Excellent information on reindeer pelt. I now know why my pelt keeps on losing hair. I bought it from a shop in Levi. Next time I'm in Finland, I will definitely search for a genuine Sami made pelt. Thank you so much.

This is amazing. I'm always looking for simpler ways to tan because the only videos I ever find involve brain tanning or large amounts of salt and alum that is expensive and complicated. I always knew the Vikings didnt have that stuff but didnt know how to do it the simple way. Tak!

Try walnut hulls, the fresh green ones are the best. Get a barrel or bucket, add water and hulls ( expect to get brown stains in exposed skin and clothes that don’t come out , it’s a dye too!) soak the raw scraped hides in the solution for as long as it takes. This is going to be brown . Shades of brown depending on freshness of hulls, and species of walnut tree. The Confederacy during the American War Between the States famously used Butternut walnut. Black walnut should be darker , I will try it this year.

That's great. I was fortunate nuffto make a deer pelt out of a roadkill last week. Smacked hard enough that the skin unpeeled as it rolled down the embankment. And all I needed was a mcdonalds spork to loosen the fat from the skin. Good thing too cuz my 70' Lesabre doesnt have good heat.

You can waterproof it further if you make fish glue (the swim ladders & the hose of any scaled animal makes a waterproof glue). Seems it's just boiled like regular hide glue. I suppose you could also burn pine sap/pitch & catch the drippings (not flammable or tacky- so it shouldn't burn up if your buried some coals or pick up all kinds of forest litter).

I would like to purchase a reindeer fur hide for camping in cold climate this winter. I understand that it is better to have a dried hide vs.a chemically tanned hide. Can you suggest a vendor either in Europe or the USA? Thanks!

I bought my reindeer pelt from a tourist shop in the north of Sweden about 8 years ago. So far I haven't had a problem with falling hair. However, it has recently started to smell bad. Like dog smell kind of. Does anyone know why that happen and how to get rid of the smell? I have called a local leather specialist and they told me it is possible to wash it in a washing machine (30 degrees, wool cycle, no centrifuge, flat dry) using a special detergent for leather. Is that really possible? Any ideas? I really love my reindeer skin and don't want to throw it away but the smell is getting quite bad. Please help!!!

There are some places in Norway/Sweden where you can get them without having to know a sami, hehe. www.granberggarveri.no/produkt/reinskinn-og-reinshorn/reinskinn-torka-simle This tanner sels them, al though I read on his page that they use a slightly more industrial approach thus we can't guarantee the quality =) We never buy any pels "unseen or untouched". I think you would have to come to Norway and pay the sami a visit. haha

It would be well if I could go there indeed. But, I'm unfortunately disabled (unable to travel). Can I buy a sun dried pelt from you, one that you know is "authentic" produced by the Sami ? Please let me know.

Hi there. I was wondering if you have a contact for the reindeer skin's. I am a stoneage teacher for schools her in the UK. I specialise in Palo and Mesolithic living. I only use materials that would have been around during this time. We don't have raindeer in the uk. I don't like using chemical tanned skin but I have smoked the ones I use. Can you help me out if possible.

So just sun drying it will preserve a pelt like this?

Yes, but it does not work on all pelts. Hang it on a string and leave the legs on for weight/stretch.

Will it work on sheepskins? And if I wanted to try to do it myself (I live in the U.S., so it's harder to find Sami here), what's the exact process? Does it involve soaking the skin in water or using salt to help flesh it, like I've seen other people do? Thanks!
