Carrying out the first service since i bought this 2015 Peugeot 508 SW 2.0 180 GT Automatic.
I bought the car with 47,000 miles from an Arnold Clark Dealer. It had a problem with the drivers side heated seat which would be fixed under their warranty at a local Peugeot dealership. Strangely it got a BSI update and came out with a service overdue message by 15,000 miles. The service history book said it was last done at 44,000 miles.
Judging by what come out of the car i think it was good to have done this as soon as possible. The oil seemed thin, the diesel horrible, coolant old and air filter dirty. Im not sure exactly what the previous services included as the book only shows stamps with no specific details as to what work was carried out.
All in this service cost less than £80 to do myself, the oil cost £40 delivered and other items were no more than £40. Servicing is still a big part to ensuring a car lasts a long time without serious trouble and especially on more modern engines it is worth keeping them maintained and ignoring the stupidly long intervals in favour of shorter intervals to ensure the car lasts longer.
This 2.0 engine is probably used in quite a few other PSA cars as well as some fords.

Many thanks for this very well made video. As a former mechanic, I can only approve the high quality of the job you carried out. I also love this car, it’s well made and is very pleasant to drive. I will purchase that special funnel as the coolant of my car hasn’t been replaced since years. The service quality you provide to your car is a great assurance that it shouldn’t make any problem. Again thank you for the precious hints you give to me.

Hope it helps when the weather improves a bit. The 508 hmmm, i fell out with this one GT spec wheels and suspension were far too firm to be practical, it handled extremely well but on rural roads where it was used the majority of the time it was unpleasant. Lower spec models with smaller wheels i think were better. Ended up selling this and buying a berlingo multispace

Hi there, thanks for the comment. Generally on the likes of this 'modern' diesel with all its emissions gubbins i read the service handbook carefully and stick to the exact oil it recommends. I do recall that it advised against the use of flushing fluids. Now i have an old Avantime V6 in the shed at the moment that lay up for 7 years, got it started but it ran with a top end tick. There was nothing to loose by running a flush through it and sure enough after 20 mins of the flush the engine sounded nice and smooth. Although thats an old petrol and worth considerably less where a spare engine from a laguna was available to swap in if it was beyond repair. Unfortunately flushes are a bit of a gamble in that regard. As for cleaning parts, the spray bottle stuff. I just use ordinary brake parts cleaner that comes in a 5l can, i think it is holts.

@peugeotCitroen2CV
@peugeotCitroen2CV 3 жыл бұрын
Hi there I never seen the point in the hybrid 4 system on the 508. Unnecessarily complicated and i think most reviews pointed out it did not really show any significant real world improvement. Especially without a plugin version that would mean say a range of 30 miles without the engine. The 2.0 is powerful and reasonably economical. A word of warning test drive one first. I have since sold this 508, it has a few annoying quirks that might get annoying with time. The ride quality on this GT model was terrible on anything but a perfectly smooth motorway, the interior storage cubbies were all too small to be useful. This particular car cost me £11,000 and the thought of dealing with that depreciation plus having full LED headlights at a cost of over £1000 each made it a bit of a worry to own.

@peugeotCitroen2CV 2 жыл бұрын
Hi thanks for the comment, i do not have a video for the Power steering reservoir. Not something admittedly i look at often. The same suction device used for the oil can be used to drain out what you can, top it up with fresh fluid, drive it for a while and do another flush and then top up. A lot less messy than removing lines. A PAS fluid flush would not have been too necessary on a car of this age, perhaps on an older car. Best to inspect its condition first.

@peugeotCitroen2CV
@peugeotCitroen2CV Жыл бұрын
Hi there Chris, im not sure to be honest. Think its one of the sensors at the front of the block down near the oil filters, but just saying that as the old XUD would have it there. Catcar.info is good at looking at parts diagrams, owners clubs are also worth asking on, worst case scenario pay for an hours access to servicebox parts diagrams and see where the sensor is located, it should also have the workshop manual for how to get that sensor out. Although try the owners clubs either forums or facebook pages first.

