*A NOTE ON THE TESTING* I might try and include an explanation in future videos but when testing drivers and comparing the averages I take out the longest drive and the shortest and any really poor shots caused by my terrible swing. In this test I also took out any really fast or slow swing speeds to make it fair, I hit 10/15 shots with each driver..I was shattered 😂

Peter, just had to drop you a line and thank you MUCH for comparing old-school drivers with new drivers; in particular, The Sim 2 vs. The M1. After watching your vid, I found one in a pawn shop that sold for $100 (USD) which is an amazing price considering you can't touch one for under $200 on eBay. I took that driver to my round today & did REALLY well with it. I quickly realized that this is the type of driver that NEVER gets old. So again...THANK YOU for taking the time to put these sticks to the test. I watch you & Rick frequently, even the older vids. Keep 'em comin.'
@ianfinnemore48003 жыл бұрын
Given that drivers over the past 5yrs have pretty much maxed out on distance, it would be good if you could redo the test, but measure dispersion instead....has forgiveness improved over this period?
@johnp81313 жыл бұрын
Sounds a better idea?
@DallasIPAttorney3 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same thing. With limitations on driver faces, etc. likely limiting distance perhaps the improvement in the new clubs is forgiveness and this might not show up as clearly with a pro doing the hitting. Given that the center of my driver's face is virtually unmarked, I'll volunteer to do the testing for forgiveness.
@huskynu133 жыл бұрын
that was my takeaway on the SIM2/M1 matchup - hitting toe shots, not losing distance, and it seemed like based on the shot track they stayed on the fairway with the M1

For some golfers adjustability in a driver is paramount. I use a Callaway Big Bertha 816 Alpha DBD driver and fairways. Their adjustability lets me dial them in and hit straight shots without any manipulation of my swing. The driver has 5 weight positions: toe high or low, heel high or low, & weight removed. There are also hosel adjustments. Callaway is the only hosel adjustable driver that doesn't require turning the shaft to change positions. I can control direction of the fairways by whether I put the heavier weight towards the face or back as well as changing the total of the 2 weights to change swingweight. The 5 wood tends to be too draw or fade oriented with the 3 and 10 gram weights. (I replaced the 16 with a 10). I am switching to 8 and 6 grams to minimize the draw and fade tendencies, but still have a slight adjustability in direction. No matter which weight is forward, both settings will be closer to straight shots. I am doing the same to the 3 wood. The fairway hosels are also both adjusted to be upright. That should be the last adjustment needed. I agree on the TaylorMade M1 - lots of adjustability.

@azharcassim27953 жыл бұрын
To be fair I don't think any type of club can offer the forgiveness needed from poorly struck shots hit by many amateurs. You see it on the golf course week in week out. Guys with the latest and greatest equipment unable to hit fairways consistently due to poor swing technique. In my view, amateurs will benefit most from managing expectations on the course and hitting shots accordingly. Most time this would mean hitting fewer drivers off the tee. Improving their skill level through practice would greatly benefit them and would certainly be a better investment for their money much more than the latest equipment could ever provide. Taking this to the extreme, check out Rick Shiels' video where a PRO golfer uses a 70pound package set and still scores under par. We cannot buy a golf game! Practice, hard work, discipline, dedication and course management will lower our scores, not the bullshit marketing thrown at us from these major brands every year. The idea of forgiveness is really a major marketing ploy used to benefit the pockets of these major brands. They are only incremental changes with unjustifiable price increases year on year. If you can swing a club well you will likely play good golf with even low forgiveness clubs. Distance is not everything, especially if one doesn't have the wedge game to match it!

I've been playing the GBB Epic 2017 since release. For me, it's forgiving and I'm the longest person I play with. Average 285 metres. 8 handicap. Tested other drivers every year, and don't feel the need to change.

I have tested drivers at demo days in the past on launch monitors. I also tested at my local golf shop with my driver while taking lessons and tweaking every option including my swing and every detail. I understand I’m not a tour level pro or scratch golfer and the variables I bring to the table are real life just like when we play golf. Wind, temp, ball manufacturer I’m using when playing compared to range balls at demo days and how my body feels that day plus hitting balls on a range compared to while playing is a lot different. All that being said I always stick with my M2 I purchased used about 3 years ago. $180 driver and I hang with most of the guys in my old golf league. Some younger guys hit it farther but that’s not really the metric I go by. I want consistency and predictably while hitting my diver. Are there days that I suck at hitting it? Yep! I have a Taylormade HL 3 wood as my backup when things are not working off the tee and that high launch helps me save my round. Plus it’s a great 3 wood off the deck and it was also used. I’m sold on used equipment.

Thanks Peter. I'm in the process of upgrading from an R5xl to and M6. I'm really looking forward to seeing the gains.

Very good reviews, I currently still bag my M1 but had a fitting on TSI3 and found my dispersion was much tighter. I'd love to see a review on the Sub 70 driver. Nice work, thanks for the info.

I’m currently gaming the Ping G425 LST. I really wish you would have added ping to the mix with this test. I think the original G400 was rather ground breaking as the first time in the 460 degree era, we had a stable forgiving smaller club head.

im still playing the g25, I still love the consistency of it!

Got fitted for a TSi3 driver recently , nice big 75g extra stiff shaft 9 degrees loft...After using a 12-year old driver I can definitely notice the difference - I was hitting it dead straight and a long long way, felt amazing. Technology has come a long way since my last set of clubs, but I don't think you notice the difference as much over just 5 years. I sometimes wonder if practicing with an older driver that requires more proprioceptive and grip slip neurological feedback is advantageous towards using a newer more forgiving club as it improves your senses more, whereas if something is too easy to hit your senses full because they're not receiving enough stimulus to trigger a reaction @Peter Finch Golf

This is why I used Golfbidder for my TS3 knew my specs and basically saved a load of cash! Also got money for my old driver too class set up.

I use a PING G410, I really like it. I don't like how a lot of companies are getting away from the adjustable clubs. I want my club to grow with me, if I need to move a weight to the draw bias early on, but then get better I don't want to have to buy a new club just because my swing got better. Which is why I went with the 410 Max and adjust to Draw rather than the SFT. I want to adjust the weight back to neutral if I get better.

My newest driver is the titleist 910D3. Yes , don’t be shocked. Until lockdown Id been rocking the Nike machspeed SQ driver. A frying pan that made a huge noise but flew nowhere. I just can’t afford anything else. Looking to get to single digits this year. Just need to cut out a couple of blow up holes.

Currently playing Titleist TS1 driver - brilliant club. 20 yards longer for me than anything else I tested including the newer clubs.

Awesome video. Would have been do to see the dispersion patterns to get an idea of which is more forgiving.

I am currently using the TS3 and its the best driver i've ever had, I agree with you on the looks in comparison to the TSi3 , but only for the bottom part , I much more prefer the little arrow alignment on the crown vs the lettered alignment on the TSi3 .. Will be keeping in the bag for a long time for sure

Great video Peter. I have the Callaway Rogue, and based on this video, won't be planning a change anytime soon, at least if distance is what I'm concerned about.

Still playing a Ping G30 from '13 or '14. It's been a great driver for me, but it's time to upgrade. The G425 Max or SFT would look great in my bag. I'd make that my next purchase, but I need a new putter even more desperately! Keep up the great work, Pete. And despite what some have said, I love watching you shop online ;)
