Crazy stuff, Jake! This one was tough because it was a "logic" problem vs a bad module going nuts. At least Mercedes provides CAN splices so you can fairly efficiently divide the dozens of modules of the networks...Now you can get some sleep haha

This is why I don't own a German vehicle. Overengineered to the max with both mechanical and electronics. Jake, both you and Ivan seem to be the ones that find the problem in these vehicles, albeit with extended diagnostic time that's not your fault! Thank you for this video. You need a vacation after this one.

Thanks for your honesty Jake. It's so easy during editing to make it look like we've got it all sorted and due to our amazingness, were able to sort it out in no time at all. I'm currently working on a Ford Focus no start that I thought I would have sorted fairly quickly and just like you, needed a brain space to rethink my process. (video will be out later). I have been following you for a while now and really like your thinking process. Thanks for keeping it real! MiracleMAX

That was a fun one! And I bet the next time it tells you the hatch is open, you'll go there first. All part of the fun of learning and figuring it out. I wasn't aware in the first part the interior was staying on when I commented about the hatch being the issue.

A guy can't go chasing every problem on the vehicle in hopes that it's causing "your" issue.... like the air compressor running non-stop. But it might have been worthwhile when you first noticed the tailgate notification flickering to unplug that module and see if it changed anything. Easy to say in hindsight. That was a rough one.

Great job. These will make you rethink your career choices for sure. The fact that there was a light for rear door kinda made me think that you would find an issue there. Kinda hind sight but I tend to focus on any existing things that are not 100% functioning correctly. With nothing found visual I would prob ignore it and run the gambit you did. Definitely drives you crazy chasing phantom issues. One again great find.

wow that’s was a cracking issue . have to say top job mate . that’s why me and you don’t have much hair left jobs like that have you pulling it out 😂😂😂😂 particularly as merc and sam issues are very common and it’s easy to get wrapped up in the wrong direction. essentially with those crappy little bus bars . it’s funny because seeing this reminds me of a fair few years ago very similar issue . don’t remember it being a battery drain but the fault ended up being the tail gate latch had not been learnt . and when we asked the customer had it been changed after countless hours of hair pulling he said oh yes it had and funny enough it’s when the problem stared 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. have to admit that one beat me had to reach out to a buddy of mine that worked for a merc dealer and he put me on the right track 🤪🤪

I think you got short changed when they didn't give you the full history of the problem. The rear power latch was drawing 5 amps because it didn't know it was closed & the relay was clicking because of a self resetting circuit breaker?

The 5amps is just all the modules awake.

That was a hell of a hunt for a weird problem, Jake! Despite the pitfalls, you made a great diagnostic! I think Ivan struggled with a similar problem in a completely different car, where the relearn procedure is what tells the computer when the lift gate is latched or not. Not very user friendly human interface - it could set a fault for "trunk not latched", or something.

@@autodiagyt That and the got-dang Telematics keeping modules awake. Had a waiter customer recently with a repeat dead battery, a low-use vehicle, had a software update that addressed charging system logic, but couldn't get the car to go to sleep, long story short, went into the waiting area, had the customer disable all the apps on his Smarty phone that were installed on the car, BINGO! So this was caused by a botched repair. You can't just swap parts at these kind of systems. Need to do everything 'by the book' and re-learn if specified. IMHO, there are a couple of design flaws here. At first, the entertainment system should not light up like that, every time the CAN wakes up. It should listen in stand-by and only fully power-up when it is appropriate to do so. And this system should re-learn its lock automatically when replaced, as it probably automatically adjusts for increasing play in aging mechanical parts and door rubbers. Also, the system should throw an error, instead of endlessly trying to reach a steady state.

Does the Service Info tell you to Relearn the door latch after replacement? 16 hours, according to ScannerDanner we ought to be paid to learn how to fix a car that we don't know how to fix. We came to this car with a rear gate warning MSG and knowing that the owner changed the part. Now in the end we should have gone straight to the rear gate switch SYSTEM and looked at the SI to see what it states. In your mind you were thinking that you would end up back there sooner or later and actually second-guessed yourself, a problem a lot of us have even with the issue staring us in the face, I hope you did not charge more than a few hours brother. Thank you for showing several STAR Connector locations and your theory at the end of the video. I don't trust schematics to show exact wiring for CAN, all these modules are on their own line except the OCM and I cannot say that unplugging one will kill several others simply based on missing data packets???? I lived in Japan for 20 years and a few diagnostics are the Makers' way to point you to a special problem based on the feedback of flashing lights or other hidden telltale signs, maybe this is MB secret Dealer logic. Another problem I personally have with KZbinrs is they have a theory, fix the car, but don't rerun the same tests on the video to MAYBE prove their point. After the relearn, if you pull the OCM, KeyGO, or RearSAM, does this also still kill a half dozen modules based on missing packets? Love your stuff. After 16 hours I will put in another one for my own learning/retesting for free. Maybe now you will not throw STAR Connectors back just anywhere LOL.
@autodiagyt
@autodiagyt 9 ай бұрын
I’m not sure I follow you on what you mean by retesting unplugging one module and half a dozen things go offline. My theory was that modules was communicating together that hey the rear gate isn’t fully latched and by interrupting that back and forth communication it allowed everyone to go to sleep. It’s not something I could reproduce once the latch was learned. Also no the procedure for the rear end door latch(they call it a lock) it does not say to relearn it but the tsb that I found I think did say to perform a relearn.
@autodiagyt
@autodiagyt 9 ай бұрын
Actually not the tsb does not say perform a relearn it says to do a function test. I had to go back a find it. The tsb also doesn’t really fit the issue I had but there was a campaign to update the rear Sam for a battery drain issue related to the latch that I just found doing a different key word search.
