As a recovering addict, it's hard to hear people say "they started with weed and moved on to harder drugs". The medical system generates more addicts than weed ever did. I was put on to opiates by my doctor, as was every addict I knew and know.

I’m from Philadelphia. I left it in 1983. Seeing what it’s become today breaks my heart and terrifies me. It amazes me how the residential neighborhoods, including where I grew up in North Philly, have totally deteriorated. But this is what happens when the citizens can’t find decent employment. If you make no money, you have no way to maintain or improve. And the introduction of drugs into neighborhoods like this (a political history all it’s own) accelerated it’s decline. Breaks my heart.

You are a rare person as the general rule is that incarceration leads to more incarceration it's called recidivism. Incarceration is not necessarily going to result in a person abstaining from drug use.Usually creates more problems eg person now has a criminal record.

Re: Mt. Vernon Cemetery, the abandoned one you walked through, I found that the absentee owner, a lawyer, was tracked down, control was wrested from him and "a group of Philadelphia preservationists, cultural leaders, and volunteers" have helped to "legally name the Philadelphia Community Development Coalition as conservator to do large-scale landscaping and repairs until a long-term steward can take charge." (The Inquirer, Sept 2021) so we'll see how that goes. Good video!

The "High Line" you walked was originally one of the inbound viaducts to the old Reading Terminal. In an effort to consolidate all commuter rail lines, SEPTA constructed a tunnel that goes under the area near where you were in the video and provides 4 tracks into Jefferson Station (formerly Market East/Reading Terminal), Suburban Station and 30th Street Station. All lines now have the capability of connecting to each other as a result and none need to terminate in Center City. Reading Terminal was rendered obsolete, but the market continues to operate beneath it. The original Reading Terminal was later converted into the Pennsylvania Convention Center, with the head house and train shed being focal points in the design. The old tracks rejoin the new near Temple University station.

Sadly, nowadays street homeless are drugs addicts, and they are addicted to cocktail of nasty chemicals such as fentanyl, horse tranquilizer, elephant tranquilizer, sedative benzo, rat poison, nitazenes chemicals, P2P based meth, wasp dope, and other nasty stuff. That is in the pills they smoke all the time. They are quickly damaged mentally and physically beyond the point of repair. Street addicts gradually destroy everything around themselves. The only thing they really wanna is to be as close as possible to their fentanyl dealers. I hope the western world, adapts. Eg ends prohibition and introduces venues that responsibly sell regulated recreational drugs (denying their sale to underage children).Prohibition creates demand and generates criminalization.if legalised Norms would develop around recreational use and abuse just as they have around alcohole. I have watched drug use increase exponentially since the 1980s.PROHIBITION has failed as has neoliberalism. Go back to social democracy and decriminalize recreational drugs.Make them cheaper and cleaner and use the tax made from their sales to build housing and provide therapeutic resources Think outside of the box.

the high line you walked, to answer your question of why they closed that in 1984, that used to carry the main Reading lines into Center City. In 1984 SEPTA opened the center city connection and rerouted trains into that (that’s what’s now Jefferson, Suburban and 30th St Stations). The goal was to make service more efficient by connected up the Reading and Pennsylvania lines via the new tunnel.

And, just like here, the saddest thing about riding around and looking at the abandoned and dilapidated homes and neighborhoods, was that you could imagine how they were in fifties, or whenever. And, kids would be playing, and families living there who knew each other. And, people weren't standing on the corners selling drugs, or passed out in the alleys. I don't know how a city ever comes back when it goes down this far. I'm no sure its even possible.

@@Diana-gf9tk never apologize for a long reply. I hate when people mock someone for typing a paragraph as a reply LOL. It's almost like revealing how stupid they are saying they can't or won't read. I live an hour from Philly and have been trying to help extract people stuck in that hell on earth. I talk to a girl regularly who had her leg amputated last year due to a horrible infection from shooting that new street dope. It's NOT heroin it's much much worse. I shot heroin a lot on and off in my 20s then got clean in my 30s and stayed clean. The stuff they're selling on the street today is much worse than the heroin i used to buy in that same area. Today it's fentynal mixed with xylazine (an animal tranquilizer NOT meant for humans). Dealers don't care. They get people to the point where they desperately need more just to feel normal and be able to function. Most of these people on the streets are literally zombies and don't WANT help. I think it should not be up to them at this point. I think some form of martial law needs to be applied where they can be forced into an evaluation, and then into treatment. Vacant buildings can easily be turned into modest rehabs and sober living housing for them. A room with lots of bunk beds, and a shared bathroom. It's a good environment for them to first and foremost DETOX off that hellish garbage they're addicted to (with the help of a nurse practitioner and doctor who checks on them daily) as well as meds, and shelter, food, etc. After a few weeks of that, they will have clarity they cannot possibly get living on the street in that hellish cycle of addiction. Then after they're detoxed they can start to figure out what they want to do, and maybe reestablish contact with family or friends, etc. Then go from there. As for the street dealers pushing this poison, they should be placed in some form of prison which strips them of any type of bail or bond for at least 90 days. This would mean that a dealer making thousands a day off this suffering, can't simply bail out and get back to it. They'll have to sit for at least 3 months which is a lot of time to think and also lose the spot they had before for dealing. I have lots of other ideas I'm trying to pass along and work with, but unfortunately our city officials don't care. Out of sight out of mind.

