I recently passed the ISSA cpt exam. I've been involved in exercise my entire life. I'm also a nursing school drop out (personal reasons 😓). I've been a Kickboxing instructor for 4 years and have travelled to Thailand on multiple occasions to practice Muay Thai, but I wanted to grow by learning and doing more(in a sense of being able to help more than just myself when in and outside of the gym) I'm also in the midst of ISSA's Strength and conditioning specialization as well as their Sports nutrition specialization. I honestly did not expect to be learning as much as I am from the material provided, and I am glad that I am. I'm not sure if you've personally seen any of the material provided by the ISSA, but I am curious as to how you would chalk it up to material taught in college. Yes I understand that several months of self study may not be equal to 4 years of college, however in different fields(computer science for example) I've seen many people come out with a CS degree and can't do jack, compared to a self taught person who's been extremely invested and hands on be a lot more knowledgeable. Being a kickboxing instructor for 4 years I've had the opportunity to assist and teach varying ages from 10-65+, from varying exercise levels of being consistent to never exercising in their life. With conditions such as asthma, diabetes, scoliosis, vertigo, bad knees, bad backs, etc. I am not insinuating that this is the case, my general question is do you feel that a person dedicated enough to their studies can over time( in my case with the information from ISSA as well as all the hands on experience I've had thus far) be as knowledgeable as someone who's gone to college for Sports Science?

I just started studying for my NASM personal trainer certification this week!! I also have an academic background and graduated with an A.S. in Health, Physical Education, and Recreation this May and I will be going for my B.S. in Kinesiology in the fall. My reasoning is that having this NASM certification will serve to further supplement my developing career in exercise science.

Social media has anyone with a decent (or not) body think they can teach/instruct/coach another person(s) in how to achieve health and fitness goals. Just because you’re 18-25 and youthful with a butt/abs/biceps or do cross fit on the weekends, means you understand what an elderly 50+ client , post pregnancy mom looking to loose weight, teenage athlete, underweight individuals or someone with a wide range of issues, requires... And people need to understand just like a Therapist, Nurse, Doctor or any other profession where people’s lives are in your hands, you need to put in the academic, practical and gain experience before you even try helping others.

Great advice! I love fitness and exercise, I’ve always been athletic. I’ve always thought about working in this industry, getting a certification and just doing it like it’s my business. Because I could do pull-ups and push-ups at the park or because I use kettlebells, resistance bands or a weighted vest. Who the hell do I think I am? But now I’m really second guessing it, I almost feel like I’d be a second rate trainer or an intruder in your line of work. You, on the other hand, have specific and extensive training and experience and it’s not right for people like me to think I can do what you do or to think I should even be in your field. I’ve got some real thinking to do, Thanks for the wake up call!

These 'quick fix' PT courses do a great disservice to the industry as a whole. When I took my Personal Training/Nutrition Diploma with YMCAFit (UK), it took 18 months in total. Many of these 'quick' courses don't even require you to do your practicals face-to-face; you can simply make a video of yourself and a 'client' in a gym and then upload it for assessment .

ACSM is a good cert. I totally forgot to mention that but I personally don't care for it and that's why I forgot about it. ACSM is based more on 'clinical' and 'medical' literature conducted by physiologists, therapists, and doctors. I was taught that ACSM was for the 'hospital' track and NSCA was for the 'sports' track. Yes it is based on science ALOT but that doesn't allow room for anomalies or looking to reshape the wheel to make it roll better. If someone came to me with an ACSM certification and asked me for a job, I would show interest in them. I hope this helps. - Coach Brian

Thank you for sharing, I actually just got my cpt, nutrition, and group training certifications from ISSA. I am looking to get NCCPT by January, but since this is a fairly new area for me, I feel like I am lacking some information. I started my weight loss journey 5+ years ago, and right when I thought about giving up, I began to shed weight like it was no one's business. This weight loss inspired me to share with friends and family on how I achieved my goals. I want to eventually start my own business/gym but with this industry being so overwhelming, I do not know where to start. I thought about taking up a part time job at my local gym, to get more hands on experience, but it seems like they require a lot of experience-- which personally I do not have (besides my own). My question for you, what additional literature do you recommend, videos, podcasts, etc... To better prepare yourself in this industry?

