I believe that this was their first viral video. I saw an old picture of Scott as a kid pointing to one of the stars on the walk of Fame. Now Pentatonix can be that star for other kids. Pretty darn cool.😸

Gotye himself edited together a video of his favorite YT covers of this song, calling it Somebodies: A KZbin Orchestra. PTX is featured heavily in it, especially towards the end. Highly recommend checking it out-it’s a really great video! Ben Bram has told about being in an airport bar not too long after this video went viral, and he saw Gotye in there, too. He walked up to him, introduced himself as Pentatonix’s producer and collaborator, and Gotye told him that he was a big fan of their cover of his song. I believe that was the first time they had ever gotten a reaction to one of their covers from the original artist.

Such a wonderful video - thanks for reminding me of it. I loved the Gotye video, and from the YT list, I saw the name Pentatonix for the first time. It is one of the few covers PTX did which I don't consider an upgrade, like Papaoutai, but for me both the originals and their versions are equally incredible.

My favorite Mitch song where he sings in his lower register is “Find You”. It’s a Zedd song that Evan Duffy rearranged for Mitch. Evan Duffy is a phenomenal composer for movies, video games and TV. Evan plays the piano for Mitch on this one too. It’s a great video, check it out please!

As an Aussie I've always had a soft spot for the original by Gotye featuring Kimbra- but this one just hits different. A bit more angst? Grit maybe? Anyway apparently they filmed it in the very early days in a parking garage for acoustics !

That's interesting about the parking garage, I know I read they had practiced, and recorded some stuff, just behind their apartment building so they wouldn't disturb the neighbors, the garage just shows they were more creative than I thought.

Going with what you were saying about it touching something ancient, you know all those quotes about how "Every culture came up with X, that's why it's important"? Well, every culture has some type of music. It's as definitive a thing as it can get for humanity. It's something that in it's most base form, removing all other things, just people can do. It's the reason even people that can't carry a tune in a bucket like singing along with songs. It's not just humans that make music, but it's definitely something every human can and/or does do.

So fun watching this with you! I loved the original by Gotye (check it out if you haven't), and found this through that video. It was the FIRST PTX video I ever saw, and I was a Pentaholic from day one. I've sung for many years, and it's so much fun watching them grow and seeing all the reactors who are musicians and singers appreciate their genius. I also love that little run Mitch put into the chorus - it is just perfection. See you in the next one!

He was invited and a seat in the front row was saved for him. He chose not to show up.

When a band gets a star, former members are also invited. Avi chose not to come, probably because he wants to concentrate on his own music and future instead of the past. It sometimes feels strange, when PTX are talking and dancing around the subject of Avi, but it has been speculated that they are not allowed to talk about him without his permission.

They don't mention his name and he doesn't mention theirs which I think is very sad. Both their bit onstage telling their origin story and Matt's speech during WoF awards ceremony do make it clear that Matt is not an original member. I suspect that is all they can do.

Going to get nasty comments about what I am about to say, and I really do not mean anything bad...But I think if Avi had stayed, they would have more Grammys. Matt has talent in his own right..but Avi wrote his own parts, and he was exceptional. The combo of him and Kevin cannot be matched.
