Note that people don't need to go to breeders to get German Shepards; they are one of the most popular breeds in shelters and will often get euthanized even without behavioral issues simply due to lack of space.

Excellent video!. I have two Rescue GSD's. The large black male has bonded with mostly myself while the female has bonded with the entire family. The male is intimidating and quite protective while the female is much more gentle and friendly. Having said all that, the female will put the male in his place if she thinks he is getting too playful with our small dog or the kids. The GSD is definitely an all round fun family dog, active, highly intelligent and fearless. I feel I won the Doggy Lottery when I agreed to adopt two adult GSD's I had never met. Amazing breed!

I have and have had, male and female German Shepherds. My females are incredibly protective of their humans and my Boston Terriers. My males watch the yard, but at the same time, they let the females do the work (as in the girls will bark first, and the males only get involved if they think the girls can't handle it.) So much depends on the genetics, breeding and training of these dogs. All my GSDs are incredibly bonded to me, because I talk to them constantly, and my hands are always on them, petting them. Czarina never left my side in the 12 yrs I had her, and now my Ophelia follows me everywhere, while the boys take a wait and see attitude.

The male can be a womanizer which means the female is better in guarding. Thirdly the female hunts goes after birds or pigeons anything that moves. She more active than the male.

I had both. I like the males for guard dog purposes. Many people back down just seeing them. The males can also battle other dogs if needed a lot better than the females. The females are good as family pets. They don't bark as much as the males and are very easy to train. My females were a lot smaller and lighter than the males. The females also eat less. My big males could really eat a lot. Both will go after critters such as possums and coyotes. This is a very adaptable breed that is at home on the farm, suburbs or city. Think about your purpose for getting this dog. A real downer is that this breed sheds fur. Also look out for hip problems.

While he definitely loves to bark in his big voice when someone comes to the door, if the people come in he quickly runs to get a ball to show them and enjoys being petted. He will get along with other dogs when introduced correctly. He is definitely a 5 year old puppy, but has be called very polite. At the groomer they call him the gentle giant because he is so good with the other doges. He is a healthy 110lbs, and people do tend to walk across the street when I walk him, if they don't know him. We had a male GSD that was one of only two in a litter to a large female and came with a pedigree of Austrian and Australian champions. For various reasons we collected the puppy at 13 weeks and by that time he was growing at a fast rate due to having vast quantities of his mothers milk. He grew to be a perfectly proportioned dog of 55kgs but 1" taller than the maximum that pedigree would allow. He was immensely strong who protected the house and us extremely well but he very rarely barked to announce his presence.

Must have been a long coat 2 be that heavy . This ideal weight thing seems a bit of a trap. My gsd male was the biggest in the litter & according 2 the breeders who l live next door 2 said he was just always on his mum milk & pushing the others out. Lovely natured male gsd & at 8+ months is already 37.90 kilos & approx 63/64 cm He is Super handsome & smart
@clivewilliams3661 Жыл бұрын
@@Robert-mn8gc No, he was a standard coat GSD but was as I said bigger than pedigree would accept. He was perfectly proportioned dog and very powerful. The mother was of Australian champion line and she was as large as she could be and she was sired with another large dog, couple that with the fact that she only had a litter of two puppies, you can imagine that they had the very best start even from an embryo. When we were asked to select the puppy we wanted we were presented with two puppies at 6 weeks that were best described as large flat blobs on the floor. We chose the one that actually moved and then collected it some weeks later due to our pre-arranged holiday. At 13 weeks he was on his own with his mother who still managed to give him milk. With that start it was not surprising that he became a giant.

