Love the 9500 ' s - great detailed video. Tricky reattaching the BAIL-ARM under tension with the bailspring moving.I always attach spring-cover first , then the BAIL-ARM!! Cheers

Glad to hear it helped. Usually gets stuck on the upper end with salt buildup in the hole next to the dog. You can use rolled up sandpaper to get rid of it after you remove the eccentric. Add grease to the hole after. The tougher one is getting off the click (second) dog lever itself when it's inundated with salt buildup. Tell your friends about the channel.

What would cause the bail to slam shut on this model? If I activate the anti reverse switch to off, I have no problem with the bail slamming on casts. But with it on it does this every casts. Any suggestions? Should I remove the bail spring? I would rather not file down the trip lever post. Thanks

Thanks for checking out the video. In theory, if it does it when you engage the dog, it should also do it when it's disengaged. I can't think of a reason why you would be experiencing this. The bails on these were a little light, so they were fairly easy to accidentally trip. You can try converting it to a manual bail (check eBay for the conversion kit), or try carefully bending the bail wire more open with your hand.

Hi again...I was trying to re-spool this reel with 50lb maxcuatro power pro line (25% thinner than standard). I used to have the original power pro in 65lb and it spooled fine, but the new line is spooling heavily at the top and I had to pull it off. Is this going too far past the original specs of this reel for 20-30lb mono? I tried to fashion a shim but then the drag would not work...

Hi, I'm assuming the crosswind block is secure and you're spooling it under a somewhat consistent tension. If the 65PP spooled fine, the maxcuatro should also. I don't think the thinness of the braid should be an issue. Just checked a 9500 I currently have in for service.... shimming that reel might be tricky... you can't go above 0.50mm or the drag knob won't catch the tread. Try putting the 65PP (or 30lb mono) on and see if the issue goes away. If so, then the thinness of the new braid is most likely to blame. Can't think of anything else right now, buy if you're still having the issue, post a video of you spooling the reel to show what's happening.

so whats the trick in putting the spool back on? I screwed something up putting it back on and now I have no drag..help...

There's no trick to putting the spool back on. Just line up the keyed metal washers with the shaft. Is your issue with a 9500ss or 9500ssv?

Im having trouble with the little nub on the cross main gear hitting the main shaft block and just locking the reel up. I can reel a little one way then STOP then real a little the other way and STOP...any ideas?

Figured it out...wasn’t seating the nub in the back of the block lol

Glad to hear you were able to troubleshoot and figure out the cause. That's kind of what sounded like when you described it. One of the beauties of those older reels that have the anti-reverse switch to turn off and on, this way your reel doesn't bind up and you have a much bigger problem on your hands. TSG Reel Service I seriously want to buy you a beer for this awesome tutorial. The last time I tried to do this with no instructions or assistance it did not go well at all...lol. I have an 8500ss and one of the newer 850s to do next. I have two ~15 year old Shimano Thunneses id like to tear down but the addition of the baitrunner makes me nervous!

🙂 thanks, I'd probably accept the beer! Baitrunners can be intimidating, and some can be downright tricky. Try watching my video on a Shimano baitrunner 3500 (I think) to help get familiar and comfortable. I have many videos to edit, but I have the 8500SS done already, so I'll post that one next for you. I don't have a thunnus video on file, sorry.

I guess PENN 8500ss much better then 9500ss. 9500ss have no carbontex and the main gear not brass. Share me your opinion mate
