In the song he's basically saying no matter how bad it gets, I'm still here for you. Coupled with the story in the video showing her mental illness - a musical gut punch. I cry every time.

She appeared to be suffering from manic depression. You can love somebody with every ounce of your being & soul & you can take everything they're pouring out, but no matter how much you love someone you can never love them enough to heal mental illness.
@scrooge9900118 күн бұрын
I see it as him telling her that he is never going to leave her, no matter what avenues her mental illness leads her down. His love for her will never fade! Life can "fire away" with whatever it has, he will always be there for her. Unfortunately in this story, she gives up on herself and ultimately on him by giving in to her mental state.. as a husband who will never run, and has a wife who suffers similarly with mental issues and who has had to struggle through PTSD as she was a first responder for many years.. this one always hits home! 😢💔

As an officers wife...this video hits diffrent. Sometimes our partners are so busy with strangers and the job of helping others, at times a spouse will feel lonely or last on the list. It's easy to understand in this occupation role, how depression and mental illness can happen. It's definitely not easy im sure for a spouse of any first responders. Definitely not for the weak and a support group is essential. ❤️

I am the wife of a retired police officer and you hit the nail on the head. We somehow come in last as a priority but we hold it all together for them. I completely get what you are saying - you put it into words perfectly. After he retired though, I finally became his focus and it’s been nice…

I hear ya & relate. My husband retired after 21 years. We are often seen as irrelevant by others who compare us to our spouses. They go through a lot. We do too. A lot of emotional, physical, intellectual & spiritual energy goes to making sure they’re ok as well as our children. Sending love your way. ❤️🩹🪽💗

I was introduced to him with “Tennessee Whiskey” which is a story of love. My other song by him after this one is his version of “It’s a Man’s World” and his version of the “Star Spangled Banner” is so special it’d be a shame not to hear.

She sinks into mental illness from which he cannot save her. He's basically talking to pain "take your best shot" you can't hurt me more than I've been hurt. He can be strong enough for them both - even though he can't fix her, he's kind of almost praying for her problems to land on him so he could rescue her

I've never had a significant other with mental illness, but my Mother had schizophrenia and had episodes similar to this video. She tried to self end multiple times, in multiple ways so this video hits hard and triggers the pain, helplessness and disorientation you feel as being the person who cared about that person.

The song gets me every time. I don’t watch it too often because of that. Seeing it thru your eyes was very cool especially when the revelations came. My heart started beating a lot faster as story unfolded, & as you were putting two and two together. (this is country blues. Many types of country. Myself I don’t like straight country, usually) She was bipolar. Her husband, the cop, loved her so much and stuck by her, no matter what which is more than we can say for many people in the same situation specifically with bipolar disorder.

Chris Stapleton had never done a video and was kinda told he really needed one. He said, fine, this is what I want to do. He personally picked the actors for this video and wanted it to address mental health/illness issues, and I believe the video has help numbers at the end. It was something he felt very strongly about. When he told them what he wanted to do, well of course they were not sold, but he insisted and it's great. So sad, incredibly sad, but it really makes an impression. You need to hear him sing Tennessee Whiskey, the Austin City Limits take. OMG.......