What do you think about the ISSA certification
@optimaxperformancetraining8285
@optimaxperformancetraining8285 7 жыл бұрын
Hey Johndel, Coach Brian here. ISSA does not compare to NSCA, NASM, ACSM, ACE. ISSA is not nationally recognized and will not hold weight by itself. It's a 100% online course that concludes with an open book, untimed final exam... I wouldn't waste my time with ISSA. Save your time and money on ISSA and invest in one that suits your needs and meets your goals. I hope this helps! -Coach Brian

Optimax Performance Training brian check your facts about issa. It is in fact nationally accredited by the DETC..which is the distance education and training council. The DETC is also recognized by the US government and council of higher education and accreditation. So much for not being recognized. It is one of the few that requires program design written out and thought out. Anyone and their mother can read a ncca cpt and pass an exam. They dont require any program design skills..read a book and answer 120 questions and your certified. Issa challenges you far more than that and has been in fact accepted since 2015 in lieu of the cscs for college athletics training. It's a shame you discredit the issa due to the online portion. Have you taken any of their exams ? I work alongside so called cscs trainers and ouch.. scary

...until you get sued by someone who got injured because you didn't know what you were doing after you mislead them about your qualifications. Hope you have a big enough insurance policy and a waiver that's bulletproof. But I can tell you as a lawyer (in addition to being a coach), if you overstate your level of knowledge (even by implication) and lack sufficient background in safe training methods, I'll find a way around it. I'm not saying that's you. I have no idea what your level of knowledge is and assume you know your way around a gym. One certainly doesn't need a college degree to know what they're doing. But some solid formal training can, if nothing else, fill in gaps that are inevitable. And if you are following what you have been trained to do, it will help shield you when things go wrong. The point is that for a large number of reasons, not the least of which is liability, this is not a space for amateurs to play. A big part of what you call financial responsibility is understanding and managing risk, especially those that could be catastrophic to your business and your financial future. That sometimes requires a little caution and deliberate action.

Hello, I've lost over 55 lbs through Shaun T's cardio programs from Beach body. Do you recommend a CPT program that specializes in cardio training?
@Criticalbench
@Criticalbench 4 жыл бұрын
That would depend on what you wanted the focus of your training to be. What I mean is if you wanted to specifically train athletes whose cardio performance is key to their sport, like triathletes, than a program that spends a lot of time focussing on specific training styles to work with those types of athletes would probably be a benefit for you. However, my personal opinion is that having a solid understanding of strength training is paramount in working with any and all athletes as well as people who come to you for the improvement of their health and fitness.

Yeah because you actually have to have at least 60 credits, around 2 years of education, and a bunch of prereq courses. However, you have to pay so much fee in the beginning just to take the CSEP-CPT.

Hey Coach Brian, Two questions do you do online or personal consultations I have been battling what I believe to be muscle/function issue causing back issues? Second question, I have been debating a career change and probably would go back to school for functional training do you recommend any certification as say an entry level to help a beginner in the field to see if it is something I might enjoy?

Coach Brian here, thanks for the comment. I do online coaching but it really is quite difficult when dealing with known muscular issues. I need to see movement as it happens rather than through the screen/videos. Take a look into Functional Movement Systems and start learning from that. I also recommend taking a look at NCSA-CPT and see what you think about that. Almost everything is entry level but to separate from the rest, you need to get to that advanced level. Let me know if there's anything you need. Thanks!!

So I've noticed every question in regard to NCSF has been ignored (intentionally?). Student loan debt and years (wasted) of formal education wasn't worth realizing your clients are getting snagged by CPTs, I guess.
@Criticalbench

No questions are being ignored intentionally. We field hundreds of comments daily and do our absolute best to get to them all. With respect to NCSF or any other accredited organization we have always maintained that depending on what specifics a person wants in their training and education as well as other factors like the time they can commit to their studies and financial means, they need to choose the course/ program that best fits their needs and their current lifestyle.

Hey Coach Brian, not sure if you are still responding to this thread but I need your guidance. I'm a CSCS and am interested in earning the CISSN cred, I've bought the essentials book by Jose Antonio, other than this what else can I do to be fully prepared. I have a 6-7 month timeline and am from an anatomy and physical education background with little to no experience in biochemistry.

