@@Saltman. I think many of those who didn't like the film didn't understand what Todd Phillips do. To me Joker is a tribute to Scorsese and the mid-80s. Joker's Gotham is the New York of 1984 and Arthur Fleck is inspired by the story of the vigilante of the New York Subway. I'd compare Joker to Jonah Hill's Mid90s. These are both films tribute to the teenage directors and cinema of this period. T. Philips was very inspired by Scorsese while J. Hill was inspired by L. Clark's Kids. I'm not saying that everything was successful. But the film nor deserve the shitstorm he was subjected nor the excess of praise.

It also portrays any mental health institutions as very incompetent, even though that's not true either. This may lead people who were thinking about getting help from that kind of institution second guess themselves and even not look for help. Joker is a nice movie, and Definitely needed one, but it's faaaaar from perfect, and far from realistic, even though it tries to look like it is.

While I don't think it's a masterpiece or anything, I do believe that they did a good job of researching how derailment of some mental illnesses go. I'd much rather have something like the Joker where it can be a well done warning on treating mental illness rather than something like 13 Reasons Why that glorifies mental illness.

In Joker, rich people are basically cartoon villains, while in Parasite, the rich family is... just a family. The parents had their jobs, the daughter was a stressed student and then there was the kid who needed babysitting. They felt much more human than they would be if written by Todd Philips. Joaquin Phoenix's performance was great, but thinking about the movie itself now, the stuff happening around him felt kind of over the top.

The "politics" around the Oscars involved a criticism of the academy for not being inclusive, specifically for not including nominations and awards for outstanding performances of color, or by foreign creators, so I completely agree. However this has also lead to the Oscars having record low viewership. It may well be a calculated decisions to do a 180, and appear inclusive finally. THAT SAID, I am not saying thats why Parasite won, I love Parasite and I think it deserves every award and every Oscar it won. If you have not seen it, you are doing yourself a HUGE disservice.

It was a proud moment for the Koreans to be winning these awards, as the first non English film to win best picture. So it makes sense to why he couldn't haven spoken a lot English on stage. Plus they did have an Interpreter there as well, so is that not enough for the haters? For example, you look how many guests spoke foreign languages at last years Game Awards, nobody was complaining because they appreciated these guys hard work. At the end of the day, people are just triggered that it wasn't Joker or 1917 or any of the other "Non Foreign films" lol
