This song went to number 3 in New Zealand, 11 in Australia, and in the top 100 billboards in the US and almost every other country that released it. It won the Grammy award for The best concept video in early 1989. “Weird Al” Yankovic came up with the idea for this song when Michael Jackson released “BAD” Weird Al thought it would make a great sequel to his previous song Eat it which was based on another Michael Jackson song Beat it. It was not a coincidence. That these are probably his two biggest songs that he’s ever made. I also heard you recently talking in another video about his song all about the Pentiums My other fave songs of his are parody of Nirvana’s song “smells like teen spirit” which he called “ smells Like Nirvana” it has some hilarious gibberish lyrics Amish Paradise which was a parody of gangster’s Paradise by Coolio for which Coolio sued him for not asking permission The funny part is “Weird Al” Yankovic never asked anyone for permission not even Michael Jackson getting a parody song of your music by “Weird Al” Yankovic in the 80s and early 90s was the equivalent of being a star on the Muppet show in the 70s or being featured as a guest character on The Simpsons in the 90s and ‘00s people were stoked when their songs were mocked by “Weird Al” it meant that you had made it in the music industry in a big way. I mean, he even did Madonna like a virgin. Called like a surgeon. I know so much about this guy‘s career. A lot of musicians would say that they felt like they finally made it when they found out that Weird Al wanted to do a parody of their song. Reportedly, Madonna was walking with a friend in New York City when she wondered out loud when Yankovic would parody her 1984 hit "Like a Virgin" with "Like a Surgeon". The friend was a mutual acquaintance of Jay Levey, Yankovic's manager, and brought the idea up to him following the encounter. So she, reportedly, imagined her own title of Weird Al's version of her song. If any parody of a song that's from the 80's still holds up and hasn't aged too badly, well, that is an accomplishment in and of itself, because most things from the 80's haven't aged well.

I don't know since you said you hadn't just watched the bad video how much he recognized that he's actually parodying different things and quirks in the video and of MJ not just the song itself. Like the sound effects, the yells, (adding a reason behind MJ's random yells like a mousetrap-Genius!) or the scene with the wind or spinning.. all nods to the original video. 3:58 - When Weird Al does a concert, there is always a large projection screen behind him. He uses it for special effects, images to supplement his lyrics, and occasionally even to show clips from his music videos and other projects. The screen serves double-duty as a distraction to the audience as Al goes offstage for costume changes. When Al performs 'Fat' (typically at the end of the show before the curtain call and inevitable encore), he plays this clip to set up the song. I tell you, there's nothing like standing in a theater and hearing the entire audience say "Yo, Ding Dong, man! Ding Dong! Ding Dong, yo!" 4:57 - To film this shot, they put Al in a latex chin mask with air bladders under it. Al said to the tech guys "Okay, I want you to keep pumping air into this mask until the makeup bursts." The final shot in the video ends the _FRAME_ before the makeup collapsed. 6:25 - You should have. To make up for it, watch this side-by-side video of Fat and Bad: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mIbOkp59p6etqck 9:27 -- In concert, it's usually a guy in a Santa Clause suit that brings the garden hoe out on stage.

@BlackPegasusRaps hilarious story but just around 30 years ago or so I seen weird owl and his band perform live in a very small personal setting without too many people and he was hilarious even though his career was coming to an end. He sang this song around halfway through the concert but first he went backstage to the costume change and came out in the fat suit. The funny thing is that during the chorus when he’s saying I’m fat, I’m fat etc. He would jump into the air and as he landed on the stage the entire band would jump into the air like it was caused from his landing. It was really well choreographed and made it so cool to watch. After the concert me and MY mate and his wife went downstairs to the bar to get a drink it was basically empty with only a few people around about half an hour later I turned to my friends and said oh my god look over there. It’s weird out and the band over at that table. Me not being a particularly shy person went over to their table and said hi and told them how much I enjoyed their concert and that I had been a fan and had bought his album ‘Even Worse “ when it first came out on audiocassette. And I told him that I knew every word to every song that he had released from day one. He was so nice that he invited me and my friends over to their table and for the next half an hour or so, he bought us all drinks. And then he politely said that they had to go. And about 10 years later, I seen him at six Flags in California when I was over there on holiday. And I said hi and he remembered me. It was so cool.

