People often ask me what the sixties were like? Just close your eyes and imagine a warm summer evening with the windows and doors open to catch a cool breeze, family members talking, maybe a hot rod or two going down the street. Then out of the speaker of the radio thats always on, and through all the crackeling and static noise comes this angelic voice of Petula Clark and everyone starts to hum, sing, or dance along to whatever joy she is singing. Maybe thats just my recollection.

I was born in 1964, but my parents had the radio on a lot and this is some of the earliest music I remember hearing-the pop hits of that era. I really get the warm and fuzzies from Petula Clark in particular. Brings back my earliest memories of being with my parents and playing with my cousins at my grandmother's house. Its good to hear that someone born in 1993 likes this. I like a lot of things before my time too. True art is timeless.

This IS my favorite Petula Clark songs and one of my favorite songs of all time. It just captures the essence of the 60's--hope, joy, optimism and any problem in the world could be solved. Unfortunately subsequent decades just didn't live up to the expectations of the 1960's!

Did you ever ask yourself why music like this isn't produced any longer? Did you ever ask yourself who produces the current "popular" music, and why they produce it? Did you ever ask yourself how and why we have sunk to the depths we have sunk to? Ask yourself those questions and be honest with yourself, and you'll come to revelations that it is high time you came to.

One of the most charming women of the 60s. A woman who sung during the blitz on London, as a little girl during the war and went on to become an international star...she should be known as Dame Petula Clark. Why she isn't is beyond me.

This is slowly becoming my favourite song of Petula's. I've long been a fan of progressive rock. There's a Dutch band from the early '70s called Focus. Look up "Focus III". It's an instrumental. You'll notice a bit of 'Don't Sleep on the Subway" embedded in this piece of music. Cheers!

On this day in 1967 {September 10th} Petula Clark performed "Don't Sleep In The Subway" on the CBS-TV program 'The Ed Sullivan Show'. Three months earlier on June 3rd it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #5 and spent 10 weeks on the Top 100. On Sept. 16th, 1967 it reached #1 {for 2 weeks} on the Australian Kent Music Report and #12 in the United Kingdom. R.I.P. @martinjp1958 Saw your post. The chords are bizarre (brilliant) for a pop song. From Gmajor, we get B major (III#) and then Abminor (bII). The effect is modulation by a third to B major. "Take off your coat" is yet another modulation by a third to D major. With the big crescendo, the chords create huge tension (resolved deceptively again in Eb at "Don't sleep in the subway). You can find modulations by thirds in songs by Schubert and Schumann although not so much even in Mozart and Beethoven.
