I actually saw him one of the last times he was still touring with sabbath. You could tell he was still into it for sure. He tried climbing on top of a speaker and couldn't quite do it so a roadie ran out of the shadows to help him lol Man could he still belt out those lyrics though. He sounded so good even towards the end of his life. Absolute legend

Love Ronnie James Dio, what a voice he had. When Dio was the vocalist for Rainbow, one of my favourite songs was 'Stargazer', brilliant song. Also other favourite songs when he was the vocalist for Black Sabbath - 'Heaven and Hell' and 'The Sign of the Southern Cross'. 'Rainbow in the Dark', is from his solo career, another great song is 'The Last in Line'. All fantastic songs from an amazing guy with a fabulous voice!

The "actual" story is very different. He was at a concert and a fan was being rude and flipped Dio off and he gave the sign of the horns aka cuckold to him which is that only with the thumb across the fingers pointing down but people in the crowd did it back to him with their fingers downward and thumb outward which is the Malocchio and that gave him the idea to keep doing it because the crowd kept doing it through-out the concert when they got crazy during a song.

Someone has probably said this but Ronnie James Dio wrote this describing the depression and overall hardship financially after leaving Black Sabbath. His wife, Wendy, convinced him to start his own band in 1982 after being in several other bands since the 1960s including Elf, Rainbow and Sabbath. Maybe since the 1950s. So Dio got in touch with his buddy Vinny Appice who had been in Sabbath as well as the drummer, and the two grabbed some guitarists over the years, several in fact, including Vivian Campbell, and you had the band Dio, named after him, until his death in 2010. He was the greatest front man ever for metal and he knew who paid him. He always treated his fan base with respect and I understand he would remember names over the years after only meeting a person wanting an autograph once. I have read several comments attesting to that. Ronnie James Dio is the godfather of metal. You really should listen to some of his songs with Rainbow or even go back to his days with Elf when he played guitar and sang. (yes I am that old). Time for a RJD rabbit hole!

1st lead singer of Black Sabbath Ozzy Osborne, 2nd lead singer of Black Sabbath Ronnie James Dio. Both became stars as Solo artists. Heaven and Hell by Black Sabbath with Dio, Ironman or War Pigs Black Sabbath with Ozzy. Rainbow in the Dark about 82 or 83 maybe. Those teenage years are blurry. I saw Dio live at least twice, one with Sabotage and MegaDeath, the other time I can't remember. I just know it was 2 different arenas. Saw the Holy Diver tour and the Last in Line tour.

My fave story of this song is very fitting for the time. More or less they were metal heads thru and thru and said "keyboards? Never!" Then someone played that synth/organ riff and they looked at each other and said "ok, keyboards!" That sound, like you said. They felt it when they first heard it too. Talk about kickin shizz up a notch. The magic of the studio sometimes.

Ronnie James Dio was 40 years old by 1982 and out of a job again after he was sacked as the singer of Black Sabbath after replacing Ozzy Osbourne in 1980 and releasing 2 successful albums and a live record... He and wife/ manager Wendy Dio decided that Ronnie was established as a heavy metal vocalist and it was time to form his own band... Sabbath's drummer Vinny Appice went w/ Ronnie. Sabbath's record label Warner Bros. was interested in a new record from Ronnie James Dio... so, his first objective was to find a guitar player and settled on Irish guitarist Vivian Campbell of the UK band Sweet Savage... Ronnie played bass initially as he, Appice and Campbell started writing songs for the new band... Ronnie also played keyboards and came up w/ the synth part for 'Rainbow in the dark'... (It was ironic that he was in a band called Rainbow between 1975 and 1978) Ronnie said that he hated the track and wanted to cut up the demo tape but those in the studio objected and told him it was great... He later admitted that they were right. Eventually, Jimmy Bain (bass) who had worked w/ Ronnie in the band Rainbow joined the new band and the album 'Holy Diver' came together quickly... Ronnie and Bain played the keyboards on the record (Keyboardist Claude Schnell was hired for the tour) Ronnie and Wendy Dio decided that the band name should be Dio since Ronnie was a famous singer and the name was recognizable to his fans and they knew what to expect - a heavy metal record. Released as Dio's debut album in 1983, 'Holy Diver' became a classic... it sold gold, then platinum... 'Holy Diver' and 'Rainbow in the dark' were the MTV singles and other popular songs included - "Don't talk to strangers" ... 'Stand up and shout'... 🔥🔥🤘🤘Dio was a hit on tour, performing songs from Rainbow and Black Sabbath in concert, as well as new songs. Dio's second album 'The Last in Line' in 1984 was even more successful selling platinum w/ the singles - 'The Last in Line'... 'We rock' ... 'Mystery'... and Dio was selling out arenas on tour. Many felt that the 3rd Dio album 'Sacred heart' was a misstep... keyboards were more prominent on that record... Guitarist Vivian Campbell was sacked after a bitter dispute w/ Ronnie over finances and Craig Goldy (guitar) did the tour and joined the band until 1988... but 'Sacred Heart' only sold gold in the US (half million copies) w/ the singles - "Rock n roll children" ... 'Hungry for heaven'. The 4th Dio album 'Dream Evil' in 1987 sold poorly, despite being one of the best Dio records in the catalog w/ tracks like - 'I could have been a dreamer' ... 'All the fools sailed away' ... 'Sunset Superman' ... 'Naked in the rain'... After guitarist Craig Goldy left Dio, he was replaced by 18 yr old British guitarist Rowan Robertson... but creative tensions in Dio led to Jimmy Bain, Claude Schnell and Vinny Appice all leaving the band by 1989 (They formed the short-lived band World War III) Dio finished the 1990 album 'Lock up the wolves' w/ Robertson on guitar, Teddy Cook on bass, Jens Johannsson on keyboards and drummer Simon Wright (who had played in AC/DC between 1983 and 1989) ... The album was darker and slower like early Black Sabbath w/ early R&B influences and fans did not like the new album or the new Dio band. 'Lock up the wolves' was a commercial failure... Ronnie ended up disbanding Dio for a Black Sabbath reunion in 1992 w/ the album 'Dehumanizer'...but it fell apart by 1993 after Ronnie James Dio refused to open for Ozzy Osbourne in concert... He reformed a new Dio line-up in 1993 and released 'Strange Highways'... but he'd missed the opportunity to be as popular as Ozzy.

Dio's greatest song. The song that MADE him as a solo artist after he left Black Sabbath, the song that is his enduring biggest hit, the song that is the name of his autobiography, the song that every time I saw him in concert brought the house down in whatever venue he was playing in. The legendary Ronnie James Dio is most definitely amongst the pantheon of rock gods. Also, I have two pieces of trivia: 1) the creepy bespectacled guy in the video was played by Rowan Atkinson (Mr. Bean), and 2) the guitarist, Vivian Campbell, would go on to join Def Leppard in 1992, following the death of the original guitarist, Steve Clark.
