Thank you for the trip to Philadelphia. In the last two weeks the new mayor there has attempted a cosmetic crackdown of two blocks at Kensington and Allegheny Avenues. Removal of winter tents and scrubbing the sidewalks has only pushed the encampments of homeless addicts to the neighborhood sidestreets. The poverty and crime experienced there still is a blight upon an otherwise beautiful city.

When I first arrived in New York I also thought Shen Yun looked good. I even brought it up in class and a Chinese student spoke up and said “oh no! Thats just propaganda.” She made me seem pretty dumb but later when I realized she was right I was glad I had the type of class where people (students) felt comfortable enough to speak up. She saved myself and others from wasting our money. And I learned not to talk about something hypothetically or to use hyperbole. You have to actually have the experience yourself-firmly- especially in New York City.

This is a really good first video hitting many of the main 'touristy' spots. I live just outside Philly and concur about the breadth of the art and the homeless tragedy. The Liberty Bell cracked after being rung for the first time. It was recaste twice, but kept splitting. Also, Reading Market is a fantastic spot for many of us in the area as a great place for a variety of foods. Sorry about your experience with cheesesteaks. I suspect that it was so busy and you didn't get the full experience. You can add any veggies (I add tomato, pickles, mushrooms and fried onions) and many of us add ketchup, too. Just plain shredded beef and cheese doesn't really do it justice. Glad you got off the beaten path and got to see more than the standard tourist traps. I don't often go into Philly anymore, except for sporting events. Great video, Dari!

I remember, as a 5th-grader in elementary school, feeling so inspired by a report I did on William Penn and his vision that led to Philadelphia being named the “City of Brotherly Love.” It’s very sad and embarrassing to me as an American to see what has become of Philadelphia and our other once-great cities since then with the crime, drugs, homelessness, etc… Slava (from RussianPlus) also touched on this during a video he made while visiting Philadelphia in 2021.

Are you planning to visit the "Amish community" in Pennsylvania? They usually sell great homemade breads, chesses, pastries and more. The best kind of homemade food. They cook from scratch, no preservatives. Pennsylvania has one of the biggest Amish communities in the USA. They refuse technology and have a kind of life, like in the 1800's

Hi, I finally got to see your video about Philadelphia.Thank you for your unique perspective. Mine is that Philadelphia is the city of brotherly love and is very historical as part of the 13 colonies. It was even the capitol of the U.S. for a day I believe. Thanks for the facts on the mural and the art and architecture! And for highlighting the negatives of homelessness and drug misuse. I mostly come to Philadelphia now just to watch football as my friends are Eagles fans. Again, thanks for creating such wonderful content. Echoes of Rocky on some of the scenes you showed us which was fun and surprised about the number of museums but good to see. Cradle of the free USA, and still have the bell! Enjoyed this one and interested to see your views on the other cities you visited.

Good Stuff. Did you get to see the murals and mosaic alleys? I think it's on or near South Street. I like museums too, the Rocky steps are neat and all, but the museums are definitely more interesting. Newark, NJ has a decent museum, Washington, D.C. has some great museums too. I'm sure you know about the ones in NYC already too. There's a town in PA called Bethlehem; every year they have a festival called Musikfest, if you're still in the Eastern States this Summer, consider checking it out. Or, if you ever find yourself on the West coast in the summer, Go to Bend, Oregon, it's the best town I've been to in years. Good free music downtown all summer, a generally young and upcoming population, some of the best brew-pub food I've ever had, and the nearby Deschutes National forest is almost endlessly explorable, tons to see, including a lava river cave.

Oh wow, I just took a trip to Philadelphia this weekend, and also went to the art museum for the first time! I had a vegetarian cheese steak at Monk's Cafe that was just amazing. It had slices of seitan (wheat gluten) as the protein, and Gruyere cheese, and worked much better than you'd think. I agree that regular cheese steaks are way overhyped. I also enjoyed thrift shopping in Queen Village. And for contemporary art, Arch Enemy is one of my favorite galleries.

