This is a damned classic, Boney M was huge on the dance floors/charts in the mid/late 70's here in Europe.

Boney M was a disco group formed by German producer Frank Farian who wrote the songs and hired the members of the group from Caribbean singers & performers in the mid 70's... 3 women made the cut and became the main singers of Boney M, but only 2 of 3 were prominently featured in the studio tracks - Liz Mitchell and Marcia Barrett... the 3rd Maizie Williams was backup. A male dancer was hired as member #4 of Boney M to entertain the ladies in the audience - Bobby Farrell (who was from Aruba), but Farrell was not a good singer... so, Frank Farian recorded his own vocals to a distortion and Bobby Farrell would lip sync to them when Boney M appeared in concert. However, Farrell was a talented dancer; an MJ before MJ. Boney M debuted in 1976 and made a pop version of Bob Marley's song "No woman no cry"... but it was the single 'Daddy cool' that became a hit... their 2nd album in 1977 'Love for sale' gave them hit singles in Europe - 'Ma Baker' ... 'Belfast'... By 1978, Boney M was becoming a disco sensation in Europe and across the world but had little success in N. America. 3rd album 'Nightflight to Venus' was their biggest record in 1978 w/ 'Rasputin' as a hit single... as well as ''Rivers of Babylon'... 'Brown girl in the ring' ... 'Painter man'... Boney M was one of the first Western acts to perform in Soviet Russia that year. 4th album 'Oceans of fantasy' in 1979 gave Boney M the hit "Hooray! Hooray! It's a holi-holiday"... as well as 'Gotta go home' ... 'Bahama mama'. Unfortunately, the disco era began to cool off after 1980 and the next album 'Boonoonoonoos' in 1981 was not as popular and Bobby Farrell was out of the group and the record was not promoted... Frank Farian delivered a more 80's pop album for Boney M in 1984 - 'Ten thousand light years'... and hired Reggie Tsiboe to take Bobby Farrell's spot as the male dancer, but the record sold poorly again. Boney M split up after 1 final album 'Eye dance' in 1985. Frank Farian found huge success w/ another pop project Milli Vanilli in the 80's, but that fell apart after the duo that was marketed as the singers were revealed NOT to be the ones on the record. Bobby Farrell passed away in 2010 from apparent heart failure... he and the other members of Boney M would often tour w/ their own ensemble to perform Boney M songs in concert.

Love this song. I've had it in my primary playlist for years now. Also yes, Rasputin was a real guy who lived in Russia. He gained power by convincing the Russian queen that he could treat her young son's hemophilia (disease that makes you bleed without stopping when cut). The fact that he was a very eccentric man unusually close to the royal family with a strong sexual appetite who claimed mystical powers + the fact that the assassins attempting to kill him were very bad at it and took several attempts meant that he left a very strong impact in folk legends. Mostly because all these things combined were very wild. Like, a sexually voracious magical holy man attached to the royal family of Russia stuns assassins by knocking back cyanide-laced cake and poisoned wine with no ill effect, is shot three times, leaps up to attack the assassins, and has to be bound and thrown into an icy river to assure his death...wild. It's no wonder ppl kept the story alive. Like, that's just crazy.

Boney M. was an emblematic German band from the late 70s and early 80s. Unfortunately Bobby Farrell (the dancer) died in 2010, he did not sing, he only played back and gave away his original "choreographies" (the male voices were from the group's creator Fran Farian), the three girls (Liz Mitchell, Marcia Barret and Maizie Williams) did perform the songs

Boney M was a project started by the german singer and producer Frank Farian. He produced some songs and he needed some singer to build a group. Bobby Farrell, Maizie Williams, Marcia Barrett und Liz Mitchell are carribean origin. Boney M had some big disco-hits. for example "Sunny", "Ma Baker" and "Rivers Of Babylon". Most of the songs are based on carribean melodies or written by german composers, or in the case of "Sunny" by Bobby Hebb. The audience loved the weird dances from Bobby Farrel, but he wasn`t the singer. The females sings but the mens voice was a playback from Frank Farian. Rasputin was a spiritual healer on the tsar`s court with a big influence to the tsar`s family.

@@drmsanford You are absolutely right! There were one or two small differences, however. In Boney M, he sang the male part himself in the studio and the public knew in advance that he was the singer and that Bobby Farrel only moved his lips to the playback during performances, while the women also sang live. At Milli Vanilli he was also the man in the background who held the reins firmly. However, he did not sing himself, but studio musicians were paid to sing in, while the public was led to believe that Fab Morvan and Rob Pilatus were the singers until the playback failed.

Producer and Songwriter and "inventer" of Boney M was GERMAN Frank Farian (some years later he "invented" Milli Vanilli). In both projects the "singers" were not the real singers. Here at Boney M you here the male voice of Frank Farisn himself. The band members of Boney M were from Jamaica. The band with this unique sound was not only popular in former West-Germany, but also in the rest of Europe (and they made it even for a gig in thosedays socialistic Poland (where this festival was). But they never made it into the Sojet Union in these years, also they sing about the historical figure of Rasputin here.

Boney M was a project started and lead by Frank Farian, a white guy from Germany who did all the singing. No, Farian did not all the singing. Don't mix up Boney M and Milli Vanilli. Farian sang just Bobby Farrell's part as Bobby was a dancer not a singer. But the three other members of Boney M - the women - were singing. Especially Liz Mitchell was (is) a great singer. In other Boney M songs the vocal part of the women was larger than here. In most of the songs Liz Mitchell was the lead singer.

