The lyric of this song is about connection, bonding and about growing up and loosing this special bond and connection we make as children. The feelings she express in this song, is a feeling known to everyone who has growing out of the childhood. That’s what she is tapping in to… that’s why so many of us become emotional listening to this song.

Hi, you are the first reactor who goes to the depths of emotion, by involving her body language, breathing, her delivery of words, the force of her spirit she incorporates within her performance. You're noticing her feeling of not being safe, vulnerable, while expressing her pain, we don't know the source of. Wow this reaction goes as deep as Aurora's performance goes. I raise my hat to you. Incredibly Aurora by today's standards had a very happy, healthy childhood. She was teased some growing up for being different and strange, but had lots of love and support at home. She has experienced some loss, but in general is a very happy person. What she is..is a true empath, and she has the ability to just completely put herself into the protagonist of the story she is telling. Her inspiration for songs usually seem to come from outside sources. But this song in particular came from her. She says in her Haik Documentary that she wrote this after a period of time that she was feeling down and weighted down by life and the world, and she wanted to return to the that childhood innocence and perspective to feel the care freeness of a child, to not forget that. The end of the song is the inner child begging to not be forgotten. The song is like a giant hug, therapeutic and heart breaking all at once.

I learned Aurora has or had great trouble dealing with groups or large gathering of people. With this in mind and her great empathic character may be the source of what we are seeing in her vulnerability. Imagine standing and singing in the centerpoint of this grand cathedral, surrounded by audiences on all 4 sides of her.... What if Aurora is overly sensitive for picking up other people's emotions. Than this stage is a focal point for all that human power and she is standing in the middle of it? Wow...

Aurora convinces herself that everything she is about to sing is happening to her, right now. Vocalists are taught to feel the words. I don't think anybody has ever had to teach that to her. She seems to have an innate ability to become the song, no matter what. You feel it before she even begins to sing, and then every... single... word. Also, be sure to spend some time listening to this same song in stripped form. It is the best a cappella vocalization I have ever heard.

Aurora is not a singer. She is an artist. In every definition of the word. She understands that art is about expression and conveying a message to the observer ,and that great art is capable of evoking a visceral, emotional response in those open to receive the message. it just so happens that this artist's medium is music. And that includes how she uses her voice as an instrument and not just a vessel to carry the words. I've seen many singers cover Aurora songs and I think they're really on a hiding to nothing! A lot of them are really great singers. Some are even technically better singers than Aurora. None of them even come close to evoking that visceral, primal reaction, like Aurora does. She is a very special artist.

Great reaction to the emotion in the song. I heard she wrote it when she was 17 (a child) turning 18 (an adult). My interpretation has come to be that she wrote it from her child self to remind her adult self of the innocence she felt as a child. "Please don't leave me here." is the child pleading to not be left behind in the harsh adult world she is entering - a universal appeal for all humans. A Genius set of lyrics to accompany a beautiful melody and interpretation by Aurora.

There really is something very special about Aurora. From everything I've read about her and from interviews and documentaries, she seems to have had a very happy but unconventional childhood. She is highly empathic and not only can absorb emotions, but also radiate them out through her music, movements and sheer presence. She is highly intelligent, creative and has a vivid imagination. One of her sisters is bi-polar, so I'm sure there were some highly charged emotional events that occurred around her and she has lost one friend in an auto accident and another died in that horrible mass shooting event that occurred in Norway. So she has known tragedy and sorrow. She will also read about events that spark her imagination. The amazing thing is that some of these songs were written when she was as young as 9 years old - her lyrics are amazing - especially considering that English is not her first language. She has become more outspoken and has written songs about issues that she cares deeply about like the Environment. Not all her music is sad though - she has a lot of more upbeat songs, but there is always a deeper message in all her music. I'd recommend Lucky and It Happened Quiet. I've watched my fair share of Aurora interviews, and I cannot for the life of me remember which interview she talked about this song in, but she explained that this song came out of an interaction she had as a child where she had taken a standardized test with her classmates and she had gotten excellent marks on it. Apparently, one of her classmates said "well of course *you* did." and when she questioned them about it, they were like "because you're...you know." And basically, it was the first time she had really been exposed to the idea of autism and in relation to herself. She said that her parents had never pursued any kind of diagnosis for her because they wanted her to feel however she wanted about herself without labels or other people's expectations. So this song spawned out of her wish to be able to go back to the time before she had this experience and could just appreciate things as a child without labels and connotations and stigma. I'll try to find the interview where she talked about it, but it was extremely moving. She's incredible.

Aurora wrote this when she was feeling so overwhelmed by all the terrible things that were happening in the world that she wanted the innocence and protection from it all that comes with childhood. She is very empathetic and takes to heart the struggles and hardships of others so she wrote this when that became too much and she yearned for the bliss of childhood ignorance. Edit: she's never said it explicitly but I have learned that Aurora has dealt with a lot of loss in her life and I think she references that here. Aurora has seen death. A close friend was killed in a car accident in 2014. She wrote and sang the song "Why Did You Go a Place?" It is an unreleased song that the mother of the young girl posted on Facebook. You need to listen to it. Heartbreaking. Aurora lost someone important to her at the Utøya massacre in 2011 She wrote the song "Little Boy in the Grass" for those victims.

It’s difficult to witness this magnificent work of art without weeping. We all carry buried grief over the loss of childhood innocence. The world forces us to grow tough emotional callouses over that tender spot because the pain of it is so unbearable. With this song Aurora has found a way to gently pierce through that protection to give voice to the child left behind. Whenever I watch this performance, it looks like she's trying to hold tears before singing "before they go" and it always makes me cry. She's young, but she has lost a few loved ones (she made some beautiful songs from the experience). So maybe her thought went to those people, especially since this is a place for prayer.

