Oh, I read that here in South America native used to grow a plant called Yucca, and it is used like disinfectant, to wash clothes. And there are another kind of Yucca that were used to extract cyanide to make poison, and is hard to differentiate between them, so usually people die when they collect wild ones.

The stems, leaf bases, flowers, emerging stalks as well as the fruit of most types of yucca are edible, but The stems or trunks of yucca store carbohydrates in chemicals called saponins, which are toxic, not to mention taste of soap. I live in the American southwest and have eaten yucca on many occasions, so I believe you might have mistaken the Yucca for some other plant . Or I may have slowly building up my tolerance to cyanide all these years. hahah!

Well, I live in Venezuela, and Yucca is in our culture, is a very common food here. If you say to a Venezuelan that he does not know yucca, is like say to a Norwegian that they dont know about fish. Well, I just read an wikipedia article about yucca, and it have a complete subtitle about the yucca´s toxicity. Maybe you thing that is not toxic because you cook it before eating it, but there are a kind of yucca, that is normally called "Yuca amarga" (Bitter yucca) that is usually yellow or begie. Actually, it speak about the Venezuela case. Here the article: Potential toxicity Cassava roots, peels and leaves should not be consumed raw because they contain two cyanogenic glucosides, linamarin and lotaustralin. These are decomposed by linamarase, a naturally occurring enzyme in cassava, liberating hydrogen cyanide (HCN).[37] Cassava varieties are often categorized as either sweet or bitter, signifying the absence or presence of toxic levels of cyanogenic glucosides, respectively. The so-called sweet (actually not bitter) cultivars can produce as little as 20 milligrams of cyanide (CN) per kilogram of fresh roots, whereas bitter ones may produce more than 50 times as much (1 g/kg). Cassavas grown during drought are especially high in these toxins.[38][39] A dose of 25 mg of pure cassava cyanogenic glucoside, which contains 2.5 mg of cyanide, is sufficient to kill a rat.[40] Excess cyanide residue from improper preparation is known to cause acute cyanide intoxication, and goiters, and has been linked to ataxia (a neurological disorder affecting the ability to walk, also known as konzo).[9] It has also been linked to tropical calcific pancreatitis in humans, leading to chronic pancreatitis.[41] Symptoms of acute cyanide intoxication appear four or more hours after ingesting raw or poorly processed cassava: vertigo, vomiting, and collapse. In some cases, death may result within one or two hours. It can be treated easily with an injection of thiosulfate (which makes sulfur available for the patient's body to detoxify by converting the poisonous cyanide into thiocyanate).[42] "Chronic, low-level cyanide exposure is associated with the development of goiter and with tropical ataxic neuropathy, a nerve-damaging disorder that renders a person unsteady and uncoordinated. Severe cyanide poisoning, particularly during famines, is associated with outbreaks of a debilitating, irreversible paralytic disorder called konzo and, in some cases, death. The incidence of konzo and tropical ataxic neuropathy can be as high as three percent in some areas."[43][44] During the shortages in Venezuela in the late-2010s, dozens of deaths were reported due to Venezuelans resorting to eating bitter cassava in order to curb starvation.[45][46] Societies that traditionally eat cassava generally understand that some processing (soaking, cooking, fermentation, etc.) is necessary to avoid getting sick.[47] Brief soaking (four hours) of cassava is not sufficient, but soaking for 18-24 hours can remove up to half the level of cyanide. Drying may not be sufficient, either.[48] Cassava root, peeled and soaking For some smaller-rooted, sweet varieties, cooking is sufficient to eliminate all toxicity. The cyanide is carried away in the processing water and the amounts produced in domestic consumption are too small to have environmental impact.[37] The larger-rooted, bitter varieties used for production of flour or starch must be processed to remove the cyanogenic glucosides. The large roots are peeled and then ground into flour, which is then soaked in water, squeezed dry several times, and toasted. The starch grains that float to the surface during the soaking process are also used in cooking.[49] The flour is used throughout South America and the Caribbean. Industrial production of cassava flour, even at the cottage level, may generate enough cyanide and cyanogenic glycosides in the effluents to have a severe environmental impact. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cassava

I have an old family friend who was born and raised in Norway. The woman is in her 80s now, has been an American for 60 years and her accent is still three times as thick as yours is. Has English supplanted your native tongue there?