Gregori Rasputin was believed to be a 'holy man' in Russia, apparently able to perform miracles... he became an influential figure in the last Russian Tsar's life in the early 1900's because his wife Alexandria (the Tsarina) often turned to him to heal her ailing son... Rasputin was a tall and imposing figure and as his power grew within the royal circle and his reputation for abusing and raping young girls and women, the rumors (which were unfounded) was that he was Alexandria's lover... and his deplorable behavior was excused by the Russian royal family. Rasputin became a target of assassination and he was lured into an evening where he was poisoned, but it didn't work apparently... When Rasputin was shot as a recourse, he was still alive from gunshots and he attempted to escape in fury. He finally shot dead outside and his body was dumped in the nearby river and was found w/ multiple gunshot wounds... There were a lot of unfounded insinuation about Rasputin's death but what followed was the collapse of the Tsar's power during the Russian communist revolution - he abdicated the throne and he and his family (wife and children) were soon executed by the communists.

I grew up on Boney M in the 70's. I loved their hits. We had a teacher who carried a pint of milk in everyday in the old glass bottle and we would sing pinta man to him to the tune of Boney M's Painter Man. I loved Mary's Boy Child and By the rivers of Babylon. Brown girl in the ring was popular too. Rasputin was trying to cure the Russian Prince who was a Haemophiliac before it was understood. He was murdered after the boy died. Factor 8 hadn't been discovered then.

Hahaaahaa! Love your face reacting to this. Boney M was a staple in our house. We aren’t allowed to decorate our Christmas tree without their Christmas Album on.

BP - Hovering over Blondie - Heart of Glass was pure Kismet! Blondie and Debbie Harry (an incomparable Ingenue) played Punk/New Wave Clubs such as Max's Kansas City & CBGB's. Along with The Ramon's, the Velvet Underground, Talking Heads, Television and countless other underground Artists of the time. Before Blondie, Debbie Harry was a member of the Stilletos AND a former Playboy Bunny! Debbie Harry was clearly destined for Fame; her voice, raw talent, beauty and style combine to create a Gorgeous Goddess. (too much?) 😂 Give it a whirl! 🎉❤

Sadly Bobby Farrell passed away in 2010 in St Petersburg, Russia. He died on the same date and same city as Rasputin. His daughter is a rapper.

Grigori Rasputin a was some sort of Russian mystic / holy man. He was working for Nicholas II, the last Tsar of Russia, Born a son of a peasant made his way to the head of the state and got tremendous amount of power, pretendly cured the son of the Tsar with his 'magic', the man could green light or prevent any project/business depending if you were on his bad side or good side. They tried really hard to kill him, poisoned cake and wine, didn't worked, they end up shooting him several time. He "predicted" several things during his life, his death for exemple, he said that his body would never rest in peace after his death, which end up being true since his grave was vandalize under the USSR, or that upon his death, the Emperor and his family would be butchered and Russia would fall in the hands of the devil, which happened since the entire Romanov family was killed by revolutionary, civil war and the USSR was born from the ashes for the Russian Kingdom. He is a really interesting person, and kind of scary in pictures ^^

Rasputin was a real person, a ‘religious’ figure, very close to the russian monarchy, he was the only one that could treat the only son of the czar who suffered from hemophilia. The other higher ups became jealous of how much power he had and assassinated him. Which was not as easy as it sounds, lol. The poisoned him, stabbed, shot and finally drowned him. Wild stuff. Not sure if this was during or right before WW1 but the royal family was later taken prisoner and the monarchy was overthrown. Czar Nicholas, his wife, their 4 daughters and only son were all killed. Very sad and there were persistent rumours for years that the youngest girl, Anastasia, and the son, Alexie were not killed because their killers felt sorry for them as they were so young and their remains were not found with the remains of the others. There were even pretenders over the years, usually claiming to be Anastasia, these rumours were put to rest in recent years when the childrens remains were found and confirmed through dna testing to be Anastasia and Alexie.

Bonnie M was mega-popular, and even today people still listen to their songs, no matter if it's the originals or the covers. This performance, in particular, is from the city of Sopot, in my country - Bulgaria. 😊(do I need to clarify that I am a fan of the band? all my life?)

Boney M were the very first band I saw in concert - around the mid 1970s at the Brighton Centre, UK. We went for fondue afterwards and I felt very grown up and sophisticated. Many years later I sat next to Bobby Farrell on a flight to Madrid. He was a delight. Charming, friendly, hugely entertaining and surprisingly reserved considering his on stage persona. It's a moment in time I still think of with great pleasure.

This is a true international song if ever there was one, a German band with singers from the Caribbean, singing a disco song with middle eastern vibes about an infamous Russian man in Poland.

Boney M. is a German disco group that had its heyday in the 1970s and early 1980s. The group was formed in 1975/1976 by Frank Farian, who wrote most of the group's songs and produced all of the group's releases. The group members from 1976 were Marcia Barrett, Liz Mitchell, Maizie Williams and Bobby Farrell. Frank Farian is also the guy singing the male voice :D

Boney M. was a disco band produced by Frank Farian that had international success, especially in the 1970s, with songs such as Daddy Cool, Rivers of Babylon and Ma Baker. Boney M. has sold over 150 million records worldwide, including more than 60 million singles. If I'm not mistaken, the contract with the group was limited to a certain period of time. If I'm not mistaken, after the group dissolved, they tried to found a new one, but that was banned because of copyright. Similar to Milli, Vanilly, there was also a small scandal here. Since the song singer couldn't sing, it was recorded on full playback.
