freely to anyone in need of them. And again it is given without judgement of how that money is spent.

@@michaelrudolph7003an old man asked me for money on the street a while back, I asked what he was going to spend it on, he said “alcohol, it’s all I have left, there’s a better chance than not I’ll die out here, alcohol” I gave him the money. There’s programs but they don’t actually take time to help, and without an address or S.S. Card try getting a job. Once you’ve hit that bottom getting out is almost impossible.

I feel the same way. I don't want to feed the addiction with money, but I will buy anyone a meal. I was in one of my favorite restaurants for lunch at work one day and a homeless man came in asking for something to eat from the patrons. Everyone ignored him. I went to him, brought him to the counter and told him to order anything he wanted. He ordered a full steak meal (this was a Lebanese place) and a drink. It cost me $20, only 1/2 hour of work for me, but everything to him. He cried when he thanked me, and I was blessed for the rest of the day for his gratitude.

In 1992 I traveled from Australia to San Francisco for two weeks , I could not believe the homeless people on the streets. I know it’s bad here too now but it’s good to bring this to light and live with a generous heart because you never know where you might be tomorrow. Yes it starts with ourselves.

This video came out in the late 1980's when the homeless population exploded in the United States. Something to know about Phil Collins is that not only did he use this song to raise money for homeless programs, but he also played both Live Aid concerts which were created to raise funds for Ethiopian famine relief.

There are plenty of homeless here in Uppsala Sweden. Early mornings when I go to work I see them sleeping whenever they can around the station in town. Even outside in snow and -20C this winter. Of course there are mental problems and drugs playing a huge part in it here not just poverty here.

He also explained in a Musician interview: "I remember when we played Washington... Washington was almost at a standstill and these people were trying to sleep on the grills where all the hot air was coming up, and you could see that it was in the shadow of Capitol Hill. I thought it was an extraordinary contradiction. Collins met the problem of homelessness face-to-face in London while cutting this single. He remembers leaving the studio and seeing a homeless woman with two children who were begging for money. While the song shines a light on the issue, it also made him realize that, when confronted with it, he reacted the same as everyone else. "What (the song) deals with is people's awkwardness with it. When it happened to me, I just walked straight past. I thought, I'm doing the same thing as everybody else... I felt awkward. I didn't ignore her but at the same time I didn't stop and give her some money... That's what the song deals with, people just sort of starting to pretend it's not happening. Collins was criticized by the English press for singing about the poor despite being wealthy ("This is one I got a lot of flak for because I'm a multimillionaire"). The 80s were a period of severe recession and economic troubles. I remember my father being laid off during that time and the boxes of government cheese. It was a tough time across the board. This song reminds me of Bruce Hornsby's "The way it is" and also Tom MacDonald's "Castles" about looking around yourself and really SEEING the stories/struggles of the world around you. Maybe you can help...maybe you can't...but you have to see it before you can make that determination.

Phil Collins is my generation who fought for civil rights homelessness and women’s rights. I don’t know if any generation will ever be that involved again. I lived through farmers getting their farms taking away from them because they were encouraged to borrow and then couldn’t pay their bills. You should watch the movie Country with Sam Shepard and Jessica Lange. But Homelessness has been a problem for many years. And my generation did a lot, a lot. Bob Geldorf and musicians did a couple of concerts for Africa. The situation was horrible there. They raised an enormous amount. Willie Nelson and a lot of country artists did concerts for the farmers who were loosing their farms. It was awful. Research it.

That movie, "Country" is a masterpiece. Wow, I need to watch it again. Jessica Lange, along with Sissy Spacek and Meryl Streep, are the holy-trinity of acting for me. Last night, I was surprised and happy to see Jessica Lange on the Academy Awards, presenting Best Actress. Unfortunately, botox ruined her face. So sad. If I were a director I would love to cast her in a movie but I wouldn't now. Like Meg Ryan, Jessica Lange's face is transformed beyond redemption. Sissy and Meryl still seem to look great, however.

My husband was friends with Phil Collins back in the day when he lived in shalford surrey uk, he uses to drink in the pub the queen Vic. His is wife asked my husband to go with her to pick up a new car which Phil brought for her birthday. This was at the height of his fame in-between concerts and usually played pool on a Sunday night.

I was born on the base near Colorado. I don't remember so many homeless in Denver or Colorado Springs. I always help when I can. 1989 the song was released... It's always brought tears to my eyes but its more than that for me today. I'm just going to hit the highlights on my story but I'm betting you'll get the picture... I got a call from a friend a few years ago asking me to pick up her mom from the airport so off I go. You know the drill, seatbelt, engine on, radio set, and your off. I see I need gas and just as I'm pulling up to the intersection, I hear the part of this song where he says, "she's got blisters on the soles of her feet..." starts playing in my head, mind you, there is a different song on the radio. I pull through the intersection, turn into the 7-11 for gas and have to go inside. There sitting on the concrete up against the building was a woman who was obviously homeless, I still got that song playing in my head, but I'm in a hurry, you know what I mean? She walks up to the car while I'm pumping gas and asks for a ride and as much as I wanted to not pick up a homeless woman, that song got louder in my head, so I agreed. She gets in the car and right away I see that she has no shoes on only socks and as I look, I see that she has walked in those socks for so long that the heels and toes are worn through and the calluses on her heels are cracked. Now, I like to say I don't have any money, but this is where the Lord reminded me, I dug through a full drawer of socks, 2 pair of boots, 5 pair of dress shoes and 3 pairs of sneakers for what I put on my feet before I left the house. That song is playing in my head and I'm suddenly realizing this is no chance meeting... As we drove down the hwy, she begins arguing with ... someone in her head... and I began praying... 30 miles I prayed for her release from the demons that were talking to her... I don't know what they wanted her to do, but I kept praying and she kept refusing... Her name is Rose... she got out of my car that day with my shoes, socks, Bible, cash, hugging me and praising God. I left a piece of my heart with a stranger that day, and I pray for her daily... If you hear the Holy Spirit follow him in faith and he will work the Father's will through you...

I haven't heard this song for about 30 years. Still as great today as it was then and still as powerful. Phil Collins was the soundtrack of my childhood and teenage years. The three main albums I grew up on were Face Value, No Jacket Required and ...But Seriously.

Phil is an awesome singer and storyteller...I just let my 10yr old grandson listen to him the other day, HOOKED! You know at what age to grab'em, next CCR! But hitting on the message-There is so much that can be done but (wait now) they have to want to be helped...My 40yr old nephew has been homeless (we live in TN) for two years now...We have seen him twice in that time...I have done everything but get on my knees and grab him and beg...We have told him get the proper help but he says no, I can't or won't do it, this allows me the freedom to use various drugs...

Your observations regarding world plight in general are spot on, don’t apologize. As for this song, it takes me back to my 13 year old self listening to the countdown on the radio. This song, along with Lou Gramm “Just Between You and Me” and Rod Stewart “Downtown Train”. All grouped together in my mind for that time.

Phil has been heavily sampled over the years by hip hop/R&B artists. Unlike some people nowadays that try to sue anyone that does a song that even sounds remotely similar, Phil said he felt honoured that people wanted to sample his tracks.

Music from my generation of the 70’s and 80’s had amazing lyrics and deep meaning to their songs. It touches your heart and you could relate to the lyrics. My aunt used to be homeless. (Mh condition) It was terrible. She lives with my mom now. It is hard to see people suffering. I should do more to help. This song is a good reminder to us all.
