Isn't it sad how a band member is rated by "popularity" of the band at the moment? Geoff is an excellent singer, Michael and Chris work together seamlessly on the guitar, Eddie and Scott worked together excellent, kinda makes you feel sorry for what Cliff/Jason/Robert had/have to work with for the band Scott and company were opening for in this. I like Metallica well but Lars is probably the most overrated drummer of all time.

I remember taking my sister in law to see this show with Metallica and she had never heard Queensryche before. She cried during the show. That's how you know a band is truly great when it evokes an emotion that cannot be contained. She still talks about it. This band is hands down the best progressive metal band of the era.

Saw this a few days earlier in Dortmund, opening for Metallica. This was Queensrych in their prime and they blew Metallica away, both musically and for having a much better mix. Came mostly to see them and remember leaving during the Kirk Hammett solo...

swampscott2670 They blew Metallica away damn right. I saw them in Leiden, it felt like they had a podium of just 10m2 but the sound and the set were amazing. Geoff hit every note, Chris, Michael and Eddie were spot on and Scott was out of this world. Never ever saw an opening act better than QR, they should have been headers already by then, they were in their prime. After Chris left in 1997 the band lost its magic, he was the spider in its web.

l recently read an artical in which the masterpeice(operation mindrime)was rated on a scale of 1-10 on various aspects of its content. After reading and trying to relate to the critic,it became painfully obvious this group knew absolutely nothing of the true storyline or its theme yet labeled it as an 80's commercial sellout that didnt stand the test of time. Are you kidding me? That album is the defenition of a conceptual master peice.Absolutely one of a kind.Without a doubt my deserted island first choice.BRILLIANT

I've always been a huge QR fan, and when Operation: Mindcrime came out it blew people's minds. It's conceptually brilliant, the arrangements are utterly original, and the guitar work is absolutely clean and rhythmic. Scott Rockenfield is one of the most underrated drummers out there. Tate had a voice like no other. I'm not going to say my songwriting was anywhere near this level. It still isn't. If I want to tell I story I do it one of two ways: I write a novel (I write science fiction) or an instrumental guitar piece. I don't write good lyrical music. I consider Mindcrime to be of the highest plane of lyrical metal. The popularity of this album galvanized the truth that many of us metalheads were serious thinkers and wanted something more from our genre. We wanted something that dealt with the reality of the world, government corruption, crime, the human lust for power, justice and injustice. Mindcrime has everything. That album just wrenched me when I heard it. I can think of very few times when an album, concept or not, got to me. I felt the drama of the music, and it helped me deal with the world. Iran-Contra and all sorts of ugliness where going on back then. The 80s were not the chair of bowlies a lot of people think they were. The world still had its problems. Mindcrime dealt with these problems. It's the first metal album to deal with the drug war as well.

No, he was not underrated as a guitar player (both DeGarmo and Wilton were very very good). He might have been a bit underrated as a backup vocalist, because his voice is surprisingly good (for someone who isn't a vocalist). Where he was definitely underrated was..well.. how do i say this... it became very evident that DeGarmo was the "engine" of the band.. he wrote most of the songs, etc. When he left, it created a void that simply could not be filled. For me personally, when DeGarmo left, Queensryche died.

I was there at Köln Sporthalle in 88. Queensrÿche opened for Metallica's And Justice for All tour. The first song they played was Queen of the Reich, which does not appear in this video I don't know why. Queensrÿche performance was incredibly accurate and the sound was fantastic. After this Metallica played so loud that I've spent three weeks with continuous feedback ringing in my ears. I thought I was going to be deaf forever.

PL wasn't just a great album. It was a Prog masterpiece. It's unfortunate that people seem to lack the insight and open-mindedness to enjoy that album. It's actually the one that first introduced me to the band. People love to make Geoff the scapegoat of the failiure that was Dedicated To Chaos yet overlook the fact that HITNF was almost entirely DeGarmo.

Well, Tate was a smoker, unfortunately. This is without a doubt the worst thing a person can do to themselves just in terms of their health, whether they sing or not. But, for a singer, it is vocal suicide because it destroys the one thing a singer needs to sing; lung capacity and the ability to breathe freely. That, and, I will assume, the fact that he was just growing older and the voice, esp. the male voice, deepens and thickens with age.

With training from the maestro David Kyle, Geoff Tate mastered his craft as one of the all time greatest singers ever. While in his prime, he wrote brilliant and incredible songs with vocal parts that pushed his vocals to their limit. Then he toured for years with almost super-human effort, to almost nightly reproduce what is impossible for 99.9% of humanity. It's amazing he did as well as he did for as long as he did. I only wish he would have gone out on top, instead of trying to eek out relevance after the break-up with (what seems like) half-hearted performances with horribly under qualified musicians. Thank you for the good times and your priceless contribution to music Geoff. Go now, be at peace.

One of the best drummers there is with the best looking drum setup I've ever seen used. I would like to know if Scott thought it all up and had someone build it or if he did or if he helped. It makes me wonder what he has done with it as we no longer see him use it. I hope that he would still have it somewhere. Chris is singing higher than Geoff because he does mostly falsettos. He didn't do a falsetto after his solo on "Flame" when he sang that verse with Geoff, which I liked. "I Don't Believe In Love" is Eddie and Chris both doing falsettos, which is why they sound higher than Geoff. Geoff is the only one using a full vocal.

