Very well explained. It's also important to make an effort to protect your brand. As with bad customer service complaints, it only takes one brain snap, or one comment taken out of context, to cause uproar and loss of credibility. Sometimes you have to resist the urge to respond to comments if you feel you can't do so with a cool head.

+Roberto Blake I'm currently researching what it takes to build/maintain a youtube channel, both for personal use (will be a freelance writer/filmmaker after graduation) and for hobby use (a fan-run archive website that might gather enough support to carry a youtube channel). I think I was watching one of Video Creator's vids on how to get subscribers and engage with them, and I kept seeing videos from your channel in the related/recommended video bar on the right :) Good question! Hmm... since I currently have no use for tech/gadget reviews, so far I found your content on the behind-the-scenes aspect of YouTubing most helpful, with an eye on possible income, and how to create good content, etc. Will venture into your SEO playlist later on, too!

Never have i really tought about personal branding, because i always had a negative view about it. This is the first video i looked up about personal branding, because of my career i have to work on my brand at the same time i dont want to act as if i have a brand that is not close to my heart. But your video is really good man. Can you recommend me some books or free videos about personal branding?

Your personal "Brand" is your name. What do you thank about a word or term as well? I'm still trying to get my head around the term brand. I used the word Arborist first to identify what I'm all about, and then my name Blair Glenn. So my personal brand is just "Arborist Blair Glenn". I guess I'm wondering if I should have used something else?
@RobertoBlake8 жыл бұрын
+arboristBlairGlenn Think of the term brand as "reputation" or what you're known as. Throw back reference, tell me what the "brand" as of "The Dread Pirate Roberts" in Princess Bride? Or think of what the brand or associations we attach to Superman or Batman or Spiderman. In your case remember that most people have no idea what an Arborist is. I had to look it up. So when you introduce yourself, or how I would introduce you in 15 seconds is "This is my friend Blair Glenn, and he probably is the only person in this room actually saving the world. No seriously, he works with plants and trees and ensures that we're living in a stable ecosystem and that we're all safe. He's an Arborist." So use what is called "framing", tell the story rather than throw out a title that means nothing to someone. Tell a story that means something and then attach a title to it.
@arboristBlairGlenn8 жыл бұрын
+Roberto Blake Great reply, thank you. Hope you enjoy watching me "save the world"! I do try.

Any advice for how to create a personal brand from thin air? There are a lot of things I like to focus on but how should I go about narrowing down which route to go with personal branding.
@scurlcube8 жыл бұрын
Nice Vid man, You hinted at this, but I'm wondering about your opinion about completely omitting a personal "brand." I think that a person's body of work acts the branding for their service etc. While interviewing other designers I noticed some had a pretty consistent brand image, but ultimately it did not matter; my sole focus was on the level of consistent work they can push out/room and motivation for improvement. What are you thoughts on "killing" the idea of focusing on personal branding; and pushing for consistent, applicable work examples taking its place?
@RobertoBlake8 жыл бұрын
The work always matter but we are hiring human beings. We tip people who smile and build an affinity with us... We go to the same barber for 10 years... The person always matters. No matter how talented I will never work with a jerk or someone unethical. I will always value the relationship I have with the people I invest time and money on. Consistently producing quality work is part of the story of ones personal brand. But so is whether they are a good listener or empathize with clients. Or take personal responsibility. I would never advocate for killing the idea of a personal brand. Talent is more accessible than ever and the market is saturated. Good people you like and trust and feel you can rely on... That is in short supply and high demand. If somebody said to me they don't believe in personal branding... I'd hope they intended to only ever work with machines 😉 I can tell you personal branding is nothing new or mystical. You can easily tell me the personal brand of Alexander the Great,?Thomas Edison or Martin Luther King. So nope. I would completely but respectfully disagree. 😉 Work matters but people doing the work matter more.😌

+Roberto Blake For sure man. I meant more about young designers spending a lot of time on creating a logo and all these other touchpoints for themselves and not really understand what/why they are doing it. But when it comes to selling ones self, its all about the personality and vibes which are stronger than any logo or stationary they have.
@RobertoBlake8 жыл бұрын
Oh I totally agree with you on that. I think that reading the book "Start With Why" should be required reading for anyone at age 18. In fact my whole Ebook is about intent and self awareness. You can't execute without understanding the point and value proposition. Too many "artists" are too dazzled by the process of making something that looks cool instead of something that shows thoughtfulness and clear intent 😉😌😋

Roberto, can I ask you something? A lot of people keep saying to be "authentic" but what does that mean exactly? Because often I hear words like be "open" and "spontanious" being attached to the term "authentic" which confuses me because isn't being "authentic" supposed to mean that you should just be yourself, you know, be who you are at heart but I'm an introvert by nature. I don't have a spontanious and open personality by default so in my view, being "authentic" should mean that I should embrace who I am and don't try to fake that I'm spontanious because being open and spontanious goes against my nature. Yet being ""authetic" keeps being ascossiated with spontaniousness...Your thoughts on this?
@RobertoBlake8 жыл бұрын
In your case it means being honest about your anxieties and not feeling compelled to fake being energetic

Hey guys, i'm looking to get into cinematography, and was wondering what you guys would recommend to be the best camera that I could get for under £400. I know this might not be much for a camera, and i will most likely upgrade if cinematography is for me. I know that Roberto made a video about this, however I would like to know what you guys personally think. I'll be filming some biking videos (my friends will be using gopros, I was thinking of getting more of a DSLR). Thank you for your time, have a nice day :)
@RobertoBlake8 жыл бұрын
The go pros are more suited to the action and stabilization will be easier with those. Other than that their are not a ton of viable options in that budget due to needing accessories. It would be better to have asked this on the other video since the camera folks would be paying attention.

What should your personal logo say about you? Right now, my professor is encouraging all of us seniors to recreate our logos. He is saying that it should indirectly tell a story etc. Others have said to create something that relates to your talent or specialty. What is your opinion? Do you have a video relating to this?
@RobertoBlake8 жыл бұрын
+James Toikka I have some videos about logo design. Personal logos in theory should be a symbol that relates to you in some way but it doesn't have to be super obvious. Look at how the CW branded the logos for Arrow and Flash or their other TV properties. These are good examples of association rather than direct literal storytelling in a way. I tend to worry less about the logo doing the talking at this point, the association and the overall brand message matters more. People and even a name are starting to matter more. The Google logo/icon is just a G but it is the only G that matters...
@jamestoikka25808 жыл бұрын
Thank you sir! I agree with names and people starting to matter more. This is kinda sorta the reason I am embracing more type based logos.
@RobertoBlake8 жыл бұрын
James Toikka They are coming back. I still think that icons can be good but only if you can make a strong association.
