Two weeks ago I did a set. Was beating the wedge bolts out on passager side and the king pin fell out on the drivers side. Ive had decent luck with king pins coming out. Mostly due to being worn and having my customers soak em for a week in pb or liquid wrench.

I worked on a fleet of Freightliner COE. They replaced the fleet THEN, we started getting premature kingpin fail. We were replacing WAY too many kingpins. Soon, the replacemnts too were failing. Thr boss talked to engineers, the factory you name it. Finally the boss had us change out lube technique. We thought he was crazy, but, we did as we were told. 1- with the tires on the ground, lube the top zerks. 2 jack up the front axle & lube the bottom zerks. It worked! The kingpins began to go the distance w/o fail. The trick was to take the weight off the bottom of the pins so grease could get in. WHO'DA THOUGHT? !

@@firstname6208 I’ve seen both nuts on the same side a few times before. It depends on the axle.
@firstname62082 жыл бұрын
Really it depends on who showed up to work the day that axel went down the line. When you hit the brakes the spindle tries to rotate, for that reason The nut should be in front on top and behind on the bottom.
@michaelmccaffrey27312 жыл бұрын
I was taught to grease with the same method back in the eighties. Also when the front end is up a guy can check wheel bearing play, king pin play, check tires and easily turn steering to get access to other grease fittings

I didn't see anything regarding shimming the thrust bearings, for me that is the most difficult part.
@firstname62082 жыл бұрын
After new bushings installed and honed to fit, hang the bare spindle on the axel, slide the prepacked thrust bearing in place. Install the kingpin from the bottom up, thru the bearing and to the top of the axel, lift the spindle with your knee or small bottle jack, slide as many shims in as possible, mixing and matching to remove as much play as possible. Center the shims and using a no mar hammer gently tap the kingpin into place and install locks.

@@YourMom-ro1ig With king pins that worn, that means its highly likely other steering components are worn and although not explained, that's a new tie rod assembly installed and no doubt for good reason. So not sure where the blame for "messed up" comes in, its more whoever owned/serviced that truck was severely lacking in checking out the steering/suspension system as that slop in the king pins should have been caught WAY before this point. How that ever passed a yearly inspection is beyond me and probably means the truck was not being inspected is my guess or passed by some scammer of a business as those places do indeed exist.
