Also his band Elf was very different but still an a great band. Elf's Carolina County Ball is definitely a must hear alongside The Butterfly Ball Super Charity Event featuring Elf, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep and a bunch of other performers of the time. The album is great but the concert movie is an experience.

Dio’s recording career started in 1958. After Ronnie and the Red Caps and Ronnie Dio and the Prophets came Elf. Then Ritchie Blackmore left Deep Purple and wanted to start a new band, so he got hold of Elf, kicked out their guitarist and made Rainbow. It was supposed to be collaborative but Blackmore pulled a fast one on the band and titled the first album “Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow”. To me, Blackmore looks like Mr Bean (Rowan Atkinson comedy character) lol Anyway, Ronnie Dio was not best pleased about the first album title but continued with the band for two more before leaving to join Black Sabbath teplacing the recently fired Ozzy Osbourne. After a couple of albums with Sabbath though, Dio quit and formed his own band called simply, Dio. There’s a little more after that but that’s enough history. Ps. I do love Sabbath, but mostly the Ozzy 70s stuff, I’ve never liked Dio/Rainbow even though my wife was in a Rainbow tribute band as bassist a couple years ago. And I don’t like Blackmore/Deep Purple either. I just know a lot about them because of other musicians I have played in bands with over the years.

tFor me the song's narrative is about the people devote everything to building the wizard's tower, only to be abandoned when their leader fails to deliver on his promises. It’s a cautionary tale about misplaced trust and the dangers of blind faith.

Ronald James Padavona (July 10, 1942 - May 16, 2010), known professionally as Ronnie James Dio, was an American heavy metal singer. He fronted numerous bands throughout his career, including Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Dio and Heaven & Hell. Though his parents were from Cortland, New York, Dio was born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, where his family resided for his father's service in the U.S. Army during World War II. The family returned to Cortland when Dio was very young, and he lived there until graduating from high school in 1960. Dio's music career began in 1957 as part of the Vegas Kings (later Ronnie and the Rumblers). In 1967, he formed the rock band Elf, in which he sang and played bass. In 1975, Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore founded the band Rainbow and hired Dio to be the lead singer; during his tenure, the band released three studio albums. Dio quickly emerged as one of heavy rock's pre-eminent vocalists. In 1979, Dio replaced Ozzy Osbourne as Black Sabbath's lead singer and appeared on three studio albums with the band, all three of which met with success: Heaven & Hell (1980), Mob Rules (1981) and Dehumanizer (1992). In 1982, he left to form the band Dio, which itself had two albums certified platinum by the RIAA. In 2006, he founded the band Heaven & Hell with ex-bandmate Tony Iommi. In November 2009, Dio was diagnosed with stomach cancer and died of the disease six months later. Dio is regarded as one of the greatest and most influential heavy metal vocalists of all time. He is known for popularizing the "devil horns" hand gesture in metal culture and his medieval-themed song lyrics. According to a version provided by the singer himself, the act derives directly from the classic Italian apotropaic gesture, which his grandmother often displayed. Dio had a powerful, versatile vocal range and was capable of singing both hard rock and lighter ballads. He was awarded the "Metal Guru Award" by Classic Rock Magazine in 2006. He was also named the "Best Metal Singer" at the Revolver Golden Gods Awards in 2010 and ranked as the genre's best vocalist in 2013 by music journalist Sacha Jenkins.

The song has been called a "morality tale", from - according to lyricist Ronnie James Dio - the standpoint of a "slave in Egyptian times". They relate the story of the Wizard, an astronomer who becomes "obsessed with the idea of flying" and enslaves a vast army to build a tower from which he can take off and fly.  Building the tower in harsh conditions ("In the heat and rain, with whips and chains; /just to see him fly, so many die"), the people hope for the day when their misery ends. In the end, the wizard climbs to the top of the tower but, instead of flying, falls and dies: "No sound as he falls instead of rising / Time standing still, then there's blood on the sand." A poll held by Gibson ranked the song the 17th greatest heavy metal song of all time.

