To be fair, high quality camera phones have multiple sensors and lenses that could have easily filtered out light scattering that would have made that log actually unseeable to the human eye. While I was a courier I used my iPhone in the same way to easily see 3-5 times more clearly and further when driving through bad storms. That being said the technique requires very good peripheral vision and spatial awareness so I'm not surprised he got stuck there even if it was obvious to see on his phone.

My buddy has a cottage on a cliff overlooking the lake and it was a regular passtime for us to drink and watch for the riders to come too close to the beach and hit a rock patch or flood the intake with sand.
