As a theatre fan, but not an avid Wicked fan, many Broadway mega fans are huge on musicals like Les Miserables, or Phantom of the Opera. those two musicals are the goats in Broadway world, and they are ENTIRELY MUSIC. hardly any spoken words in them. So yeah, being overstuffed with music is definitely a huge plus for big Broadway fans
@Predated2Ай бұрын
Eh, depends Les Mis and Phantom are as big as they are because they are spectacles on their own. Every song tells a story and has slower bits to keep telling the story. But if you ever liked Family Guy or American Dad, you like musicals
@nanvolentine9110Ай бұрын
I saw them both, and they were awful! They just don't make 'em like they used to.
@Predated2Ай бұрын
@@nanvolentine9110 Nah, Phantom is literally the staple of musicals. Same with Les Mis. Basically any musical you've seen has either been inspired by the writing of Phantom and Les Mis or by watching them. If you want awful, you should look at Doctor Zhivago. Even Footloose, which at the time was considered groundbreaking, just is mediocre at best. The songs are mediocre, the story is literally a dad and his goons refusing to let people dance, because his son died in a carcrash. And the dad is the only one who is needed to change his minds and suddenly his goons who were also super against dancing are suddenly glad he changed his mind. If you dont like Phantom or Les Mis, then odds are more likely that you want the storytelling to happen more like Kinky Boots, where most of the story is told in spoken word before "amplified" with song rather than have the story progress during the song.
@Catherine.Dorian.Ай бұрын

As a longtime theatre fan, this was probably my most anticipated movie of the year. I’ve always wanted to see the stage show but sadly haven’t ever been able to do so. I was a tad worried that the movie wouldn’t feel as magical as seeing it performed live would feel, but knew I’d still enjoy it regardless. Glad to say that, despite my worries, it absolutely met my expectations! The casting was perfect. I don’t know if I’d go as far as to say Cynthia Erivo should get an Oscar for her performance as Elphaba, but she 100% owned this role. I literally could never imagine anyone else fitting as well as her after seeing this. She perfectly captures Elphaba with just a look: A woman who goes against everything but also never really had the chance to be part of it in the first place. You can see her cold demeanor break down and literally warm up to Glinda as their friendship blooms, which adds so much extra tragedy when she ends up having to rebel and become the ‘Wicked Witch of the West’. That’s not even to mention her voice. Her vocal performance throughout the movie was enough to rival Idina Menzel’s iconic performance back in the Broadway days. Just an absolute powerhouse of a voice. And that’s just her! Ariana Grande gives a great performance as Glinda, doing a great job of matching the ‘rich snobby girl’ with the ‘Good witch’ she will later become. This show is extremely reliant on that relationship between Elphaba and Glinda, so I am happy to report they manage to sell the chemistry. I genuinely felt myself shedding manly tears when Glinda finally let go of her pride and helped Elphaba with her dance. These two had a solid chemistry that truly is the heart and soul of the story. Casting in general was excellent. Every single actor felt natural in their respective roles. Jeff Goldblum as The Wizard is a casting choice sent from the gods and he perfectly captures that ‘charming snake oil salesman’ vibe that he needs to have. Michelle Yeoh definitely managed to steal the spotlight from his as Morrible. Having never actually seen the musical, I had no idea that she would become an antagonist. Michelle did such a perfect job playing into this in a way where I truly did not see it coming. Yet, it didn’t feel like she was playing two completely different characters when she showed her true nature. I could 100% believe both sides of Morrible as a supportive mentor and an active hand in Oz’s oppression. So special shout-out to her for managing to capture that The sets were wonderful. Oz as a location has the potential to be whatever, so it’s nice to see the filmmakers try to get creative with how a magical land like Oz may operate outside of just the places we’d seen previously through Dorothy’s eyes. Shiz really does capture the vibe of a magic school without feeling like it lacks its own identity. The Emerald City manages to feel like its own magical depiction without just straight copying from the original film. And, the one thing I am thankful to report, it did NOT feel soulless. I was so expecting some generic green screen CGI backgrounds that wouldn’t capture the warmth and whimsy of Oz, but they did a great job making the locales feel real and lived in regardless of the methods they used to create it. The message sadly hits a tad too close to home. I think this is a musical that will never really be irrelevant with its message about othering people and the dangers of unity through bigotry. The main conflict comes ahead when the animals of Oz that were once given the same rights as people are forced to conform to becoming not even citizens. We see this most with the goat professor Dillamond, whom is forced to resign from the school due to his not being human. The scene in class where he sees the cruel message left for him on the chalkboard was handled quite well. Despite being a goat, Peter Dinklage’s vocal performance managed to so well capture the pain and fear within him. I know damn well I’ll be bawling when act 2 comes out and we discover his fate after such a great job bringing the character to life with only a few short scenes. This musical really could not have come out at a better time, for better or worse. And, of course, this conflict leads to Elphaba being similarly marked as a target to Oz after she defies the Wizard. While we’ve yet to see the full extent of this due to it only being part 1, we still see it with the opening number of ‘Nobody Mourns the Wicked’. Watching the munchkins’ reaction to the news of the witch’s ‘death’ is played perfectly. What is a celebratory number for themselves is, in actuality, a horrifyingly tragic cult-like song for those of us who know the truth. Even sadder still seeing Glinda forced to play the role of ‘relief’ despite her clear reservations having to pin her closest friend as the villain even in death. Them burning the large statue of Elphaba was a great touch as well, truly showing how bad their hatred of the witch had gotten. I’d say that the opening number does a great job of engaging the audience into this tale. From the opening shot of the witch’s hat as she lays ‘melted’, to the flying monkeys’ flight throughout Oz (with a cameo from Dorothy’s crew on the yellow brick road), to the shots of all the wicked witch propaganda in Munchinkland it just gives off this epic and climactic atmosphere. The movie really does take advantage of it being a film version of an already iconic musical and origin of an also iconic film. There’s definitely a lot of ‘legacy shots’ and references to the original story, but it is well earned here. Wicked feels like the literal best case scenario for these types of movies like ‘Ghostbusters Afterlife’ or ‘Lightyear’ or any of these other films trying to base off nostalgia. Whereas those films struggle to earn anything more than an ‘I know what that is’ response throughout, Wicked manages to recontextualize its predecessor in clever ways. From Elphaba’s green skin to the yellow brick road to the silver slippers to even her hat. Basically everything gets explained in this story, yet it doesn’t ever come across as just ruining the magic. Somehow it just works here. ‘Defying Gravity’. I wanted to save my thoughts on this number for last. If nothing else, the movie deserves to exist for its rendition of Defying Gravity. Being the Act 1 closer AND easily most recognized song in the musical AND being the final song of the film, there was nothing short of humongous stakes and expectations for it. I’m glad to say they completely sold this song and forced an ugly cry from me. The cinematic sequence of Elphaba flying on her broom for the first time mixed with Cynthia Erivo’s powerhouse of a voice is impossible to resist. I don’t think it’s even possible to watch this scene without getting chills. I wish I could put it into words properly, but I really don’t think I can properly make anyone feel the magic of this scene myself. It’s just… perfect. Absolutely perfect. Even listening to the song now still elicits a strong response from me. 9/10. I still hesitate to call it a perfect film, but I really couldn’t discuss anything that genuinely bothered me about the movie. I guess some songs weren’t my favorites and i would have loved to just see part 2 already, but that’s the worst I think I can personally say. If you’re a fan of musicals, see this NOW. Legit may be my personal film of the year, although I’d have to review everything I’ve seen this year to decide that.