I'd heard two of the commercial tunes from Rainbow, but when I heard this as a teenager in the late 90s my jaw dropped. I had this on a mixtape (my rechargeable batteries lasted longer on a walkman than a discman) and I kept flipping the tape and fast-forwarding that side so I could hear the song again. And again. And again. When i heard it, I was still attending church and it made me think of the Tower of Babel - much like how Queen's "The Prophet Song" dipped into pre-Abrahamic Genesis - so the combination of the music, lyrics and subconscious connotations floored me

One of the best live vocal performances EVER! And Ritchie Blackmore's guitar solo... the proverbial chef's kiss. The lyrics, taken literally, are about a wizard who enslaves countless numbers of people and makes them build a stone tower for him. Just like the Egyptian slaves bleed and died to build the pyramids. The people hope for the day when their misery will come to an end, as they build the tower in harsh conditions, just so they can see the wizard fly away, which gives them the hope and strength they need to go through this sheeez. But in an unexpected happy ending, the wizard falls off the tower and dies. Also, in my imagination, it blends biblical themes (the tower of stone so high to touch the sky, like the tower of Babel) with stars-obsessed Egyptian lore like the one depicted in the movie Stargate.

Dio was in a couple of Doo Whop bands in the 50's & in the 79's was in a band called Elf. He joined Rainbow when Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore decided he wanted to create a new band that had a fantasy element to the music and recruited Dio. Rainbow became more popular though when Joe Lynn Turner joined the band as Ritchie Blackmore would want to go a more commercial route with the music & Dio wanted to stay as they were. Dio joined Black Sabbath for a couple albums before leaving & creating his solo group. He would reunite with Black Sabbath a couple of times, once for a Reunion album The Dio Years & then creating a new group named Heaven & Hell. The guitarist as I mentioned is Ritchie Blackmore who was the guitarist of Deep Purple. The song I always found was about faith, working until you die for a promise you may never see, like the slaves of Egypt who believed in a deliverer who would free them. Many generations dying with the belief but never wavering. I'm not religious at all but I do enjoy the lyrics

You're not tripping. Rainbow had a few different lead vocalists, but Ronnie James Dio was their first. Rainbow was formed from some of the pieces of Deep Purple, most notably Ritchie Blackmore on guitar. Each of their albums featured an epic song. This was from the Rainbow Rising album which, if memory serves was their second album (The first, being "Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow"). If you listen to the lyrics, it's actually kind of funny in an ironic way. The song is about being blinded by ego into imagining you're capable of superhuman feats, only to learn in the end that you're only human. The "wizard" in the song coerces the people who were enslaved to build a tower to help him fly to the stars. The people built it with "flesh and bone" while being subjected to "whips and chains" and "so many died" in the process. When it's finally finished, the wizard climbs to the top and "falls instead of rising" only to go splat in the sand.

One of the great rock/metal singers in Ronnie James Dio, one of the great rock/metal drummers in Cozy Powell, one of the great rock/metal guitarists in Ritchie Blackmore. In my view this is one of the best ever rock/metal solos. There are better shredders and technical players since, but Blackmore had a great bluesy style, and here, he adds that Arabic/Eastern sound. A true hard rock/metal epic.