They're my favorite band. But, regarding the topic of when Geoff's voice started to decline, it was already happening in this video. "Take Hold" was a struggle to hit the high note. It's because he was getting older, people. When I listen to recordings of my own voice from 25 years ago, I practically sound like I was on helium. The Warning was the last album where Geoff was literally at his peak, and could do whatever he wanted, vocally. But, it's OK. Geoff and the band gave us a great body of work over the years.

pbr6430 You are wrong about that, It was not in decline in 1988. Go sing on a real rock tour, especially overseas, living on a tour bus, then you'll understand. It looks like they didn't even play "Queen of the Reich" at this show, though they usually opened with it on this tour. But even at this point, his voice had definitely begun changing into what it was during the Empire tour, when he straight up avoided most of the higher notes at basically every show.

I saw this tour and Livecrime in '91. By Livecrime the show was dialed and better than this one. Everyone comments on the smoking part. He hasn't smoked for way over a decade now and the effects of smoking are not what he experienced. His is due to constant touring and singing very difficult songs. Everyone's voice changes as they age. You lose the high notes. He still has sustain which is what smoking would have taken away and it would have become rough like Halfords. His vocals changed too.

Queensrÿche’s setlist (with Tate) were always unbelievably demanding to begin with-especially back then. And from what I understood, they toured like 5 days a week at least. Even if he wouldn’t have smoked, and was perfectly taking care of his voice, it would’ve been dangerous. You hear a bit of constriction in the highs here (1988); they’re not as pure as say the famous Live In Tokyo concert of ’84. But he’s still flexible. In Livecrime, there is more focus for the highs.

Yep...everything on the internet gets blown up into something it never was. He really didn't smoke too heavily and quit about 2000. Met them twice and never even saw him pick up a smoke. Halford, Dickenson and plenty of others have their off days and drank and smoked. I've seen all those bands multiple times and they don't sound too great some nights.

So are you saying you were there smoking and partying with him? How in the hell would you know what happened if anything at all? If you did, you would be worth billions for that kind of clairvoyance. Quit believing everything you read on the internet.

Promised Land was a great album. Actually, DeGarmo wrote almost the entire Here in the Now Frontier set and it was much different, more alternative and void of the more technical guitar playing and interlocking melodies QR was known for. So it really wasn't DeGarmo leaving that did the band in. A lot had to do with the industry at the time and QR's desire to go in different directions musically.

This is pure joy, listening to QR firing on all cylinders. All the theories posted here on why Geoff's voice faded over the years, especially taking a hit starting with the "Empire" tour. Well, QR was mostly just doing 45 minute sets as the opening band for their "Warning", "Rage" and "Mindcrime" tours. Starting with "Empire" tour, the set time doubled to 90 minutes as they were now the headliners. That was a certainly a great endurance strain on Geoff's voice right from the start and his vocal chords were just not able to sustain it...especially since that highly successful "Empire" tour lasted more than a year I do believe. Geoff was and still is (for his age) amazing. A real trail blazer vocally, and a wonderful song writer/composer.

Umm what? Geoff Tate is a baritone - perhaps more specifically, a lyric baritone - who has the ability to push his head voice higher and thinner. Another classification could be dramatic tenor, but lyric baritone and dramatic tenor is a blurred line. This all speaking in terms of classical voice.

I saw this tour in April 1989. Queensryche opened with Queen of the Reich and it was one of the very few shows on that tour where Metallica switched instruments for Am I Evil. James on drums, Jason on guitar, Kirk on bass and Lars "singing" if I remember correctly. Great show, still have the ticket stub.

I saw Queensyrche about 3-4 years ago at a small venue in So. Cal. It was just the band, the fans and the music; no theatrics, pyrotechnics, video feed in the back, etc. I was very impressed. Geoff Tate is as good live as on CD or better. Everyone's vocal range changes with age, but that didn't impede his ability to belt out the music better than I've seen in most concerts. The best part about rock/metal bands is there is no autotune to make them sound good on CD and suck in concert.

Mike Tayon I agree in a sense that age requires that you pay more attention to what you do to your voice. And if you are not careful enough you may end up with no voice at all. There are many examples of people that took care and continued to perform well: Dio, Pavarotti, Michael Kiske, Glenn Hughes, and so on. The problem with Geoff's voice is that it radically changed between 88 and 91. Just compare Empire with Operation Mindcrime, the voice sounds so different in certain songs you can almost say they got a different singer. Some say smoking did it, some say playing many live shows did it. I believe it was a combined effect of all. He did not preserve his instrument and as a result he lost it. Fast.

His voice was strong during this time of the band. Rock/metal singers put a lot of strain on their vocal chords especially with the touring. Drinking, smoking doesn't help. Regardless, we got a chance to enjoy his voice and Queensryche. BTW, no love for DeGarmo from anyone? Seriously, so underrated. He plays perfect at ever show I've seen and any convert footage I've seen. Such a polished musician

QR were the pinnacle of the genre.. A whole nother level of musicmanship, and Geoff sounds pretty damn good here considering he'd been belting QR songs on the road for about 5-6 years by this time, they are absolutley historical in the Metal music world. Listen to Live in Japan '84 tour...

I saw them less than a month later for the first time in Indy. Geoff still had this voice at that point. Something happened to him in Japan in 89 that changed his voice and made those higher notes more and more harder to hit.
