After listening to Matt several times, I do not believe there is anybody better grounded in this field than you are. I'm so thankful I came across your podcasts. This is just the beginning of someone that I will guarantee will become highly successful and popular in this space. Best wishes, Matt.🎉

I totally relate to being pissed off about finding out I was deficient in vitamin D. I had severe back pain for 6-7 years. I had talked to a couple doctors about it and been blown off. I saw an Ortho about 5 years ago who told me I had a degenerated disk and that that was the cause of my pain. That if it got worse we could talk meds and if it got worse after that we could talk surgery. I didn't like either of those options. A few months later I decided to get a physical. My vitamin D was 20! I started taking it and within 3 months my pain went away and my hair stopped falling out. I was so angry that no one had suggested doing blood work. Anytime I hear someone talking about some kind of ailment I tell them to get some blood work done.

Very helpful and informative video. Thank you. Regarding FDA safety, the reliability and trustworthiness of FDA safety, in my opinion, has been seriously lacking for quite some time. For example, look at some of the Pharma products that have been approved by the FDA based on "Pharmaceutical quality research" done to support efficacy and safety ie. Purdue Pharma influencing the FDA to approve dangerous opioid meds, resulting in the opioid crisis in USA. (see the movie "Painkillers"). Also, consider the dictate to blindly "follow the science" with robust debate being selectively ignored or even silenced by otherwise reputable science journals, FDA/Fauci, etc. Also, the VAERS reporting system has taken a big hit because of skewed averse events data reporting during the pandemic. I am finding it ever more difficult to follow "scientific consensus." The consumer is left with having to do DIY self care until the medical community plays catch up.

Great overview on supplement seems spot on. As a Physician MD looking at the data I am also considering taking rapamycin are you doing your 12 week cycle 5mg per week and when do you start this cycle. From an immune system standpoint the greatest risk of infection in elderly populations seems to be in the winter months do you start your cycle in the fall prior to the winter or are you doing it for a longevity potential benefit? I also take protein and creatine the rapamycin would seem to have an opposite effect in turning off MTOR that the protein stimulates. Your Vit D, B, and Omega 3 should all potentially push down your homocysteine levels decreasing your dementia/vascular risk- what are your thoughts on the potential effects of statin use of lowering blood cholesterol and raising dementia risk? Peter Atia seems to be shooting for a very low Apo B level this increase the dementia risk? Great talk common sense really enjoyed it- from Seattle originally dad was a Boeing engineer go Huskies! Good as we age
@alaneverett9767
@alaneverett9767 5 ай бұрын
I believe you have to have a rational logical goal for dealing and taking supplements. We know that a large number of molecules in our body gradually go down as we age. My goal is to return the levels of these molecules in my body to what they were when I was about thirty five. This has to be done conservatively and with constant reference to pub med searches and other reviews. Even with these types of reviews, it often leaves you guessing about dosages And whether you use "hit and run" dosages. There's also the issue that a number of these sellers just sell you flour or other fillers and have very little of the drug in their product that is listed on their label. It also can get quite expensive. For example, based on recommended intake, most people are deficient in choline. There is good evidence that choline deficiency, at least in babies causes fatty liver disease. When they added Choline to baby formula the babies stop developing fatty livers. Is this a treatment for adult non alcholic fatty liver disease? Having said this if you take too much choline as an adult, you can end up with a known risk factor for heart problems: TMAO. The only way to responsibly take choline is to do testing for TMAO. To add to the puzzle, choline is in a lot of the energy drinks that are commonly available. We need professional level. People like yourself to need to begin weighing in on some of these issues like you are trying to do. Keep up your podcast, it's gonna gradually improve the level of discussion in the online community. I believe a lot of people who are watching these youtube Presentations have the same goal that I do. Maybe one day we will finally have enough evidence to actually reverse aging rather than just increasing health span.

I’m curious if you eat a certain diet because of your high Lp(a). I stopped eating red meat when I saw my Lp(a) number, it was 380 nmol/L and since cutting out red meat and all dairy I’ve been able to bring my LDL down from 194 to 108. I know you can’t change your Lp(a) by much, my recent test showed 330 nmol/L so down a bit but because of my high Lp(a) I try to keep my other numbers really low.
@jamesgilmore8192
@jamesgilmore8192 4 ай бұрын
As I understand Lp(a) is also cleared in the liver, it just sits behind other particles through competition for the receptor. However I'm not sure of the ref, perhaps Tom Dayspring mentioned it. Reducing competition by reducing LDL may reduce Lp(a) by that reasoning, and you need a well controlled self experiment to show that.

I really enjoy your podcasts and participated in the million-molecule challenge . I read a huge number of clinical trials (including ITP) and am starting to understand the terminology. I do measure & take ~13 supplements a day. One thing in this podcast I question is how taking a number of supplements is different from eating foods that contains significant amounts of these same ingredients. The foods I eat on my omnivore diet contain a huge number of proteins, small molecules, & other substances.