I think that "Something Subtle" is that she is unusually more connected to her spiritual being, than to her physical being. (I gather this from things she has said in interviews) I think this song is about the loss of child like innocence, and that last line makes me think of an Angel trapped in a maturing existence that she doesn't want., asking god not to leave her in THIS world.

There was a time when Aurora only saw all the bad things this world has to offer. She wrote this song to get out of her wystem. When we are children we see the world as a wonderful place. We don't know yet about all the evil that exists. We are loved and safe and think that all our loved ones will stay with us forever. Than we grow up and see this is not how the world works at all. For me this is not my favourite performance of the song but it is great. I think the grief aspect you noticed could be explained by the intro on this video to the full live concert. She was trying to carry the emotions of grief for others at Christmas, a time when it seems there is no place for those with pain during the holidays. Or that is how I interpreted it. I think she may be able to feel for others' stories and emote from that place on their behalf. Followed AURORA (no, I'm not shouting, it's how she wants her name credited!) since 2017. She's unique. She reminds me of Elizabeth Fraser from The Cocteau Twins. She comes from a musical family and started playing the piano at 5. At age 11 she wrote and arranged 'Runaway', her breakthrough song. She writes all her material and directs her own videos in collaboration with a long-time friend. Her sister makes all her outfits for the videos. She's a classically trained dancer as well. She's a national treasure in Norway. My favourite AURORA songs are Black Water Lilies, I Went Too Far, The M*rder Song, Runaway and Queendom. YT has a few live concerts of hers. One was held in a Norwegian forest mid-winter with lanterns and Reindeer, just magical. Another was in a Cathedral with a choir. There are also a few Capella songs too. Watch them as she's mesmerising, quirky and unique. She totally immerses herself in the lyrics and music, unaware of the audience in front of her. It's just her and the music at that particular point in time.

Humans are very tactile, Aurora totally so. In the last 18 months we have been socially and physically isolated. We need to touch, to hug and cuddle. Small children have no inhibitions and touch all the time. Us adults need to remember. The world is a better place with Aurora in it.

Great reaction and comments. You made me think about a difference between Lara Fabian and Aurora. Lara is a consummate actor, and she is adept at portraying emotion, and letting you hear the emotion in her voice. Her voice catches or breaks momentarily, and you have to figure that should about end the vocal performance, but in the next instant her tone is strong and pure again. I feel like Aurora might be more actually experiencing or reliving an emotion rather than portraying it. Those little vocal and physical cues that you mention seem unpracticed, spontaneous and genuine. I don't know, they both twist me up in knots.

In part she's reminding herself not to lose her inner child. It is possible that she's also hitting an inner cord in many of us to not lose our own connections with our inner child that can if allowed continue to inform us today, something that continues to shape our response to ourselves, others and the worlds you we live in. Perhaps quite open to a deep impact, perhaps subject to sharing in dialogue with others or not but at least don't hide. If very painful perhaps some form of counseling would be fair, not to also hide the joyful experience and view forming reminders. If this is helpful cool, definitely not to hurt or criticize. You seem to have taken her performance very personal and as you said "spiritual". Best.

Thank you for a great reaction. Suddenly the ending of the song makes sense. I can't pinpoint exactly what you said, maybe it was this part of grief. She clearly takes the stand of having a childlike mind. As a child you are open to the world, you connect with your parents and other persons that love you, and see you in the meaning see your needs, and take care of you and give you unconditional love. When we grew up we learn not all people can be trusted or want the best for us. In my opinion, what she may be referring to is this innocent non-judging state of mind we have as a child. However, a child may not understand that separation is a part of life. That makes us as children vulnerable to grief if someone leaves us, temporarily or for good because we don't understand. In that light, the last line in the lyrics gives complete meaning to me. This state of mind you have as a child is preferable, but you also put yourself at a risk to be hurt. Brene Brown, a social scientist, is talking about this issue in her books (Daring Greatly: How the Courage to Be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent, and Lead) and talks she has been given. Yes it is very beautiful and emotional. Aurora for me is a master of emotions - she is always very "in" a performance. Aurora's Lyric in a most of songs is not very easy to interpret but there are always important message and emotions behind. But as she said everyone should receive and interpret songs itself. I think the phrase at the end of the song "please, don't you leave me here" means "please, don't leave me in adulthood." The whole song she says that she wants to feel the world like a child again. When you are an adult everything seems cold, difficult and lonely, so I think that Aurora doesn't want to stay here. (sorry if my english was bad, i used a translator)

I agree. This song feels like Aurora is starting to understand how adults view the world and wants to be able to stay as a child or at least to hold onto her view of the world she had as a child. I don't think it's about holding onto naive views either. She sings "Watch them preaching sour lies" so I think she realises that adults adopt lies about "how things are in the real world" to justify the things humanity does wrong and she doesn't want to become part of that way of thinking.

If you want to see something more upbeat from her, I’d recommend Daydreamer from the HAIK concert, or Churchyard from the KEXP concert. She’s so fun to watch when she’s dancing around on stage too! And if you want some more emotional songs: Little Boy in the Grass, Mahogany session is quite emotional. She wrote the song for the children who died from a domestic terrorist attack in Norway (Utoya Massacre).

Your comment is ingenious for one reason only. You speak from the heart. For something like that you have to experience the song, and I don’t know if anyone can remain indifferent. You told a great truth - she sings with her spirit and not her voice. And it doesn't matter the background. She is a singer-songwriter. Have you seen the 54321 murder song? It is so emotional. She read an article in the paper about a man that did this to his wife. She feels it. Some other songs, all in live performances where she can dance freely its amazing.
