A simply beautifully written & preformed song ... I am a bit of an old fart but this song gets to me. Every time I travel though Tenterfield I look out for the Saddler's shop ..makes one think.

It's been decades since I last listened to this song. But, about a year ago it appeared in my feed after searching for "Don't Cry Out Loud". Although I understood the connection between both songs & artist, I didn't understand why it was in my feed until I listened to it all these years later. I needed to cry! It's just that simple. The lyrics tell a sad but beautiful story accompanied by a beautiful melody. Peter Allen knew just how to capture & hold your attention. Thank you, Peter.

At the time he was active I didn’t pay too much notice but after living in the New England area twice over 2 decades and visiting Tenterfield I lament that I never went to see him. A legend in the true sense of the word that I hope won’t slip through the cracks of musical and cultural history.

A GREAT thing just happened to me as I listened to this recording.........it is the ABSOLUTE PERFECT version that I listened to as a teenager in the 1970s.....listening to this concert which must have been broadcast for Australian listeners.....I have not been able to figure out which concert I may have listened to at that time, on that day. As all typical people back then, I had a cassette tape recorder with the old ribbon tapes. I recorded each song as it was played, including ALL the conversation, jokes and patter that Peter Allen gleamingly gave so generously to his audience. I listened to that tape for a thousand times. His patter was unbelievable. So open, humorous and innocently, blatantly, radiantly bold. I could just imagine him as a boy, he would have been the same. So I guess that as an adult he kept his inner child visible for all of us to love. I know that he received terrible discrimination as a young boy for his difference and his unique talents and style. I can only feel so proud that the world came to honour his unique differences and what he shared with us for such a short time. We must respect difference because it's the difference that makes the special and the unique, the bold and the amazing.

I was 13 and my brother and sister worked at the regent theatre Sydney . I went 4 times to see him and each time it was emotional and a thrill . He was a fantastic entertainer. My biggest memory as I sat and wait for my brother and sister ,I’d see him head out long after the crowd had gone. He had a bandanna on his head and I remember having goose bumps but to shy to ask for an autograph , the world lost and incredible human being . I also got to see Liza as well and so man6 more entertainers. I was a lucky young girl , love you Peter ❤

His song was so sad and so beautiful. I was lucky enough to see him twice. Radio City Music Hall, where he gave the high kicking Rockettes a run for their money. Also at Carnegie Hall. After that concert my girlfriend and I went to the Russian Tea Room. Peter was there and I went over and shook his hand. I simply said, “Thank you. Thank you so much.” He smiled at me and said, “That's so kind of you to say that. I hope you enjoyed the show”. I said it was even better than when you danced with the Rockettes. He really laughed and said, “I really gave them some competition.” I replied, “You were so far ahead of them it wasn't even funny.” He laughed again and said, “I really appreciate your stopping by.” I said “I will remember this as long as I live.” He smiled. I smiled. And though it's been 40+ years since then, I remember every word and feeling.

The late George woolnough Worked on High Street And lived on Manners 52 years he sat on his veranda And made his saddles And if you had questions About sheep or flowers or dogs You just ask the saddler He lived without sin They're building a library for him. Time is a traveller Tenterfield saddler turn your head Ride again Jackaroo Think I see kangaroo up ahead The son of George woolnough Went off and got married And had a war baby But something was wrong And it's easier to drink then go crazy And if there were questions about why The end was so sad Well George had no answers about why a son Ever has need of a gun. Time is a traveller Tenterfield saddler turn your head Ride again Jackaroo Think i see kangaroo up ahead The grandson of George Has been all around the world And lives no special place Changed his last name And he married a girl with an interesting face He'd almost forgotten them both Because in this life that he leads There's nowhere for George And his library Or the son with his gun To belong … except in this song.