What do you think about the100% online and self-paced NASM Certified Personal Trainer and Exam Preparation program (Voucher Included) with Northshore Technical Community College? Is this a good way to become a Personal Trainer?
@Criticalbench
@Criticalbench 6 жыл бұрын
NASM is decent but it falls way short of actual in-person certifications. It's too easy to pass those tests and that poses a problem because a lot of people who say they are certified by these online only agencies really don't know enough to train anyone. The best way to become a trainer is to go to school for this and then intern under someone who has a degree in the field. -Coach Brian

CSCS actually is a personal training certification, also. In fact it was the first one in the industry. It just is not confined to just the average person. It mainly is designed for training athletes (in a team setting or individually), but is also fit for training average people. It does not fully cover all of the issues you will encounter with the general population which their NSCA-CPT is designed to do.

David Jerome CSCS can be used as a personal trainer cert but the CPT can't be used to train athletes. CSCS is (was) the gold standard of certifications.

@Criticalbench

Hi Valeria, the best way to move forward is to not sit idle and wait for things to come to you. Write down exactly what you want to do and then research the heck out of that. You will find things that turn you off and others that excite you. Go after the things that excite you and then research some more. It won't happen overnight nor will it just randomly appear. Continue to do what you love and success will come. 🙂

As a seasoned fitness professional of 35 years, I've grown to despise all of the fitness certs. In 93, I got ACSM, because that was the gold standard, but over the years, the name of that cert has changed 6 times, and there is no clear reason why other than money. We pay for the CEU's to keep the certification current, and then we have to pay the cert agency each 2 to 4-year period on top of the classes for the CEU's. I just had Plus One tell me that I should get ACSM's personal training cert. WTF and on top of all that, I've got my MS from Springfield College. I appreciate your enthusiasm and knowledge, but this is all a racket. I would bet people at a bar bought drinks for the powers to be of companies and told them to require their cert, and of course, there is no clear proof of studies testing fitness professional's knowledge to guarantee that any specific cert has more knowledgable people. I also sometimes wonder whether companies are advertising jobs that do not exist but require certs, to promote that cert. I did use my health and fitness knowledge to stop my mother with mild dementia from forgetting me and I'm almost finished with my graphic memoir about it.

Hey I was planning to do NASM cerification in India but before that I wanted to know that Is it better to do a certification in which you can get the hands-on experience like practicals also along with the theory. If yes, then which one will be the best to do? And if No, then Is Getting certified by NASM good enough to become a personal trainer and to pursue my career in Fitness. Also i would like to know that after doing the certification, what is the future scope. How can a person grow even more apart from becoming a trainer in the gym. Should i be doing masters in SnC? Please help

Brian, I respect your academic pursuits and successes. In an ideal world, it they have the means, I do feel that all aspiring and current trainers *should* never stop educating themselves. I definitely think that you have every right to be upset that you had to compete with individuals who didn't put in the sweat equity and years of schooling like you did. I actually *am* looking into switching my major; I have been in Business Administration, part-time, for about 2 years and I have realized that I was in the program for the wrong reasons. I want to switch to kinesiology or something related. I have a passion towards strength sports and getting a barbell into the hands of men, women, children, regardless of socioeconomic status, gender expression, identity, etc. I'd want a certification that heavily leans towards strength sports; NSCA would be ideal, but I do not have my bachelor's. I struggled somewhat with this video only because I felt that it was a bit biased---I didn't really walk away from watching this, feeling like I got a decent, deep-dive explanation as to why I should consider other PT certifications. You made a brief comment on ACE, NASM, and one other reputable/well-known cert, but I could tell that viewers were pushed to still get their degree. I've seen a few comments echoing this question ---any thoughts on the NCSF? I am looking into the personal training/strength & conditioning package that they offer. I'd like to couple this with a degree (eventually). Thank you!

Agreed. I did Cooper cus that's what my dad did, but it required an in person workshop back then whereas mine was online only. Now these NASM trainers get all the jobs, and honestly I'm not impressed with the technique they let their clients slide with, sometimes even dangerous form. I've learned honestly a lot from watching KZbin (but professionals, not random fitspo people), but where I live it doesnt seem people value that level of service. It seems dominated by people who talk a good game but don't necessarily understand what they're doing.