Our family had GSD's. My brother only had males, I had females. His dogs were huge, yet very gentle with family. He's a "Bro" if you know what i mean. Black Camaro, weight lifting, steroids, guns,etc. He named his dogs with masculine names. Diesel, etc. I named my female dogs with German names. Heidi was such a fantastic dog, I named the next one Heidi. So i refer to them as Heidi 1 and Heidi 2. They have passed. My female dogs were just as protective as his male dogs. And they dont piss on everything. Hip displaysia got them all. I paid big bucks with a breeder who had certified papers (and online) linages to show no past problems with hips. She developed bone spurs on her spine, then hip displaysia. You never know. I threw her favorite toy, a Frisbee at the park. She fell down and never walked again. She was in such pain, Morphine didnt help. I had to put my sweet girl down. Its been 10 years now, and I cry while writing this.😢 Im a senior now and live in apartment. I would never put a working dog in an apartment. Even though it would compete me. It would be cruel.

Most owners are laypeople & hardly experts on dog behavior. Professionals are called "professional" for a reason. Also, generalized statements & observations are just that, general. You can find instances of any generalized statement not being entirely accurate if you look hard enough. That's not the point & defeats the purpose of a generalized statement. It's like saying human males are taller than human females then pointing to a WNBA player & saying, "but not always". What's the point you're making?

I'm pretty sure that is a Belgian Malinois at 2:46 , which most people seem to get confused with a German Shepherd. The best dog I've ever owned is a German Shepherd, which I still have. Cheyenne is 11.5 yrs old, and still very healthy, and playful. The only exercise I give her is playing fetch in the backyard. I've never taken her for walks on the cement. I've never overfed her... she gets 2 cups of dry dog food (i.e. Eagle Pack-purple bag) each day, and sometimes she only wants 1 cup. She looks forward to a dog biscuit after eating her food. And since our tap water is terrible, I've only given her bottled water her entire life. Most of the time it's distilled water. As for her personality... she aims to please, and has never bitten me in her life. Whenever I talk to my wife, Cheyenne always positions herself between me and my wife, as if to put my wife under her protection. Cheyenne also knows a great amount of words, and seems to understand whatever I say. I'm hoping she'll make it to 20 yrs. I think, there's a chance.

Had many GSD's over the years. Had males and females together with one female in particular that had a ferocious appetite who one day decided to try and help herself to the big males food while he was eating it. This male we had was 28 inches to the shoulder and weighed 126lb of solid muscular build and gave little miss greedy the shock of her life when she tried to stick her nose into his feeding bowl. Least to say she never tried it again LOL

honestly my female gsd was a lot like this- except she isnt ‘feminine’ per say- many people assume she is a male first time they see her- she has a deep bark, growl, and howl, she is taller and a bit more broad then most females- but yeah other than that yeah- really- my grandfather used to have a silver and black female named Danielle who weighed 120 pounds but could easily jump over a 6ft fence, this was back in like the 80s tho so
@Jasper-yb9cz2 жыл бұрын
also with my female- she is kinda a bit of both for the bonding with people- she bonds with a lot of people, mainly my grandparents and i but she is great with others if they are welcomed there. but she definitely has her favorite which is my grandfather, proud to say im the second favorite lol

@Jasper-yb9cz2 жыл бұрын
my dog is like 72 pounds. thats pretty good for a female german shepherd on the slightly larger side. Danielle was my grandfathers german shepherd, the one that weighed 120 pounds. She gave birth to a litter of 13 pups, 12 of which survived. Yeah she would weigh a lot cause of that. But she could scale fences easily.

Danielle was also bigger than Tova height wise too.

As a 1st gen farmer with approaching 200 acres of land, i'm curious which would be better for herding/guarding chickens, horses, sheep, pigs, and cows. I also grow a variety of market crops that get attacked by raccoons, possums, and other critters. I shoot em when i see them, but id prefer a GSD to help with this issue. Would it be better to have both as puppies and train them? Ive also got 4 small children. Ive also considered adding border collies, and great pyranese since i heard those are good night hunters. Any advice is appreciated, and thank you for this video!

hey can you suggest which one should i get...... soon Im getting a working line gsd and i want the following things in my dog: 1- very affectionate , cuddly and loyal 2- very obedient 3- very loyal and naturally protective (good for guarding purposes) 4- easy to train 5- very clingy 6- good for jogs and cycling trips 7- bigger in size..... please suggest which gender i should go for!
@DogsNowChannel3 жыл бұрын
I would suggest female. Although you wont get the size you get more affection and eagerness to please you. So they won't leave your side and easy to train.