My understanding from another video is that the reason behind making nmn classified as a drug is so that funded studies could be done on it. In other words there was some kind of blockade to research and conducting studies (either financial or the kind of studies that could be done or the speed with which studies could be done) without making it a classified as a drug. Is this true at all? If so, I’d assume it’s not something that would be forthrightly explained because it’s a loophole to be able to do properly funded studies.

Hi Matt - like your very cautious approach to supplements - now this month new study on vitamin D u talked about here. Have you reviewed this new study? It looks at both vitamin d and calcium so maybe can’t be used fully if one should supplement with just vitamin D for benefits. But does seem to indicate vitamin D supplement not to powerful compared to something like rapamycin? This below summarizes study as reported in Forbes magazine. There’s a huge new study, just out this month (March 2024) in the Annals of Internal Medicine, that followed over 36,000 older women, looking at the effects of a combination of vitamin D and calcium over a 22-year period. (Participants took vitamins for 7 years, and were then followed for another 15. That’s a really long time for a study, and kudos to the authors for their determination and effort.) The scientists leading the study looked not only at the effects of supplements on hip fractures, but also whether supplements changed the risk of dying from cancer or heart disease. The results? Well, the study found no reduction in the risk of hip fractures, which isn’t surprising given that earlier studies found the same thing. But because it was such a lengthy study, following people for more than 20 years, they could ask something else: did vitamin D and calcium have any effect on mortality? Or to put it more bluntly, did the supplements prevent death? Well, no. But the report was a bit more nuanced than that. It turns out that deaths from cancer went down a tiny bit, and deaths from heart disease went up a tiny bit. First, though, let me explain the overall experiment. Approximately half the women in the study, just over 18,000, were assigned to take both vitamin D and calcium every day. They were given pills with 1000 mg of calcium carbonate (400 mg of elemental calcium) and 400 IU of vitamin D3 daily. The other half of the participants took placebo pills, but neither group knew whether their pills were placebos or not. Over the course of 22 years, 1817 women taking supplements died of cancer, compared to 1943 women in the placebo group who died of cancer. That sounds kind of good, right? The study authors report that this result - 126 fewer deaths - was statistically significant (just barely), but there are good reasons to be skeptical of this “significance” claim. On the other hand, 2621 women taking supplements died of heart disease, versus 2420 women in the placebo group. So there were 201 more deaths from heart disease among women taking vitamin D and calcium: not so good. Combining both causes of death, we see that in the women taking supplements, there were 75 more deaths from either cancer or heart disease. The study also reported numbers for all causes of death, and there were still very slightly more deaths in the supplement group. (The annual death rate increased from 2.14% to 2.15% for those taking supplements, a non-significant change.) So on the whole, taking supplements didn’t seem to provide any benefit at all, and it certainly didn’t reduce the risk of death. Why would supplemental vitamin D and calcium increase the rate of heart disease, or decrease the rate of cancer? Well, first I should emphasize that it’s entirely possible that these supplements have no effect at all, and the difference in death rates must just be random variation. There have been multiple studies speculating on how vitamin D might help to prevent cancer, but the effect, if any, is very small. And as for heart disease, maybe, as the authors of the new study speculate, long-term calcium supplements create calcifications in coronary arteries, which would be a bad thing. For now, this is merely a hypothesis.
@markus4980
@markus4980 5 ай бұрын
This Study is stupid and the people behind also. Calcium is nothing we should take, there is enough in food and water. Everyone shoud know that Vit D leads to hypercalcification in higher doses. So combining this two Supplements is not very wise. thats the reason why we should take Vit D together with Vit K2 and Magnesium. K2 takes the Calcium out of the blood and into the bones also do magnesium. the other thing is, D3 with 400iu daylie is nearly nothing and i wouldnt expect anything different to a placebo. D3 between 2000 and 5000iu/daylie with Co factors k2 and magnesium are pretty well studied, safe and have many benefits.

Astaxanthin showed life extension in the ITP but the equivalent doses in humans would be quite large. I believe there was a decent study from Japan showing a benefit for heart health. Astaxanthin seems promising but more research is needed. Not sure about the others, I think fisetin failed life extension on the ITP.

@@gaston. Interesting, I have reactions to vit D and xylitol both popular. I am certain putting Astaxanthin cream on my face was the reason I was able to get the glasses restriction removed from my cdl. Internally I take intermittently can't say that works.

@@InsolentVillager I'll believe the preponderance of evidence (like what 95% of experts agree on) rather than a few individual family physicians or MD's who are not even researchers themselves and are highly controversial in their takes. I don't know all the names but at least two of them are keto or carnivore evangelists. But please, continue believing what you want. It's very hard to get people out of certain believes ones they are fully converted so I'm not going to try convincing you. But please do be careful parroting misinformation, you might cause harm to others. You might respond well to a non-fiber diet yourself, but for most people it's safer to follow the general guidelines. Most people do need fiber and will get dangerously high cholesterol on meat only diets (check WebMD, Harvard, WHO, MayoClinic, American Hearth Association, and any real nutrition expert out there).