There was a time when how you knew you had made it as a band was when Weird Al parodied you. Imo my favorite is his 2011 release "Perform this Way" which was a parody of Lady Gaga's "Born this way" not just for the song but because of the story behind it. He had sought permission from her team to do it and they initially said yes but with a kind of hitch, saying they needed to hear the final version. So Weird Al changed up his schedule, went into the studio at his own expense and completed the recording. But apparently someone in Lady Gaga' camp, not her herself, didn't think it was a good idea and took back their permission. Now permission isn't legally required for a Parody verses a straight up cover, and Al was kind of put out that he went to all the trouble and the expense only to never have that work see daylight, so he released it on the internet for free. It blew up and went viral and apparently as Al stated in interviews Lady Gaga saw it herself and loved it. The song itself is outstanding because while it is absolutely a parody of Gaga's song and visually a gag regarding lots of the performance stunts she was known for, especially early in her career, it's so anthemic that in it's way it's an homage of affirmation as well. The singing is on point, the choreography is insane and the visual effects are crazy. Weird Al isn't just a musical comedian, he is an outstanding songwriter and an incredible vocal talent and anybody that says different needs to re-examine his catalogue, because there is literally no style or form he can't handle.

The video for "Fat" is a almost, if not a complete, shot for shot remake of the video for "Bad". I believe there is a a video on KZbin that lines them up side by side so you can watch them both together. I've heard two stories about the setting for the "Fat" video. One story is that it's the actual set Michael Jackson used to shoot the "Bad" video, the other story is that it's the set Michael had remade for the video "Badder", which I believe was part of the Moonwalker mini movie. Both versions of the story have Michael offering the set to Al when he requested permission to make the parody.

It's totally ASHAME that we, society as a whole, have forgotten how to laugh. At ourselves, WITH each other, and at comedy!!! We were not offended at every little, itty-bitty thing.

Smells like Nirvana is amazing. They filmed it in the same location as the original video.

Check out some of his originals. "One More Minute, Mr. Frump in the Iron Lung, I'll Be Mellow When I'm Dead" are just a few. "Word Crimes, The Saga Begins, Tacky" are some other parodies he's done. There's a story about "The Saga Begins". It's a parody of "American Pie" & Don McClean who sings "American Pie" says his kids play "The Saga Begins" so much that he's caught himself starting to sing it instead of " American Pie" during his concerts!!!!!

Even funnier side note, I believe there's a pizza delivery guy in this video who really was a pizza delivery guy! He showed up to deliver to the set so they asked him if he wanted to be in the video. Only Weird Al! :D

OMG I'm dying over here 😂🤣 It's been soooooo long since I've seen this and I have never laughed so hard at it. 😂🤣😂 I definitely appreciate it more through adult eyes.

So much fun!! 😂 I think it would be good to do double features when reacting to Weird Al showing the original production followed by his parody. That would enhance the experience for viewers that aren't familiar with the original or haven't seen it in a long time. There is so much attention to detail in his work that would be much easier to pick up.

I really like Weird Al's song "This Song's Just Six Words Long." The song it was based on, "I've Got My Mind Set on You" (version 1) by George Harrison was an incredibly repetitive song, so it was accurate. Catchy as heck, but not a lot to it lyrically. Al poked so much fun at it, I'm actually surprised George let it see the light of day. He must have thought it was hilarious, too.

One of the great things this song does is take all those childhood jokes that are likely inappropriate today, "Your momma's so fat that...." and turns them around to be owned by the singer, "I'm so fat that my shadow weights 42 pounds." They become empowering rather than shaming.

Hey, great reaction. You should watch the side by side videos of this and eat it. Its amazing how well they did with both of those. Dance moves, costumes, everything.

Imagine peak Al years and being 13 and listening to these I think my favorite was “the night santa went crazy” and “atm ish paradise” good stuff!

Watch the side by sides with the originals and Al’s’ versions! Al puts so much work and effort into his parodies. If you are a Star Wars episode, one fan check out his song the saga begins

What's great about it is... Michael loved it. It's a thing now... artists know they've really arrived when Weird Al parodies them. And he doesn't just karaoke their version. He arranges his own and does it from scratch. The man is a major talent... I've loved him since the 1970s when he first appeareed on DR. Demento.

Crazy Weird Al Yankovic. My kids played that artist so much, I had to leave the house. But I always came back in for more.
