The whole point of a slide is so you can freely slip at an accelerating rate. So if you're engineering a slide and the idea to add a cage *for safety* crosses your mind, to stop you from freely moving - that's the biggest indication the slide is already too dangerous. Don't add something to remove the danger - just remove the danger so that you don't have to add stuff.

The moment I saw that metal grate over the slide I was like, “oh shit-“. Humans have a grab instinct when falling, even in that short video you can see the kid at one point tries to grab the grate to slow themselves down. So even if you’re not accidentally throwing your arm through the grate a lot of people are probably gonna end up with dislocated shoulders and broken arms just from their survival instincts kicking in.

He's absolutely right. I used to love water slides. Right up until I went down one with a huge corkscrew. I had too much speed going into the corkscrew, and ended up on the roof of the tunnel. Only to not have enough momentum to get all the way over, so I just fell from the roof and slammed straight onto my hip. The corkscrew was the only part of the slide that was a full tunnel (the rest was a "halfpipe"), so if for some reason I'd been on the roofing as I came OUT of the corkscrew I could have been thrown from the slide entirely and dropped 50 feet into the parking lot next to the slide (which was on the edge of the park). After that, I swore never again...

Most of the handles you grip on to are missing and the seatbelts were shit. you don’t want to be the person that chickens out and has to walk all the way back down and ruin it for the rest of your group. Since we're all talking horror stories, I've got one. I think this was at Ontario Place or something, but wherever it was they had this whole river with octagon shaped boats crammed full with people on the edges. You rotate it, can kinda guide it, etc. Anyway, see that particular ride had no age or height requirements and no vests requirements or warnings or anything that the slow float along would end in a waterfall. I mean a completely vertical drop into a very wavy pool. The damn boat flipped mid air and almost drowned me. Some fucking idiot kicked me in the nose as the drop/flip started. Broken nose, almost drowning and an awful sunburn AND I didn't even get a funnel cake afterwards.

Charlie's rant at the beginning sparked a childhood memory of mine. So there's this lil waterpark I love that had 2 of this slides, one with a closed top and one with an open top. Being a child I didn't wanna go in the dark closed one but I got around to it and it became my favorite one. One year I slide down the closed one a couple times and felt a raised part that would scrap me whenever I went down. Thought nothing of it. A week later the slides were closed because a kid went down the closed one and his arm got scratched open by that one part. They closed down the slides for the year and the next summer we had brand new slides.

When I was a kid, maybe like 10 or 11, I went to a waterpark near my aunts house, and went down this absolutely massive, straight down, no tube slide. There was an open slide, and a tunnel slide, and I chose the tunnel because I was young and scared and it felt safer. Not only did I hit my head off the top of the slide on my way down, but when I got out at the bottom my entire back was beet red and cut up because there was hardly any water on the slide. I never went down a slide like that again haha

I went down a cart slide in the mountains of Colorado a few years ago. it started raining as we got to the start area, which makes the breaks on the cart not work, but the person running it gave us the the ok to go. as me and my family of 4 over weight adults and 3 small children went down one after another on the 2 lane ride. half way down we realized the breaks weren't working and everyone started panicking obviously. it leads all the way down the mountain, and at the end all of us crashed together. my cousin jumped out of the ride before the end and broke her arm and got a concussion. my step brother, who was going down with my baby brother, was the first down and crashes into the tires ment to stop you incase this happens, but everyone else crashed into the carts sustaining minor injuries. some turns were tight with a "slow down" sign, and when we'd get there we'd have half our cart outside the slide almost flying off the mountain. if we were just a little bit less lucky someone could have easily died.

I rode the Speed Slide at Wet n Wild in Queensland, Australia when I was younger and I got off terrified and shaking. I LOVE thrill rides and water rides, ive never been afraid of any of them for i've always felt safe on them. I was tall and thin when I rode this slide and I went down it normally, didn't launch myself or anything as this one was already quite high and vertical. Anyone who looks up a pic of the slide can see that it has 3 humps and no safety railing on any sides, just slighty raised lumps on either side of you to "keep you in". The first hump sent me into the air, and I landed my back on the railing, knowing that that scared me I tried to realign while still jettisoning towards the next hump as that hump launched me again, this time towards the side where you would literally just fly off.. no net anywhere, just ground and my head went over the side as i caught myself and then went down the rest of the slide. It was like no more than 10 seconds on that slide and it still feels like it was an eternity. No one really saw it or approached me after and I was just exploring the park by myself at that point.. had to go sit down as my fuckin life flashed before me and I ended up slipping a disc. Back in the summer 2016, I nearly drowned in Aquatica's Breakway Falls. idk if I'm exaggerating, but my first (and only) experience with that ride was the opposite of pleasant. For context, this slide is where they have you stand on a platform and then they drop the floor from beneath you and you go straight down the slide (they DO have a "normal" slide off to the side as an option for those who don't want to be dropped). They didn't allow me to wear my goggles or nose-clamp. They did the procedure where they tell you to cross your arms and legs. I had fun for only the first second until water immediately went into my eyes, blinding me. Water went into my nostrils, leaving me with only my mouth to breathe until my mouth was full of water half a second later. I basically had water go into every orifice on my face. Because of how fast I was going down the slide, the water that went into my mouth was propelled deep into my mouth and I couldn't spit it out until I got to the bottom of the slide. Basically, I couldn't breathe for the whole thing. Not to mention that the first half of the drop is in darkness. So yeah, it's dark, my eyes are full of chlorinated water, and I couldn't breathe. idk how so many people can handle that ride