Just stating the facts as I have witnessed them in almost 70 years. Liberals and African Americans do not care about their neighborhoods. they do not know how to live cleanly or civily. I am not being racist, just observant. Prove me wrong. I would welcome it. I would love to know I am wrong. I wish I were wrong. But I am not. And I am too old to not say it. You can get clean anywhere if you really want to. We had to leave behind everything we knew for awhile. We rebuilt our lives in the hoods of Philly during a pandemic. I lived in Philly for 17 years, loved it. The biggest crime I had happen to me at my home in North West Philly, my friends car was stolen, and my 2 lion ornaments were taken while my wife and I were at church. My motorcycle was almost taken but the would be robber left me a note and said he could have stolen it and it should be hidden from sight. Hard to hide things in Philly. Great time, great city. But you have to keep up on pride. My neighbors fence was graffitied one night and about 4- 5 days later I asked my neighbor if he was going to take it off his fence. He said, "why should I do that, there just going to do it again." I asked for his permission to take it off and he let me. 15 years later, nothing. I also picked up the trash once a week on my block. No one else helped out. But it stayed clean.

Awesome video! I will add something that you didn't touch on: for many people- you guys werent but for some it's easy to say "well I had a hard life and never did drugs why are they?" and to look at all of the people on those streets with judgment. But the reality is that every person in places like Kensington is an individual who has a story and had dreams. Usually mental health issues (usually undiagnosed), other traumas, and just generally living a life through those shattered dreams takes them a step further down the slide one unplanned step at a time. Not a single one of them said "I want to go be a homeless druggie on the streets." None of those people want to be there. But we have a system that pushes people down if they don't fit in, doesn't support them with their mental or physical health enough, and places like Kensington is the result.

We will never reduce street homelessness without reducing the amount of fentanyl and other nasty drugs available on the streets

In Philly you have to form a tight pact with your neighbors. If someone breaks into your car/house and I catch them you never talk to the cops until we talk first. Just stick to the story we made up. Never change anything and I mean not one word. The junkies clear out everything they can get a nickel for. That's why you never say you're going on vacation on social media. Everyone knows atleast one junkie and that person knows every junkie. I don't know how it is in other cities or even other parts of Philly but in my neighborhood we all legally carry. If a neighbor catches someone stealing we kick the shit out of them up until they're about to get knocked out. We want them to remember our block and to tell the other junkballs where not to steal. So far so good. We have the lowest amount of crime in the entire city since the 70s. If they junkies don't get the message and try to steal again there is a safe house that is only used for two things. A place to be safe from anything or a place to take thieves and torture them for a couple days. Sounds terrible I know but violence is the only thing junkies and politicians understand.

I'm from the area and Philly has some extremely rough parts. Temple is nasty outside of the patrolled areas. It's a city where you can go a few blocks and be in a bad spot. The police have sort of come to terms with the drug markets since the gangs pretty much self police. Center city is pretty nice and the historic districts are really cool and have a ton of history. 95% of the city if totally fine. It's that small percent that's rough and it's not necessarily the drug areas.

Just finished watching this, the 1st video of yours I've ever watched + I want to thank u for the Philly love - I'm from the city, born + raised + unlike the other YTer that s*** all over the city en totem, u showed respect (hard to come by anyone showing love for the city let alone Kensington so ta for that). Most people drive down 1 street in Philly + trash its entirety. We are so many stories, so many neighborhoods, far too many to be sussed in one reductive statement (again, other guy, did that not u). Consider me subscribed.

That is unbelievable so brutal that it has gotten that to that state. Very sad. Greeting from Edmonton Canada

the neglected graveyard....why would anyone care about the dead, when they do not care about the living??
