5:11 this is an excellent example of experimental archeology (reenacting, living history, bushcraft, ect.) something proven plausible without any archeological evidence. Great stuff, true inspiration!

A video would be cool, what I use are good heavy wool or mohair sleeping socks and a wool knit cap. Even in the summer these are essential items to help prevent heat lose, especially close to a river or lake.

I think it would be wise to recommend the use of sun-dried reindeer skins... the “chemically treated” ones rot too easily and loose the hair...! My blanket, specially in the milder months, is used on the body as a cape... or even just at the waist. I also sleep in it diagonally, as it allows for one more layer of wool... My fire kit is always at the belt with me, and I carry a back-up at my neck (a reproduction from a sample found in Gotland…) Also my walking stick is a essencial item (my favorites come from Ireland and made from a bush called blackthorn). Enjoy your trips...may the two crows give you sound advice in your lives and protection in the woods…!

Later generations called a similar arrangement “tump lines” which were often woven from various fibers, wool, linen, hemp or nettle as examples. Often the frontiersmen and native Americans would roll their sleeping pelts and blankets as you do. One long tumpline would be laid across the bedding before rolling it up, then others would be used to secure the roll. The long one would then be used for carrying the completed roll, called a “budget”. A very old North American word for someone who can’t be still or leave something as it is was “ fussbudget”. Similar solutions from people who were both descended from Northern Europe and those who weren’t but had to solve the same problems!

Hi Ingrid and Heidi, I love your channel! I have a question about your reindeer pelt. About how big would you say it is? I just bought a brain-tanned reindeer pelt here in the united states, and maybe my deer was just huge, or maybe I'm just short (5'7" is average viking height I believe!) but my pelt seems very large compared to yours and comparatively difficult to pack. It comes up to about my shoulders. Also, is there anything you do to wax or oil the skin side of your pelt to help increase its waterproofing? Thanks!

Can you make a video about carrying provisions, food and water for a multiple day hike? Do you use dried travel food like jerky or do you also make food out of fresh products during the hike, and if so, how do you store this conveniently?

Never put furs straight on the ground when you can put linen down first, or an oilskin of oiled linen. Sticks and rocks are sharp.

Great video! I always thought you'd have the leather facing in because it is/was bad for it to get wet. I guess that's wrong then?
@HandsonHistoryAS5 жыл бұрын
Leather facing out is correct. The leather is water resistant, the fur needs to stay dry =)

You shouldn't buy "affordable" if you want to do it like reenactors do. You should buy one that's durable, so you don't have to replace it every year.

Do you know how Nordic peoples traditionally cured animal skins, especially with the hair on? 🦌
@johntheidiot90462 жыл бұрын
The sami way was to just leave it to dry in the sun for a couple of weeks to a couple of months. You can do this today by nailing it shut to a large wall (House, cabin or barn, your pick). You want it to be VERY tight and to stretch the skin. This lets the skin remain it's original size and not shrivel up and shrink. they also have to be fresh when hanging them up, preferably within the week the animal died. My pelts are a couple years old now, and they hold up just fine. Remember to only keep them rolled up while travelling, and hanging when just storing them.