Lol reminds me of a scary one they have in Galveston here at our Schlitterbahn is one of tubes where you cross your arms across your chest and jump down like 190*+ ft. The scary part is the slide starts off like 90* degrees flat to a like -5* degree angle that slowly slopes back to the regular down slope. So your back comes off the slide and you are legit 180 ft in the air and you ARENT touching the slide for a solid 1.5 seconds till your back slides back down in contact with the slide. Best part about this ‘tube ride’? They have NO ROOF on the tube so if you shot it fast enough off the initial slide angle you could possibly NEVER reconnect with the slides downslope again. Shits mad sus. Felt like I was gonna die. This ride also wasn’t enclosed and definitely felt like I was hopping off a skyscraper Still rode the ride 2-3 more times to impress my potential gf I brought there lol

Now, using a mat to slide down water is a fine idea, BUT...when you dont have enough water on the slide to keep the mats from hitting dry spots and suddenly catching, sending you ass first down a slide you werent meant to be on without said mat, it ended up with most of us kids actually scratched, angry and in the teachers words "ungrateful." She was paralyzed for life. I'll never forget that story. Slides are dangerous yo.

One thing about the slide at the end that I think Charlie failed to mention or maybe didn’t consider is that it could be a state fair, or even a traveling fair type of slide. The kind that barely meets the safety requirements. I definitely have memories of seeing these kinds of slides at state fairs and thinking they looked sketchy.

In general, I don't ride State Fair rides. They set that up in a few days. At most, there's only been a few dozen rides conducted. If someone screwed up during construction, well, I might be the unlucky guy who ends up crippled/dead. With permanent rides, you know that it's been done several thousand times with no fatalities (it would've been shut down). So, my chances of being the first death are dramatically reduced.

Ive always had this phobia which haunts me every time someone suggests going to a waterslide. I’ve always been afraid that these geniuses that created these slides will have made a mistake and some splinter-like piece will have slightly been lifted up, but not enough to be torn off. This will then slice into my back as im going over it, at these high speeds. Its very difficult for me to explain what i mean, but I hope yall understand what im talking about. Because of this phobia I actively avoid waterslides and anything that has to do with them

Until I was then horrible reminded that the second most dangerous thing besides the slides themselves was the idiots on them. All the slides had a stop and go system that honestly didnt make sense, and many of them werent supervised so people sometimes just didnt follow them and wait their turn properly until the first got out. Which in the end culminated in 12 year old me, getting out for maybe a second before a severely overweight lady slammed ass first into my neck. Fun times. I hate water parks

I live near a waterpark with the (according to them) longest kamikaze style slides in Europe (115m or 380 feet long slide). Strangely, it's not the most unsafe slide of the park, because it lays on the side of a hill and it's not made with those awful junctures. The red kamikaze, however, almost killed a dozen of people in the last 30 years: it has a hill in the middle portion and if you are too heavy or too fast, tou risk to go over the side and drop two stories directly onto hard concrete and people walking beside the slide. Always hated it with passion.

One time I went on a slide at a local water park in the UK, it was called Armageddon. It was an 80ft vertical drop water slide. After the drop, I was slightly off (less than 6 inches) by the time I was at the bottom. When re-joining the slide I smacked the lower part of my back at what felt (like you say) terminal velocity. It hurt to walk for a week after that. Unfortunately that was about 20 years ago now and this park isn't open anymore, so kids of today can't experience the joy of feeling instant gratitude that you're still alive from a "fun" thing.

I love waterslides because I see them as a preferable alternative to rollercoasters which I am irrationally afraid of. I've even gone to water parks knowing they are far more dangerous than theme parks with coasters. Thing is, I'd seek out the especially big and dangerous looking slides. I loved the thrill, the chance of real danger somehow made it more fun, yet I still hate rollercoasters. I followed the Veruckt project as it opened, and even made plans to go there and ride it myself. I ended up not going and it was closed not long later. I totally would've ridden it though.

My own water park story: in 2014 I went to our county's water park for the first time since I was a kid with a couple of my school friends. I decided to finally try conquering my fear of heights by trying the 50-foot drop slide and totally ended up regretting it. My ass lifted an inch or two off the slide as I went down and I got an atomic wedgie on the way to the bottom with a bonus enema. I'm never doing that ever again. 😂 And seeing the title, I already knew you were gonna mention Verrückt and I'm glad you didn't show any of the photos or news footage. The first time I saw a news clip in 2018, I had no idea what I was looking at. The second it finally dawned on me what the red stains were was the second time I'd ever come close to fainting at the sight of actual blood.