Rainbow was the band formed in 1975 by Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore after leaving the band... He wanted to start over and enlisted Ronnie James Dio (vocals) whose band Elf opened for Deep Purple on tour in the 70's... Members of Elf also recorded Rainbow's debut album "Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow" ... but Blackmore opted to hire new musicians for Rainbow to tour and record the 2nd album 'Rising' in 1976 w/ Ronnie Dio on vocals... Cozy Powell (drums), Jimmy Bain (bass) and Tony Carey (keyboards) 3rd Rainbow album "Long live Rock n roll" was released in 1978 and was the last to feature singer Ronnie James Dio... According to Dio, Blackmore wanted Rainbow to go in a more 'pop rock' direction in 1979 and he refused; so, Ronnie James Dio was fired and singer Graham Bonnet recorded Rainbow's 4th album 'Down to Earth' in 1979... he went through numerous musicians during Rainbow's career. Rainbow continued in 1981 w/ singer Joe Lynn Turner and scored a number of commercial hit singles ('Street of dreams' ... 'Stone cold'... "Can't let you go") before Ritchie Blackmore reunited w/ Deep Purple in 1984. Ronnie James Dio joined Black Sabbath in 1979 after Ozzy Osbourne was fired... In 1980, Black Sabbath (w/ Dio on vocals) released 'Heaven & Hell' and it became the band's first platinum selling album since 1974... the next album 'Mob rules' was released in 1981 and sold gold... However, Ronnie James Dio was fired in 1982 after being accused of tampering w/ the mixes of Sabbath's live record 'Live Evil' (Ronnie James Dio denied those claims and took Sabbath's drummer Vinny Appice w/ him) Ronnie did reunite w/ Black Sabbath years later in 1992 for the album 'Dehumanizer'... before leaving again in '93. He rejoined Sabbath in 2006 but the band renamed themselves Heaven and Hell... and released 1 album ('The Devil you know' in 2009) before Ronnie James Dio passed away in 2010 from cancer at age 67. After being fired from Black Sabbath in 1982... Ronnie James Dio felt he was an established singer from Rainbow and Black Sabbath (few knew Elf, his band in the 70's) and named his new band Dio and released their debut album 'Holy Diver' in 1983 which became a platinum success.

Yes. That is Ronnie James Dio. His recording career began in the mid 1950's when he was a young teenager. He tour Sweden inbetween his junior and senior year in high school when a Motown group. In 1972 Dio's band ELF was the opening act for Deep Purple> This guitar player Ritchie Blackmore was Deep Purple's guitar player. That's how Dio got this gig. Cozy Powell was one of the greatest drummers of all time. he passed away in 1994 in a car crash. The original bass player for this band was Bob Daisley who along with Randy Rhoads created Ozzy's solo career. the bass player in this video is Jimmy Bain. This song came from one of the greatest albums of my generation, Rising by Rainbow \mXm/

Yep. That's Dio in the early years. Ronnie was with Rainbow & Black Sabbath in addition to his later solo career. His voice was bigger than he was and I don't know of anyone who can really ever sound like him. My brother met him once at the radio station here in Corpus Christi before their concert. RIP Ronnie James Dio.

When I saw Deep Purple i had side stage seats. Richie Blackmore and Ian Gillian were doing a back and forth dual voice vs guitar and Ritchie and Ian almost got in a fist fight on stage. Ian threw his mic at Ritchies head and the microphone bounced just below where I was siting. It was an amazing show at Maple Leaf Gardens Toronto. I also saw Dio in concert and Pantera was an opening act

The singer of (Dio) is Ronnie James Dio hence the name of the band (Dio) LOL LOL & the singer of (Rainbow) is also Ronnie James Dio, he is also the first singer to take over for Ozzy Osbourne when he left (Black Sabbath). The first (Black Sabbath) album he did was called Heaven and Hell. Dio it's also the lead singer of the group (Heaven and Hell) which is the new version of (Black Sabbath). They chose the name of the band to show that it was the Black Sabbath Dio years not the Ozzy years group that had gotten back together to perform. R.I.P Ronnie.......May 16/2020 died of stomach cancer.. (Rainbow) also had guitarist Ritchie Blackmore who was from the group (Deep Purple) & (Blackmore's Night). (Deep Purple) also had Jon Lord a keyboard player he was also in (Whitesnake) along with David Coverdale who was also at one time the singer for (Deep Purple), Rodger Glover bass player of (Deep Purple) was also in (Rainbow), (Deep Purple) also had drummer Ian Paice who was also in (Whitesnake) & Ian Gillan was also one of the singers for (Deep Purple) he was also on one album for (Black Sabbath) & he's also from the band (The Ian Gillan band). (Black Sabbath) also in the '80s had Eric singer as the drummer for a bit befor he went on to become the drummer for (Kiss) in the 90s out of makeup and still is the drummer for (Kiss) now in makeup dressed as the cat man taking over for Peter Criss & the late Eric Carr (aka the fox) on drums.