Thanks for the video. I'm a Hgv mechanic, so I dont get to work on that many cars. I have always owned peugeot diesels myself. I maintain a 308 1.6 hdi 2009 for a neighbour, and last year they bought a 2017 2.0 hdi 308 gt line from the local dealer, and they have asked me about servicing it in future, as I have been maintaining their cars for around 17 years. Would this be the same engine as the 2.0 gt line that they have bought? And do you know if the fuel filter is the same arrangement? I do the work on my driveway, usually at a weekend, and have come across a few newer VW products lately that have been a real pain after a fuel filter change. I have bought new diagnostic that covers fuel bleeding but it looks like it will only work on VW products. Thanks.
@peugeotCitroen2CV
@peugeotCitroen2CV 3 жыл бұрын
The Peugeot 2.0 HDi is the same basic engine in various states of tune. Although there may be subtle differences in the fuel delivery and emissions systems on the engine. The new shape 308 was also offered with the same 2.0 HDI 180 engine as this 508. Not sure if its the exact same fuel filter arrangement as i have not yet worked on one before. Yes i remember doing the first of the VW 1.6 TDi engines for a friend in about 2010 it was a new car, wouldn't start after the filter change needed a computer to bleed it yet these Peugeot engines just activate the lift pump in the tank or else have a fuel primer bulb to bleed the system.
@garethjones8047
@garethjones8047 3 жыл бұрын
@@peugeotCitroen2CV thanks for the reply. All models of VW products also have a lift pump, but still wont start. I have got away with it by fitting my own priming pump to get the fuel through, but it really is a lot of messing around. Hopefully, with my new diagnostic with this feature, it should be a lot easier in future. I have owned a 306 dturbo with the xud engine for 19 years. Its 23 years old now and covered 221k, I still use it daily. Servicing is so simple, no engine undertray, 5 minute fuel filter change, and the service costs no more than £25 including the oil. I long for those days again.

Thanks very much for the comment. I would say test drive one, test drive the competition, i only kept this a few months i fell out of love very quickly with the 508. Some of the main reasons; - in GT spec the ride quality was abysmal, big french estates are supposed to be smooth the 406 was lovley and supple this crashed over bumps. The 406 could do its top spec with nice leather & wood with soft suspension. Seems now all the top spec pugs all focus on being sporty rather than comfortable which is a shame. Especially as the roads round here seem in much worse state. - the infotainment system was dated, and if the heater was on for any longer than 30 mins the system said it was overheating and that the volume was limited. - interior storage was bad, the central armrest area was tiny, any of the cubbies were tiny only really the door cars available. It doesnt seem major but on a day to day basis it got annoying. - i didnt like the fact the car cost so much and i owned something that was just going to depreciate, the alloys were at risk of getting scratched, and the LED lights while very bright were rare as hens teeth and expensive to replace. - the final nail in the coffin was an irritating trim rattle somewhere above my right ear when driving. Took a lot of it apart and couldnt get to the bottom of it. I sold the 508 and replaced it with a berlingo multispace which was fantastic until it sadly got wrote off, currently driving a 2013 C4 hatchback. If i was looking for an estate to replace the 508 with i have considered an F10 5 series, the volvo V90 also looks nice, just not in a huge rush as the C4 does all i need at the moment. Now an allure might be a bit better, it wont have the big wheels or firm suspension of the GT, possibly a more basic infotainment system and prices surely have dropped a bit since 2020. Mechanically the 2.0 HDi should be a good engine and either automatic or manuals will be good gearboxes.

The plastic tip of the dipstick on our 2014 508 2.0 HDI 163 broke off in the tube, so the mechanic fished it out. We then bought another genuine PSA dipstick, which broke in the exact same place just a few weeks later but was stuck in the tube. Peugeot parts guy said Peugeot had released a revised dipstick tube, so we ordered one and it came with a dipstick too. The new tube has a slightly different shape and the dipstick inserts/releases without any restriction unlike the original, which was obviously causing the top of the dipstick to break off. A year later and the dipstick is still good.

Hello friend... I am writing to you from Argentina, here comes the entire range of PSA (Peugeot, Citroen and DS) with diesel engines. I have a 408 1.6 hdi 115cv (with no active DPF, it means that it is a filter equal to the DPF but it does not have an AdBlue (urea) injector in the DPF nor a diesel injector in the DPF (just like the chevrolet cruze 2.0 comes VCDi 163cv (I also had this vehicle first)) and for me Motor (DV6 9HCG) can take 0w 30 inneo first (always total for PSA engines), up to a certain mileage, and then I can use Quartz 9000 5w-40 or failing that, always use 5w-40. The important thing I want to leave you from the msg is that your engine must use ACEA C1 certified oil, it is low-SAPS with that oil you will have much fewer problems with the DPF clogging. video you have put 5w-30 ACEA C2 Mid-Saps, that oil is for the 1.6 THP gasoline engine, and precisely that engine has Mid-SAPS because gasoline does not generate sulfate particles/ashes, so there is a compensation for "medium sulfates " on the oil side and practically "zero sulfates" on the naphtha; diesel does generate a lot of sulfate particles/ash (a good diesel fuel can have a minimum of 50pp of sulfur (which is later transformed into ash), with that amount engineers are required to design an oil that has at least or more than 250pp of sulfur (Mo / molybdenum (as opposed to Mo, always keep in mind that Mo2 Molybdenum disulfide is not good for these new diesel engines)

Have you experienced wet car pet on drivers side (LHD) on peugeot 406 and if you have what was the reason for the wet carpet
@peugeotCitroen2CV
@peugeotCitroen2CV 3 жыл бұрын
I had all the leaks 406s could have over the 10 years i drove them. If you have a sunroof the drain tubes blocking are the main thing to inspect, there are also small rivets that hold the wind deflector (it pops up when the sunroof is open) some windscreen sealant in the centre of those rivets also stops that drip. Rear light cluster seals with age can dry out and become less effective at sealing. Evaporation barriers not fitted to the doors, or damaged when repairing a door lock or window mechanism.

