I am a licensed plumber. The plumber in the case ripped her off from the beginning. He knew full well that the pipe that was leaking was on the gas supplier's {Con Edison} side of the gas meter and yet he charged $2500 to re-tighten a fitting. Wow. Then he lies in his testimony saying that the plumbing contractor has to repair the piping on the gas supplier's side of the gas meter which is a lie. The gas meter and all the piping leading to the meter are the responsibility of Con Edison, NOT a customer. The piping on the house side of the gas meter are the home owner's responsibility, and he knew that. At 3:50 he states the the INLET pipe to the meter had the leak. He's a dishonest plumber and I hope he reads this comment. He lies and tells the judge that the INLET pipe to the gas meter is his job to repair. How did the judge not see through this lie later in the case is beyond me.

Too bad for the plaintiff because she actually did get scammed. The resident is only responsible for issues at the outlet side and into the house line. Poor lady didnt know 😔
@nunyabuisness75524 жыл бұрын
I've worked both sides as a contractor for the gas company and the customer side as a plumber and I don't see a scam here. What I do see is the utility made the original mistake and told her to call a plumber. He gets there and finds a tiny leak on the customer side which is "extremely common"! Usually those leaks are so small they are ignored or not noticed but after he noticed he's required to fix it or he becomes liable! After fixing that he tried to get the gas on but noticed the "plugs" in the line which at one time were probably allowed, grandfathered in or weren't noticed. If he applies for a permit to get her gas back on an inspection by the city happens and if they notice the plugs they won't approve it and require they be removed costing more days and cost of work. He tried to bypass that to benefit the customer not his own pocket! Those plugs are NOT a "safety issue"! Those plugs are a "theft issue" only! Many people don't realize that anywhere between 30% and 50% of all properties with natural gas piping older than 20 years has leaks inside and outside! Unless leaks are large or pose a significant danger they aren't ever fixed! Most gas companies do not profit from the natural gas itself but they do profit from the "service of the utility" and that part of your bill stays the same while the amount of gas and cost of the gas at time changes on every bill. Utilities are under corporation commission control and price setting. Money isn't there to replace old lines unless the corporation commission allows an increase and the cost would be enormous!

She should have filed the lawsuit against the Utility Company, not the plumber. She would have had a better chance. Utility companies will do everything they can to make sure it is not their responsibility, even when they know it is theirs. When you move into a place no matter if you're a renter or buyer, have the gas company sign off on it first to make sure it is within code. If it isn't, make the seller or the landlord make the necessary repairs at their cost. The story that she gave at first said that the gas company came out and told her to hire a licensed plumber. This is where the problem started. The gas company could have fixed it right away if it was a leak just at the inlet side of the meter. But if the gas company detected gas inside the house, it likely wasn't coming from the meter outside. It's possible if it's close to the house but in that case, it is still the failure of the gas company to check their side first and retest. They could have saved that woman a lot of hassle with competent and honest dealings.

Gas companies like Con Ed will do everything in their power to not pay or make gas line repairs. That is why most of them want you to buy insurance, which is separate from your monthly bill for situations like this. They want extra money for you so that is why they make up these rules where if it is within your property line it is your responsibility to have it fixed not theirs. What you said makes no sense. The way it works gas company is liable upto the meter and home owner is liable after the meter. The gas company probably came out and so the meter was running implying a leak in the home. Granted the leak in the home may have been really tiny and the smell may have been coming from there end but once the gas is shut off everything automatically has to be tested and brought upto date. Chances are they had a guy come out saw leak he fixed it and another crew came out and found the one on service side which by that time they didn't see a leak because he had already fixed it and probably didn't realize what he was saying. I worked as a plumber for many years and everything he said sounded legit granted he did seem kinda expensive but then again I don't know the going rate in their area. What he said about the plugs was true you can't just cap gas lines and leave them and pass code.

Anything from the road to the meter is the gas supplier issue (usually). Pipe from the meter going into the house and anything beyond that is houseowner issue to fix. If the plumber tried to fix issue on supplier side it means he tampered with their property and had no right to touch it. If he’s registered with the supplier as one of the plumbers they send out under contract and in that capacity tried to get money directly from the plaintiff then he’s a scammer and thief. And that would explain why the supplier was asking for documentation because that call for the job did not come directly to them. Very shady character!

She is trying to hold the wrong person accountable it is not the plumber that is in the wrong the plumber is doing his job and needs to see compensation to run his business, who she should be going after is Con Edison.

Harvey shouldn't have just interviewed women when he asked that question, that's BS on his part.

You are right. A scammer is going to be a scammer, it doesn't matter what industry they're in. If they think they have someone who they can get, they're going to get them. If they think you know nothing about the problem or the parts, the work, and permits required... they will get you. Doesn't matter what your gender is.

The judge didn’t use to yell as much, and she has also become very rude, and short with the litigants to where she doesn’t let them talk. I wonder if she’s trying to be like Judge Judy to increase the ratings.
