I am sure you know - an aft CG is very dangerous. Being a little nose heavy is much safer than being a little tail heavy. I hope that the the high thrust line has not fooled you into thinking that the nose is too heavy. I think you would also benefit from lowering the front of the engine mount structure so that the thrust line comes closer to the CG - ideally, the thrust line should pass through the CG. Hard to do with a top mounted pusher but you could come closer - and that would reduce the amount of nose down pitch-over under power. Should something go wrong requiring you to use your BRS, I would be very concerned that you would be able to find that handle behind your head during the chaos of an emergency. Your life would literally depend upon finding that handle. I would recommend getting an extension and put that handle either beside you or in front of you. 12:33 Lastly, please remember to pull the pin (that red tag that says "remove before flight") on the BRS handle before flight. It is easier to remember to do this if it is within your view when seated, and it definitely should be on your checklist. You do have a checklist, right?
@mechanicalamateur16645 жыл бұрын
XD "Right?"
@FurryKeidran985 жыл бұрын
I'm curious here, why would you want nose heavy over tail heavy? Is it because in the event you weren't paying attention the plane would stall if it was tail heavy?
@HarmanRobotics5 жыл бұрын
@@FurryKeidran98 If the nose is a little heavy then you have to put more back pressure on the stick (or trim it out) to remain in level flight but the aircraft is very stable. If tail heavy the pitch control will be very twitchy and you risk stalling - and with an aft CG you may not be able to recover from the stall.
@Justplanecrazy255 жыл бұрын
@@HarmanRobotics Especially considering he has a T-tail configuration too. He could get into a deep stall configuration. An AFT CG wouldn't help him any in that scenario. Doubtful he could get into one of those states though. Thankfully that engine is providing a stable thrust component too, so even if it were possible, hopefully the moment would be strong enough to get him out. Looking at it more, I seriously doubt a deep stall is possible. The thrust line looks to be nearly parallel to the elevator/horizontal stabilizer. Good note about BRS too! I didn't even notice the pin.

ProFlare ak I think for him it’s a lot of the engineering that is interesting. He doesn’t care how high or fast he flies as long as he can get the satisfaction that the machine, he built with his own hands, can fly. If he were interested in buying a plane he would do that, he’s interested in building and coming up with his own designs and seeing if they work. On top of that, it’s not very entertaining to watch a dude just fly a plane but when it’s home built, it’s different.

AMAZING!! I've been watching since day one of the first build, so it's really exciting to see this come to fruition! Also, pardon my ignorance, but would adding VGs and possibly winglets help with the underpower/prop pitch issue by increasing wing efficiency/reducing stall speed?
@ayopiop23925 жыл бұрын
Adding winglets should help efficiency. I’m not sure if it would reduce the stall speed tho.

@Ragnarok03125 жыл бұрын

@HarmanRobotics5 жыл бұрын
Correct, and the thrust line should be angled downwards more - easy to accomplish by shortening the front support structure.
@loganreuter60725 жыл бұрын
I remember a few videos back he was saying that the Center or pressure was just slightly below the motor so it would only cause a slight downwards force. That’s why he has the t-tail configuration.

Peter, as you are likely aware, the high thrust line will generate a significant pitch-down moment, making the elevator feel nose heavy requiring constant back pressure on the stick to maintain level flight and creating additional drag and slowing you down. Rather than relying on the "guess and by golly" method, I strongly suggest you calculate the c.g using scales and a tape measure, (reference datum, weight x arm = moment). Depending on your chosen wing section, as a rule of thumb, c.g is generally at 25% - 30% wing section chord. A thick section such as a Clark Y, as your wing appears, results in a larger pitch-down moment as well (Refer to "Theory of Wing Sections by Abbot & Doenhof - Amazon~$17). A simple method to determine whether these factors are correct is to reduce power to idle, then check the feel. Ideally, properly rigged and a correct c.g, it should fly hands off in a glide (positive static stability). Also very important is positive dynamic stability. (Return to level stabilized flight with few or no oscillations following a pitch disturbance). A lower thrust line (at or below the lateral axis) will add a pitch up moment as power is added, but not easily accomplished with the low ground clearance and configuration of your plane. Relative wing - stabilizer incidence is also an important factor. Believe me, as an Aeronautical Engineer, aircraft design using the "T.L.A.R." (That Looks About Right) method is playing with fire. Good to see you took some safety precautions - seat belt/ harness, and helmet, and parachute. Thankfully, you were not injured - or worse. Would be tragic for someone with your talent. God luck with your future endeavors, and stay safe.

@kutsy37854 жыл бұрын
@ That is simply factually not true and you know it
@kutsy37854 жыл бұрын
@ thats actually not true if we're talking critical parts and not. If a critical part breaks, say a wing on a plane, youre more likely to die than if a critical part of your car breaks, say a wheel or brakes. If non critical part breaks, say engine in an airplane, yes you can float but you dont have much contron on the landing spot and still have high chance of dying if your landing is not performed well. When your car engine breaks, you can literally coast to a stop with less risk of dying.