Also, it's not just a song characterizing the prince but the song serves a purpose in highlighting the way the students (and really how most people) can be persuaded to just...be willfully ignorant? The students do not care about the obviously unjust, weird things going on at the school. Like only Elphaba seems to give a shit and everyone else seems content to live in ignorant bliss and be like "eh well its not my problem,everything's fine, the wizard will sort stuff out".

However, you went in just blind and still found a sense of enjoyment out of it. I definitely see your reasonings of why some things dont need to be sung. Spoiler Alert! Fiyero (the brainless jock bro you were singing about) literally is the Scarecrow-yep, Mr. “If I Only Had a Brain”-and that’s 100% intentional. The whole story is built on the idea of not taking things at face value - especially the sudden songs, and the way they connect everything in this world is wild. There are so many Easter eggs that tie back to this theme, and by the end of Part 1, you’ve actually met everyone except Dorothy without even realizing it. I usually hate musicals, but Wicked is the one I actually love. Why? Because every single lyric has a backstory. Every line has meaning. It’s not just a bunch of random songs-it’s all connected, and it’s honestly genius. If you’re not catching the layers, you’re missing the best part.

Right, i feel like wicked actually has solid songs that convey either references to future events or tie into a theme/character moment. I be fucking it up during Dancing through life everytime 🤣 but I can see for him how it can seem like they sing a lot and be annoying bc all the songs are pretty long (all positives for me, i freaking love musicals) and have the talking parts in the middle, which if you were to think the song is over cause theyre talking and then they just get started on verse 3 I can see the irritation 💀

As someone who also despises musicals, I think the point Charlie was making wasn't that the songs don't have a point - it's that the message many of the songs have can still be conveyed through basic verbal/non-verbal dialogue. A movie doesn't have to break into song every 5 minutes to tell you the same story