@@christianrasmussen6739 If the heater matrix is leaking you will get a sweet or funny anti freeze smell inside the car, if you are using antifreeze in the system that is. Ordinary water leaking into the car will not have a smell. Without the sunroof the only other thing that it can be is the radio antenna base, possibly the windscreen if it was not replaced correctly in the past or the door seals. A coolant pressure tester kit (under £100 on ebay, or get the lend of one) might be a good thing to check to see if there is a leak of coolant somewhere.

After servicing "oil invalid measurement" means you have too much oil in the engine. Also the FAP is not working at all. Check the level oil with a genuine dipstick, assure correct level (UNDER the Maximum level on the dipstick) and reset again the service interval. I did it so and now every think is o.k.

Unfortunately i am not the person to ask, i do not see the point in lowered cars especially a practical family car, the effort and expense results in a car with reduced practicality, less comfort and questionable handling. I actually sold this GT as the ride was far too firm on anything but a perfectly smooth motorway, ive always bought big Peugeots purely for the supple ride comfort, take that away and they loose a huge part of their USP

AW-1 JWS3324 as posted above. We have just done 4 x drain/fills on ours at 59k miles / 95k km and it was definitely ready for changing. Make sure the fluid you purchase is JWS3324 only, rather than a generic fluid that supposedly meets 10 different specifications! We added a bottle of Lubegard transmission fluid conditioner to ours. Make sure you have the transmission oil life counter reset in Peugeot Planet/Citroen Lexia or your transmission will shift exactly the same as before until the counter is reset. This is standard PSA procedure when replacing old fluid with new as the transmission uses the oil life counter to adjust the adaptations as the oil ages. The slightly rough changes on our transmission between 2 & 3 and 3 & 4 all disappeared as soon as the counter was reset to zero. Hope this helps.

@@adrian69644Adrian, you're very welcome. I have used Ravenol on other cars as it sure beats the main stealer prices, although we are using Smith & Allan ATF LV in the 508 as it made the drop/fills very economical whilst being JWS3324 specific and fully synthetic like the original. I know many owners with this transmission do a subsequent drop/fill with each annual service and we may do the same. Best of luck.

@@peugeotCitroen2CV Thanks for the reply. I saw the 5L container in the video but I couldn't see if it was premixed or concentrated? Ours looked the same dirty colour as yours and whilst it has never moved from the MAX line in 12 months, it had a slightly oily texture to it, although I couldn't see any oil and the expansion bottle was clean plus no Mayo on the dipstick or filler plug. Don't suppose you remember if yours had a similar texture, which I'm hoping is just down to age (suspect 7 Yr old original antifreeze) rather than a leaking oil or transmission cooler? I agree on the firm ride as we were looking for a GT but settled on the Allure after driving the former as it's basically the same spec minus leather and drivers seat memory but you gain the smaller 18" wheels, which ride much better, although the GT does have the fancier front suspension setup. Brilliant video! 👍

@@dontcare32123 The bottle i used was concentrated, there was a certain dilution with water when it went into the car. I cant remember if there was an oily texture although you can get some bizzare patterns on old anti freeze, flush it all out and refill with new antifreeze. Keep an eye on the condition of the new stuff. With regards the allure, was it the GT or the 2.0 engines that got the double wishbones up front? I know the 1.6 has standard mcpherson struts but thought the 2.0 engines were upgraded.

I suppose it makes it pour out the oil quicker but i never remove it on any cars come to think about it, as i usually go about checking other aspects like the suspension buses or brakes while it drains. It still all drains out, to be honest i cant imagine it slows it down a great amount as the crankcase breather means its not a sealed area preventing the oil from pouring out.

I don't understand how the handbook can have a mistake this big. 2.0 Bluehdi engines run on 0w30 oil, specifically Total Ineo First 0w30 not Total Quart Ineo ECS 5w30 wich was the oil used for the old Euro5 engines. The oil required must have the PSA B71 2312 approval, wich only 0w30 oils have. The engine will be very happy with the oil you used, but the DPF won't.

I have heard of some exotic material called Alooominum, although aluminium for the sump was sufficient on the 406. Plasitc, its not all that uncommon on modern cars. If it works then there is nothing to complain about, haven't had any problems yet with them. They are glass fibre reinforced composite sumps, not sure why they have went down this route for manufacturing them. Im sure they were constrained by emissions regulations etc and plastic sumps were another thing that had to be done. It would be interesting to hear from an actual automotive engineer to understand the material choice and reasons behind it.