You should have gone to the old Boston Gazette building which is in Philadelphia as it was the home of Benjamin Franklin and the newspaper he started. He got his start printing an almanac called the Poor Richard’s Almanac which with the usual farming forecasts gave advice in little phrases that really helped. Unfortunately there is a secret in the basement as many skeletons were found buried. This was not unusual for Ben as he often went to the local graveyard to get bodies that were unclaimed. These bodies would become research subjects for him as he mapped anatomy of the body writing down what he found. This body snatching was perfectly legal as the bodies were unclaimed but is illegal today. Back in the 1700s there was a trend to study anatomy straight from the source and it was perfectly legal. Also I don’t know if you’re squeamish but the Mutter museum is in Philadelphia. It is open to the public and free for medical students and anyone who shows an hospital id. It’s basically a museum on the study of the human body and everything it has. There are exhibits on diseases and conditions that can scare you. There are pieces of presidents that surgeons have taken out and donated to the museum. The main attraction though is the death cast of the Bunker brothers and their shared liver preserved in liquid. The Bunker brothers were conjoined twins from modern Thailand that traveled for the PT Barnum circus as part of the freak show. They semi-retired as they occasionally toured to earn some money but mostly spent time on their adjoining farms. Unusually the brothers were completely different in personality as one was a belligerent drunk most days while the other was very respectful and did things right. They were married to different women and both had a lot of kids. Unfortunately one day the drunken brother died in bed but the other brother hoping for separation called for an immediate doctor as he had chance to live if the doctor could sever the connection quickly. The doctor arrived too late as the other one died as his blood drained into the dead brother. The doctor had no choice but to create death cast and remove the shared liver and donated them to the Mutter along with all reports hoping that he could prevent another set of twins from dying together.

Unfortunately, the current state of Kensington is the result more of a policy of containment. Up until the current Mayor took office, the drug problem was all pushed into Kensington so as to make sure it didn't spread to the rest of the city. Mayor Parker tried cleaning it up by forcing addicts into treatment, and cleaned the streets, but I don't know if that was all for optics and if the area has sunk back into an open air drug market (I wouldn't travel down there to find out). It is quite sad. Until the late 80's/early 90's, the area was just a working class neighborhood and was an ok place to be.

Unfortunately, most of our big cities have problems with crime, drugs, and homelessness. And trying to figure out what causes it, usually leads to political debates, which you probably want to avoid on a KZbin travel channel. 😅 I will just say that I'm glad you used footage from your friend to highlight the zombie district problems, and did not try to venture into any dangerous neighborhoods yourself.

A lot of our medium to smaller size cities have problems with homelessness too. You just don't notice it as much because the numbers are not as large. I don't think it's a democrat or a republican problem, because neither of them solve the problem. It's a NIMBY problem.

Great day trip video! My goodness, Dari, you are a machine due to all the walking you did. I hope your shoes held up and you didn’t get any blisters on your feet. I’ve visited up to Philly from Washington DC and always enjoyed the town. I especially like taking my young daughter to the Science Museum there. Next time you go to Philly, try hitting some of the beautiful gardens in and around the City that are often associated with Philadelphia wealth at the turn of the 20th Century where old manor houses are operated as public or privately operated pleasure gardens open for public enjoyment. My favorite is one just 30 min. West of the City called Chanticleer Gardens. It’s magnificent!!! Please consider coming back to DC soon. Not only DC, but you really need to try to stop by Baltimore to visit the Aquarium and, especially, catch an Orioles baseball game at Camden Yards! Since I assume you’ll have to root for the Yankees, a division rival of the Os, especially this season, you could catch a game when the Yankees are in town. Anyway, as always, love your videos!!! Keep up the good work!

