Hey everyone! Welcome to or welcome back to Sorta Healthy! Your stop for all things personal training.
In this video, I'll be sharing my thoughts and reactions to the ISSA radio commercial that I've been hearing a lot. I'll be giving my take on whether or not the things they say in this commercial are accurate for people who want to become personal trainers. Are the things they are saying true or really far from the truth?
As always, we appreciate your support of the channel. Please remember to like this video and subscribe to the channel as it really does help us to grow and continue putting out content like this, for you.

Hello, I'm in a course but in aprende institute, do you think that certificate is worth something in the USA or am I wasting my time?

Thanks for posting this video, very informative. I'm NPTI certified, been independent from day 1 (of 11yrs). I have my own small studio in Dallas,TX, and have the pleasure of employing another trainer. I too heard this infomercial and called BS. Although $200 an hour would be nice, it's just not realistic for our business. Nothing against group trainers but group training is exhausting, especially for an old trainer.

Here in NYC average independent trainer makes between $85 to $150 an hour. But that's because most of the city is wealthy. Physical therapist/personal trainer hybrids can change $200 here but that's about it.

Personal trainer…daily all I see is..jump on that treadmill, do a 15 min walk “warm up” personal trainer sits on his phone, then it’s the same frickin workout every day whilst the PT sits there..on their phone, not saying this is the case with all PT’s, but seems to be easy money for some, plus they look like crap, with any job you should practice what you preach

If a personal trainer is on his phone, not giving new workouts and not giving any attention to the client, they are not a good trainer.

Yes, I've seen this. So bizzare. I would never do that with a client. I'm involved every single step ( because I love it).. I have never put my client on a treadmill for a warm up( I do my sessions outside under the trees at the park, or in the client's yard:) Excellent trainers are out there. Fortunately, poor trainers can be fired.

I know some self-employed personal trainers who charged personal training packages (# of in-person and virtual sessions) rather than hourly sessions unless it’s one on one.

Would you recommend or is it necessary to take the NCCA test within this certification or is the open book exams enough if you are retaining and trying to grasp the material as much as possible
@SortaHealthyTrainerEducation

Would you recommend NASM or ISSA? I think the difference is 200$ in price. Are there certifications the same and are they both national?
@SortaHealthyTrainerEducation

NASM is likely the better certification in general, and it’s more respected in the US. ISSA isn’t too bad either though.

I have a health fitness specialist degree, but I still need a certification to train clients is complete BS. You would think that a degree would outrank a certification. I'll probably get this cert instead of the Ace because the majority of the Ace material you wouldn't use anyway. It's just how they want you to apply their system.

As a new-ish personal trainer (just did my NASM CPT last year), in my area all the jobs posts I saw were paying $18-30 an hour at most. At the job I have now I make $25-$40/ hr depending on whether it's an individual or small group. I work out with my group classes, but only with light weights or bodyweight to demonstrate the exercises, nothing close to my own workouts. In my individual training I just demonstrate, then watch the client. I do about 15 sessions per week with a couple of additional hours for scheduling/ planning sessions. You have to be aware going in that you may not end up working full time in the beginning, which was fine for me because I'm also a part time professor.

You make a great point that i reiterate a lot to people becoming trainers-most people that are starting out in the profession aren’t working a ton of hours in the beginning.

Yes. You can in Palm Beach. I charge up to 120 but coukd essily chsrge more if it was group of 4, for HIIT. I graduated top of my class, and in an international location so it's very possible to charge 150-200.

The hourly rate is not the only thing to consider. The number of sessions (hours) you’re able to train (bill) each week is critical. Unless you’re a group instructor, acquiring and retaining enough clients to train 6-8 hours a day 5 days a week I would think is very difficult.
@SortaHealthyTrainerEducation

I am certified through ISSA and going back to school to get my exercise science degree. This Ad is Misleading The few ways to make $200 dollars and hour 1. you have to live in an area where people can drop that kind of money and not flinch. 2. Through group training depeneding on how you break down the numbers. But you have to be on your own to do that. Most if not all training jobs that i have seen pays out $15 to $60 an hour. You will not make that money starting out. You can get your Cert in as little as 4 weeks but what did you learn. you only studied to pass the test and that was it. Did you sit down to digest the information. Also All Certification compaines need to add in a onsite apprenticeship as part of the certification. So you can learn what to do in the training sessions itself and apply what was in the book.
