Do you like Phil Collins? I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. The song, In Too Deep, is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock. Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight, Land of Confusion, and Against All Odds. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Sussudio, a great, great song, a personal favorite.

That's why modern music is increasingly crappy and bland, the label executives can only have lyrics and artist's styling and behaviors conform to whatever market research and focus group data recommends, so we get artist after artist after artist molded from the same template again and again, can anyone really tell apart James Blunt from John Mayer from Ben Folds Five? Collins wrote “Sussudio” the way he wrote a lot of his songs by playing around with a drum machine, coming up with an idea, and then writing to that idea. In this case, Collins was improvising, coming up with melodic ideas by singing nonsense words over his own beat. This is also how a lot of rappers write these days. Collins came up with the “Sussudio” hook, thinking he’d later go back and replace that non-word with something that meant something. But he couldn’t think of anything else that fit the track as well, so he kept the gibberish, and he worked around it.

You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock. Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds. I wanna get back to the 80's in all kinds of ways, for plenty of reasons! Music was better. Everything was better! The future looked brighter. I wouldn't even consider having kids in today's times, not with the climate change, political unrest, oh so many things too long to list...*sigh* I love my 80's music though! :-)

The No Jackets Required is such an absolute masterpiece. It was my first album (cassette) that I own when I was 12 (of course I had to get my mom to purchase it for me). Played Sussudio over and over again on our cassette player. Such memories.

I was a kid when this tune was first released, and I have always considered it one of the best songs Phil has ever written. It immortalized him, and it also played the role of making that guy something himself for a name once he became a soloist. In my opinion, he's one of the best artists the UK has ever had.

I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where, uh, Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums.
@FluffWit8 жыл бұрын
Christy, take off your robe. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. Sabrina, remove your dress. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Sabrina, why don't you, uh, dance a little. Christy, get down on your knees so Sabrina can see your asshole. Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds. Sabrina, don't just stare at it, eat it. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Sussudio, a great, great song, a personal favorite.

Can you believe when Peter Gabriel left Genesis they auditioned like 30 singers before Phil stepped out from behind the drums and said let me give it a go. He nailed the sound they wanted and the rest is history. He may never have taken that step if they hadn't struggled finding a replacement.
