The improvements within the tech over the years for a tool that has essentially been doing the same thing are equally impressive.

Actually I just found out I totally do need one of these. I have a KZbin channel and I just found I have to redo footage because I didn't get focus right on my latest video. I use a Nikon D850 and shoot at 4K because I just don't like the look of my Canon 80D. Nikon auto focus is unusable and because I am a one man outfit, I can't really see what I am doing. Soooo, I just bought a SmallHD Focus 7 ...Hopefully that will help me up the look of my future videos! Thanks!
@FreshSqueezedLightning4 жыл бұрын
As a 1st AC, I only pull with Small HD monitors. Focus assist can be wildly inaccurate on most monitors, confusing specular highlights as “in focus”, which is why I use peaking. Once you learn the exact look and how to dial in intensity on peaking strength based on certain lens character, level of shallowness and darkness of a room I know how to use it like a 3rd hand. Small HD is the only monitor that I trust honestly when I’m in crazy scenarios, such as round front LOMO anamorphic 100mm wide open on the Sony Venice’s full frame. I’m pulling eyelash vs eyeball at some points then when I need critical reference. My biggest caveat of small HD monitors is how hot they get, just like Teradek, it is insane sometimes. My personal preference is using 98 Wh Gold Mount batteries on the plates. Been using a Cine 7 on this show I’m on currently, but going to buy a 702 Touch, thanks for pushing me over the edge to make the decision!
@nickwilloughby82264 жыл бұрын
Most focus pullers I work for now seem to have gone 1303 with all this large format work. Especially on shows and movies. Any reason you stick to 7”? Currently considering picking this up for tvc work here and there for it’s price point and portability.

Top Video as always Mr Bloom. I do like the clarity of your opinions. I have a very similar history to yourself.. though I think my eye sight requires a 17" monitor as an on-board now! For what it's worth, my opinion is the same and different on SmallHD. Been a long time user and had about 5 different models over the years.. Always loved the screen quality, but never been a fan of their interface... buttons and wheels and especially joysticks failing.. and as always is the case when you're miles from home... [not a great fan of one button rules them all!] So nice to see the touch screen will fix that problem :) and even better with all the other bits and bobs this model offers. Keep up the enjoyable conversations.

In terms of 4K, you are right that we do not need a native 4K resolution, but I would argue that we do need a 4K input because the image does look sharper. All of my monitors that accept 4K and down converts to 1080p is much sharper and it makes it super easy to see focus.

I own a 702 OLED that i use for work, as a Focus puller. Whenever stationary on sticks (usually indoors or on jobs with little movement) the setup is 702OLED, Teradek of some sort and a WCU4 or SXU. The few times we're actually on the go outdoors and i have a handset with monitor, i simply rent a 703 Bolt to go with a WCU4. Love their monitors, but I cannot stand fingerprints (plus norwegian winters demand gloves, and that's a no go for touch screens) so the 702 touch is no for me, even though i don't doubt for a second that it is wonderful.
