I’ve been running my 2017 A4 Allroad 3.0tdi sport now for 3.5yrs and 51k miles. I’ve owned quite a few cars in my time and all I can say about the Allroad is that it is perfectly suited to British roads and British weather. It’s extremely comfy, the performance from the 280ps (600nM) diesel is immense and the suspension just laughs at our awful British roads. I’m thinking of changing it soon and I just cannot come up with any alternative. So, it will be another A4 Allroad. They are fantastic machines.

Jaguar F-Pace is probably a great car to think about - perhaps slightly smaller, but the ride quality is amazing - and it has rear wheel drive preference. Land Rover Disco Sport is also great and very similar - cabin wise it's the A4 allroad size. Perhaps it comes in handy :)

Why do people buy SUVs... particularly 2WD ones...when cars like this exist ON THE SAME FOOTPRINT. They look better, ride better, go faster and cost less to buy and run than SUVs. Audi and Volvo have been making these for years now and have it pretty much perfected. If I ever have £85k spare, I'm getting The 330hp A6 Allroad Vorsprung. It's a van, an SUV, a GT car and an luxury executive all in one.

I love that you are taking more time talking about suspensions. This is in my opinion more important that the engine. There is nothing worse than a car that is supposed to be a family hauler /wagon and every time you hit a bump it wakes up the kids in the back seat. I don't care about fake exhausts or 20 minute explanations of exterior design. I've got eyes I can see them just fine thank you. It would be great if you could devise a test for suspensions with some sort of measuring equipment (driving with a full glass of water on the dash is hardly called scientific :) ) Just one question: Which car has more supple suspension: A6, A6 Allroad or BMW 6 GT ?

I watched this video when I was laid up and used the time constructively to research a new car! So a big thanks Joe, this video really helped me decide on an A4 Allroad. And to echo other comments, this is a fantastic car. I have the 45TSI, which thanks to the first owner, had been optioned with everything. Things that are really good: super smooth engine, super smooth ride, the acoustic glazing, really strong brakes, excellent climate control, LED headlights lights. All journeys long or short are effortless. Rock solid and stable in all weather conditions. One unexpected bonus, I live in London and it glides over speed bumps. If you can find a car with these options, I’d recommend: B&O Stereo (awesome), Panoramic roof (feels really light and bright). Things that could be better: Gearbox in comfort around town can occasionally be hesitant when pulling away, but not bad. While the car has cruise control, it absolutely should be adaptive and would make for even better motorway driving, (for this money it should be standard when they manage that on a Golf). The rear view camera can get grimed up.

Bought my B9 RS4 back in May 2021 off the back of your terrific Sonoma Green RS4 review having traded in a B9 S4 Avant (previously bought mostly off the back off Petrol Pee’s review……see a recurring theme here 🤔) As brilliant as the RS4 was, being my only car it wasn’t proving suitable for some of our Scottish Island Roads. Couldn’t stomach a SUV so traded it in for a B9.5 45tfsi Allroad with 5k miles on one of the last made & got a load of cash back from dealer and wish I’d changed ages ago. Brilliant car with a serene smooth competent ride and enough punch for real world use. Sad that the MMI wheel has gone (backward step Audi). Maybe a sign of my age but the perfect balance and ideal car to suit me getting to MTB trails, Munro’s and generally dealing with our shitty roads. Another great review, Joe, and an excellent case not to buy an SUV. The problem is the price just tips it into the band at which the £325 additional VED 5 year premium kicks in. I've had the 2017 252hp version for 3 years and really enjoy it. But there are 2 downsides for me: sound and front end. It is fast but never gives you the impression of being sporty, especially when it comes to the engine sound (looking at exhaust change to remedy this: any advice welcome). And front-end-wise I can't tell why, but I'm never confident knowing what's where when. It feels light and not especially planted, which is weird, but even my dad's very old Q5 gave me more confidence. Can't fault it anywhere else though: comfy, adept at everything and fast if you want it to.

They're not comparable is any shape or form. But the Skoda offers so much bang for the buck. The ultimate budget car pretty much. The A6 is a luxury / premium Avant or sedan. Best thing you can do is drive them both right after each other and you'll find the Skoda rough, noisy and with a cheap interior. But on its own it's hard to beat.