Ronnie was raised in a household where operatic music was played by his parents. I also remember that in his comments that he had a girlfriend who was an opera singer and he studied her notes, that was possibly the furthest operatic influence in his life.

Hey no, you're not hallucinating. It's RJ Dio. When Blackmore left Deep Purple, he took over a band called Elf with Dio as the lead singer. He fired all the members except Dio and replaced them with professionals. Rainbow is the group that propelled Dio to the forefront. You should listen to their cover of "Mistreated", a Deep Purple song originally sung by David Coverdale, but which was transcended by RJ.

My band covered another song on the Rising album called "Starstruck". Two other songs on there are fantastic, Tarot Woman and Do You Close Your Eyes(When you're making love). Listen to more rainbow and Dio. You won't be sorry. Don't forget the Black Sabbath album Heaven and Hell which is also Dio singing. He died way too soon.

Rainbow is and will remain one of my favorite groups, especially the Dio years. This was an elite group with 3 of the most talented musicians in Dio, Blackmore, and Cozy. Check out some live Rainbow, from the 1977 Munich concert, check out the song "Mistreated" or "Catch the Rainbow" from this concert, it's on another level. They are on another level. Don't sleep on the Black Sabbath Dio years as well. "Sign of the Southern Cross", "I", "Heaven and Hell" and a bunch more.

@@RichardRitenour0522 I think its about more than that- aliens building spaceships powered by pyramids or something- for one thing cause of the title. "Stargazer" not Tower Builder or Rock Stacker or whatever. But also because who needs ro spend years, decades, building a tower to fly off of? Go climb a mountain & jump. Yeah they're in the desert but there were mountains around, too. In the Sinai, if they're in Egypt. Not that it matters, no big deal, but I argue about it sometimes cause I dont wanna say its "just a song." Stargazer is an amazing piece of art, and the way it can be interpreted in many different ways just emphasizes that fact.

@@RichardRitenour0522 I see what you're saying too, but all I'm saying now- and I admit I could be 100% wrong- is there's more than one way for a story or myth to mutate over the years, decades, centuries. The original events that transformed themselves in Dio's mind into "Stargazer" could have occured 100 years ago or 100 centuries. Kind of like playing the game "telephone". Words are misunderstood & translated incorrectly & blah blah blah. I'm not trying to be stubborn or afraid to admit I'm wrong, I just don't think it's a right or wrong issue. I just think Dio was being more insightful, digging farther back into history than even he realized. Or maybe I'm just an asshole. Wouldnt be the first time.

I grew up listening to this music in what I've always got out of this song it's sung from the perspective of someone born into slavery that has been building a stone tower for years there is a wizard that rolls the society he has learned how to levitate slightly that's why when he walks he glides in the beginning he convinced the people that if they would build a tower of stone that he could fly to another star then take them with him after years of building and people dying the people begin to rebel and were kept in line with whips and chains once they finally get the Tower built the wizard climbs to the top of it jumps off falls to the Earth and dies

Ronnie James Dio is best-known for singing in three bands: Rainbow, Black Sabbath (post-Ozzy), and Dio. This is one of his greatest tracks with Rainbow, along with "Man on the Silver Mountain", "Long Live Rock n' Roll", and "Gates of Babylon". I'd also highly recommend "Heaven & Hell", "Children of the Sea", "Die Young", "The Sign of the Southern Cross", and "Falling Off the Edge of the World" from his time with Black Sabbath.

This song is an old, old story of a wizard who convinced the leaders of the land that he could fly, and he said "Build me a tower, so I can fly", and they believed him. So the leaders spent time and a generation of people to build this great tower for this "wizard" to fly out of.... So, they spend years and people, slaves, etc. building this tower.... and when it was done, it was time for the wizard to fly.... The wizard climbed to the top, and stood there, and jumped off..... as could be expected, he fell instead of flying....fell to his death. And then they realized they spent all this time building this tower, spend all these lives building this tower, all because they fell for this wizards trick that he could fly. This is the gist of the song.... it is an old legend....
