It's crazy. I found a forty year old Tartan black watch Pendleton shirt that is paper thin yet warmer than most jackets I've owned. I had it under my Duluth work jacket during a snow storm and actually had to remove it once I got inside because it was too warm! Not sure how this makes sense because I have owned tons of wool garments. Their blankets are still probably one of the best things you can own. I regret giving up my Topeka Plains when I moved last time .

Prices for Pendleton board shirts over here in the UK are way over what you pay in the US or Canada, the RRP is close to $300 US. I have managed to source a couple second-hand at great prices and in great condition because, like you say, they age phenomenally well. For what it's worth, I recommend the UES heavy flannel with all my heart - easily shares the stage with likes of Samurai, The Flat Head etc, but at a much more attractive price. Thanks for the vid, I really enjoyed that!

@@atomictdog1558 Yep, £250 from Pendleton UK, which is about $310 US. To be fair, I've checked a few retailers based in mainland Europe and they're not much better, so I can't blame it all on Brexit. Even though I really want to.

@@bootsjeansandtheoddwatch I live in The Netherlands and just ordered a pendleton Brownsville coat which was 370 euro incl shipping (which was 90 euro's) from a webstore in the US (the territory ahead) I'd pay 1000 euro's on the Pendleton euro website for the same model. Prices here are so insane it's better to import from the US, I usually stick to ebay for my pendleton gear.

Really solid review. Definitely a fan of the more muted colors. I've got a bunch of flannels, all from the Goodwill or Goodwill Bins. Prices: $2 Bins to $7.99 regular Goodwill store (they sometimes have them for ($9.99 or more, won't pay that, they jack the price up because of who made the shirt, if it was Iron Heart then fine, LOL). I like to try the different brands, fabrics, heaviness, fits. I sometimes buy them, wear them for a bit and then donate them because of them not making the cut, finding better stuff I wear more often. Here in the Pacific Northwest people don't wear Pendleton or embrace it, I have no clue why. I think maybe in the "old days", 1960's/1970's or prior they did because it was locally available and I've found Pendletons and their off-brands at thrift stores over the years that say Made In Portland Oregon.I probably wouldn't buy vintage Pendletons online because of how many I've seen in thrift stores that say whatever size they are, but have shrunk to be 1 or 2 sizes smaller and seem like kids sizes. Also, many vintage ones I've come across have had holes from moths eating them. Waiting for a nice board shirt to appear at Buffalo Exchange because I have a credit there from stuff I sold. They have Pendleton stuff generally. Passed over a vintage USA blue/green checkered board shirt yesterday there for $24 because it was just too Christmas-y. You said what I had thought, the newer shirts are softer. I had been wondering that. I'm more likely to buy a new "slim fit" Pendleton vs. an old one. I find that vintage clothes are just really a way to jack up prices. Been thrifting for almost 3 decades, old/vintage clothes are cool and quality, but I'm not willing to spend $75+ for stuff the seller bought at the Goodwill bins for only a few dollars. The one item I might buy for that price would only be a vintage USA made US Navy peacoat, I love those for winter! The Schott or Sterlingwear, etc that were actually contracted to make coats for the military in the past, so you know they are heavy, warm and solidly made. Love those and they are made to last and never go out of style. All the JCrew, Old Navy, etc ones are cheap and not the real deal.

the board shirts are a bit roomier than the other three [lodge; fireside; western] and I still wash them instead dry clean but don't put in drier for more than a slight minute to knock out wrinkles if at all probably. the woolrich can have thicker warmer models, but now they can be twice as expensive?

That brown board shirt is gorgeous! Perfect for pairing with some warm-toned denim, like the dirty fade. Not sure why people complain about the itchiness of wool shirts. They're made for winter. Wear a long-sleeve shirt under them. A Stanfield onesie is exactly what many guys wore under their Pendleton back in the day.

I had one of their canterbury shirts that was 80% pima cotton and 20% merino wool. It was itchy and I was in between sizes where a small was too big, but an extra small was a bit too tight. Ended up giving it to a friend. Honestly, I think any percentage of wool in a top for me is a nogo, my skin may just be too sensitive. I did thrift it tho.

I can definitely see that, wool is a tough one, especially because it’s not like denim where it gets soft over time. It’s just always scratchy haha

That’s because if you look under a microscope those fibers are sharp. It was a defense by the sheep. Merino will be the softest. Some people just can’t do wool unfortunately.

It’s to keep you warm without bulk. AIR is insulating you that’s how wool works…including the boxy fit. Wanna be warm or get a “flattering fit”?
@bootsjeansandtheoddwatch
@bootsjeansandtheoddwatch Жыл бұрын
My understanding is that the air insulation is within the woolen fibres so the fit wouldn’t be a factor there…I’ve had wool shirts with all kinds of different fits, some more flattering than others. I’d like to be warm ‘and’ get a flattering fit haha

@@bootsjeansandtheoddwatch yup just like how goose down works, but with goose down(and fiberglass insulation for a house) the air pockets are tiny. Styrofoam coolers use the same theory. When you break apart foam it’s not clean, flat break. That’s where tiny bubbles of air or other gas is impregnated.
@pabloplaysguitar
@pabloplaysguitar Жыл бұрын
@@bootsjeansandtheoddwatchyes! When I was in the Army I was taught about layering, the clothing alone won't keep you warm. The trick is to get hot air circulation going on, think of yourself as a tiny igloo.think of a Husky dog, theyre meant for the cold , their fur is great at trapping hot air

Does anyone know the reason why Pendleton didn't put a buttons on the pockets of the board shirt? It seems to me like the flap is elongated enough so it doesn't need a button, but I could be wrong. Easy access? Vintage Levis wool shirts have the exact same design as the board shirt, by the way. The old shirts look exactly like the Board Shirt. Their Levis LVC line has recently done modern reproductions. I recommend the Den In Denim KZbin channel if you are into vintage Levis, he does Levis history videos and reviews of historical Levis shirts, jackets and jeans.
