Blanket flowers are bold, native daisies that bloom in a mixture of hot colors including scarlet red, burnt orange to golden yellow. Along with being a great deer-resistant perennial, Gaillardia are also fantastic pollinator-attracting plants for sunny spots in the garden! Watch this video with Noelle, Horticulturist, and Education Director with Petitti Garden Centers, to learn more about the benefits of growing Gaillardia in your garden. They prefer to grow in full sun environments, and they are great plants for rock gardens. As with most perennials, we recommend fertilizing with ‪@EspomaOrganic‬ Plant-tone® and Iron-tone® to provide nutrients for those showy blooms. For a pop of red, try varieties such as 'Arizona Red Shades' or 'Spintop™ Red Starburst'. If you prefer yellow, try 'Mesa Yellow' or 'Arizona Sun'.

I love Gaillardias and have about 5 different varieties. I love them so much that I grew 3 other annual varieties from seed and am anxiously waiting to see what they look like when they bloom! Thanks for showcasing them Noelle (not Nicole ;))!

I live in Ohio and I planted 2 “Mesa Bicolor” blanket flowers, and I love them. Their soil should be well draining considering this past July we had a day where we got a quick 2+ inches of rain, and no puddles whatsoever!

Hi, Thank you. :) Was looking for some deer resistant + drought resistant flowers, came across these seeds. I go away in the summer (1 month) and have lots of deer around. :) These would probably work. Bless Love daisies...

I have read that Gallardia pulchella is an annual, sometimes living two years like Rudbeckia hirta.

Great vid! Full of useful info. My Blanket flowers took a bad turn when we had excessive rain all July (N. Florida zone 9A). Not sure they'll make it but if they do I'll amend the soil w perlite next year.

hi, are Arizona Sun's perennial or bi-annual? I have seen both published. I just bought a tray of 70 seedlings for a mass planting and would like to know what to expect. Thank you.

Blanket Flowers are hardy to Zone 3, -40 degrees F, but that's when their root system is insulated by soil in the ground. Also, they require excellent drainage and cannot tolerate wet feet. So, with most perennials that you would like to winter over in pots you have 3 options after the plants have yellowed and died back in late fall: 1. Bring them into a cold garage or garden shed and water them lightly 1x per month over winter 2. Bring the pots to a protected side of your home, mulch around their pots to provide extra insulation 3. Dig a hole in the landscape, garden or holding area, and sink the pots in the ground for the winter Keep in mind, every 2-3 years, you will want to divide your perennials and replant/repot the divisions because the root system will take up all the insulating soil space in the pot and will no longer be protected from the cold.

@@PetittiGardenCenters Do you have to divide perennials in the ground to help the insulation process or just so in pots?

Something is eating the petals on my gallardia. I have red, yellow and yellow/red…….They don’t touch the red ones - just the yellow and the yellow/red………and ideas?
@PetittiGardenCenters

If there are holes or chewed edges then a caterpillar or slug can do damage. If the petals are removed neatly, not torn from the plant it is probably rabbits. Deer will chew and tear.

Thank you so much for your help. It is chewed edges - we don’t have deer and a rabbit couldn’t get up that far - I don’t think………so should I spray? They are new and tender and I think that is why they are being attacked…..especially the yellow one. Thank you again. I just found your channel recently and love it.
