Oh that is neat! Those bearing seem pretty good given the spin down time of the flywheel inside, 20kRPM that's some nice speed. The iris lock is very clever engineering. I had to laugh at your comment about nothing beat cheap. I gave up on cheap with my digital calipers and soldered in a solar cell :P Thanks so much for the shout out! The prism optics should be completely replaceable with first surface mirrors. Most of the prism are used as 90 degree reflectors that use total internal reflection and not a coating. It makes for clean images and no worry about coating degradation unlike a mirror.

Hello, I have a very similar gyroscopic bino, the fuji stabiscope. It is old but works very well and i would like to take care of it the best I can. Would you recommend doing any kind of preventative maintenance to it, or wait until a failure to open it and service it? Also how would one lubricate the flywheel bearings in the event they every get noisy over time? Thanks in advance.

when they get noisy they suffered some damage, i would lube them before that happens. replacing those is annoying and you need special low friction ones like ceramic

I have the same Russian gyro binoculars, have had them over 25 years, use them for fishing on boats, there a little heavy, noisy, but recently they quit working, the red light comes on but doesn’t spin up, any ideas?

On second thought, mine started making more of a loud screeching noise

either the bearings failed or the motor brushes are worn away both can be replaced but it takes a few hours of work