Not at all true! I have the best boy and he is my cuddle bunny. These people have know idea about German Shepherds. It matters more how you raise the pup, hand feeding the first few weeks and helps to increase your bond.
@Derek-qs9dz3 жыл бұрын
@@YukiMuriyama Yes, that makes sense. And i will definitely do the hand feeding. Thank you for the advice. And may i ask just how bad the shedding is? Since im speaking to someone who actually has a gsd lol. Is it unbearable? Is your couch and bed covered in dog hair? How often do you need to vacuum your couch and floors?
@YukiMuriyama3 жыл бұрын
@@Derek-qs9dz I joke he is the rare breed German Shedder 😆 I do a light vacuum daily every few days or so. What really helps is brushing daily, I highly recommend a rake and hand gloves it REALLLY helps reduce the fur around the house.

We have an intact male we've raised from a pup. He's a big snuggly goofball that has never met a person he doesn't love. He especially loves kids. The minute he sees a little person his ears are up ,tail is wagging, and he's locked eyes begging for them to come up so he can lick their face. My youngest calls him her best friend and she cried for hours the first time we had to kennel him to go on vacation. She spent the next few days telling anyone that would listen how much she missed her dog. I do not regret getting a male at all. I couldn't ask for a better family dog.

My Dog 🐕 A male gsd . Just over 8+ months . Height approx 63/64 cm & his Weight 37.90 kilos weighed last week @ 8 months & 2 days old . He is active on my terms so his hip & joints scores remain as exceptional as his parents. 99 dad 98 mum . He was the biggest puppy in the litter by a long way . Hope he tops out at 66 cm & 45k weight . He may be heavier than that by the time he's finished growing. He was bigger & heavier than his Dad at 8 weeks old . Beautifull natured Dog 🐕. Called him " Shadow "

From personal experience, male german shepherd can be very dangerous dog to own, if poorly trained. Dont get me wrong, he is loyal to you to the death but, he doesnt treat other people too well, especially strangers. I would argue that, this is the number one reason why you should properly train them. They will attack strangers if they even remotly sense any danger... or they think some stranger is dangerous. In either case, its bad.

I have a male and female GSD, other than the size and the early maturing affecting responsiveness to training in the female, I find with my dogs, everything else mentioned in this video are complete opposite lol I’m not saying this is the norm, I just find it funny
@suewilliamson81552 ай бұрын
My male is much more affectionate than my female. When I pet her on the head she keeps walking away, so that I 2:11 end up petting her butt. She doesn't like her feet or ears being touched. When we train she is very flighty. ( She is 4). When it's time to train with my male, he comes to me, sits and I swear it looks like he is ready to salute.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I've had good luck with both genders. Who you are is more of a defining characteristic of what gender you would benefit from. Both genders can be incredible if you can mold them correctly.

I had a brother sister team. The exact opposite. is true. Female shepherds are people most likely one person protective ; male GSDs are property possessive. Females are more likely to attack; males wait until muscle is needed for the situation

That’s bigger than the male we had. We are trying to determine if we want a male or female atm. We lost our male in February. He was just shy of 15 years. My husband really wants a male, but we have a female available. The male we would have to wait up until January or later. I would be fine with the female. I think the differences are inconsequential for our wants and needs. Our male wasn’t socialized, and later on it was an issue. I want a dog we can take places and a bit easier to manage outside the home.

We have a male and a female, and this is totally opposite. Male is laid back, affectionate, and goofy. Female bonds with only with her handler and family, much more intense than the male, and always on guard. She is the guardian and dominant one of the house. Female quicker to train with specific tasks.

That's not necessary true my sister has had male German Shepherds most of her life and they were much calmer than the female ones she's had in the past. She definitely prefers the male.
