This is a piece of FOG (Found On Ground) wood. Maybe some of you recognize it and can let the rest of us know what kind of wood it is.
I made a mistake early on and then had to cope with it and adjust all the way through the turning of this bowl. I hope I can remember to be more careful with my next piece! Finished in shellac.

Bradford pear. This was the base cut-off of a sucker branch which grew tight to the main trunk, so not truly a crotch piece. It came down in an ice storm several years ago and was at the curb, free to take. I sent it to Phil because I knew there was something gorgeous and unique in it, but I couldn't see it. He discovered what it wanted to become! Thank you, Phil, for revealing what an ugly chunk of firewood can be! Much like Cinderella and her Fairy Godmother...... 😜 😉 Thumbs up 👆

You could always make a stand for it or turn it into a wall hanger. As an art piece it doesn't need to do anything except be displayed the way you like it. In my experience, the decision between "firewood" and "useful" wood depends mostly on the battle between the imagination of the artist and his need to keep warm :)

Thank You PHIL, Thank You Dave from Calmwood Creations...Mistakes?? BooBoo's?? Problems?? It all matters NOT with me Phil. I LOVE watching your turning adventure wither or not you feel you are happy with the finished turning or not. I enjoy sitting back watching each and every episode you offer!!! Love the drama with this turning in particular Phil. LOTS of strategy /compromise involved. It is not as much fun without the drama. FUN ONE PHIL & UNTIL NEXT TIME.....TM...P.S. ..Oh yea I believe that FOG wood is called "Woodpecker (plus tiny little hole in it's center, ha) wood"...

Had a heckuva time getting rid of the belly button. Gorgeous of course. I work with wire, I would have added a stand with four strands of 4 gauge coming up to a bronze wrapping and a finger hook dropping down and out to go through that woodpecker hole to hold it up. I love that you always get me to thinking about your guest-star wood and how you make gorgeous all the time and ‘what would I do’ if it happened to me. Thank You so much for that. such a gorgeous piece, I’m envious. Thanks for the video as well.

What the hell can I turn out of that ? Once again Phil's got the best idea : keeping the bark instead of removing it , that could have been most woodturner's idea , and mine as well , every video tells us : there is actually no waste , there is a way...
