A friend of mine, Henk Timmer worked on the NIEW AMSTERDAM as a librarian in the 1960s, maybe into when the ship went into retirement. He loved working on her. Enjoyed walking past the large globe that was outside the dining room. I managed to find a color photo of the globe. He told me they had tears in their eyes when she was taken away to be dismantled. Sadly, he passed away a few years ago.

Danke, Theo Doeve. Thankyou. As a baby I moved to America on the New Amsterdam. Half my ancestors were Dutch (Delfzijl and Nord Beveland). My parents became American teachers in the Netherlands (Drenthe) and in Denmark. Family friends from the Netherlands also visited us, sailing on the New Amsterdam. At the time I didn't know that was the same ship I'd been on. I don't understand many Dutch words, but still it was good to hear.