If you have time to travel somewhere else, you should go to State College PA. One of the largest college towns in the country. And it is usually at the top of the list of everyone's favorite college towns. Something different, that you don't really have in Europe. It's a small town, but it's very dense and walkable, so you don't need a car to see the sights. You take the bus to Philly again, and then you transfer busses there, to State college. It's only a couple hours ride after Philly. You would probably need to stay overnight though. Probably more fun in fall time, when the students are there.

tbh a lot of the things in PA are like the Philly Cheesesteaks and the Liberty Bell pretty much what people expect or a little bit of a downgrade haha sometimes the things are slightly better than expected like Longwood Gardens or the Lehigh Valley but it's just not as impressive as NYC or Philly I do not recommend going to the middle of PA unless you want to visit random things like where a mine has been burning for decades or want to hunt deer sure 3 mile island, Hersey, Punxsutawney, Gettysburg, etc might sound fun or interesting but just remember outside of Philly and Pitt most places in PA are isolated and will be a full day trip which will hopefully be super cool but if the weather is bad or the place not interesting you'll only have the expensive road and nice trees the Lehigh Valley should be your next stop if you want to try PA again as the 3 main cities have a relatively high level of stability and wealth compared to the rest of PA basically the middle of the state is a resource extraction zone, NJ is more expensive so people move over the border with their money, and NYC and Philly stabilize the area with their massive levels of consumption which makes the Lehigh Valley a distribution hub which can't fully die even if all local resource extraction and industry dies in some ways I think it might be a Northeastern American equivalent to Yekaterinburg although Pittsburgh might be a slightly better comparison when people ask what the place is like I usually just tell them it's a very okay or a very medium place which is not the answer people are looking for the best time to visit depends on what you want to do as places like Bethlehem and Nazareth go crazy for Christmas but the fall tree colors are really something individual locations in PA have one big thing like Hersey, but the Lehigh Valley has many medium things like Crayola, Martin Guitar, the National Canal Museum, etc random note for 2024: this is the year of the cicada

The opioid epidemic is indeed sad. Most of it is related to the Mexican cartels smuggling it in across the border (hence the political hot button issue of securing it) & it’s made using precursors that are being produced by Chinese & now sometimes even Indian suppliers. It’s an ongoing battle. Addicts generally stay on the streets because homeless shelters won’t take take in people using drugs or abusing alcohol since it makes it unsafe for the others at the shelter. Each city /state handles it differently though. Like Portland and I think some other city in Canada legalized all hard drugs which personally I feel is a mistake and only going to backfire horribly. I can’t recall if they ended up reversing it or not.

I think you’ve now been to more places in USA than I have. And I was born here. My philosophy is any chance I get is to jet off to Europe instead.

You should have gone to South Street and Cheese Steak row.. Pat’s , Geno’s , Jim’s or Mama’s… gone down to the ball park . Visited the very first Hospital in America.. I could go on and on ..

Wait. You came down to Orlando & Universal Studios!? No wonder you were feeling chilly in Philly 😂Now I am stuck waiting again for the next exciting episode (with alligators?!)😂

In a perfect world, I would like to see you in a "team-up" video with @TheKrystalPalace who appears to be a New Yorker who somehow does a thorough job covering Orlando theme parks (mostly Universal). She must fly like crazy to do all the Universal content that she does + seems a fun & super nice person - like you!

Your trip to Philly looked very nice to see the art, parks & bldgs. Too bad the cheesesteak was a bit off; couldn’t tell what type of cheese it came with. Recently, I’ve seen a lot of people go to South Philly fo Angelos Pizzeria for the best cheesesteaks made with ribeye, onion and Cooper Sharp cheese. Pat’s & Geno’s are well known places too, but avoid the cheese whiz. Congrats on winning the business competition at school, great job 👍🏻. Keep traveling

if you don't mind me asking, why avoid the cheeze whiz? I thought that was an original ingredient.
@stevepool80346 ай бұрын
@@ronw8628 it is indeed, but the real cheese is just so much better
