My How To video of my process of replacing / installing new Clutch Friction Plates to my 06 BMW F650GS Dakar motorcycle.
I was not experincing any serious clutch problems but i didnt know the full history of the bike but it was now at 30000 miles / 48000 km's, and I had done 11000 miles with no clutch change. I am preping my bike for a long UK to Mongolia and back trip and though it wise to pre do this.
At the same time I installed new water pump and installed a flexable oil return pipe. These videos are also on my channel, stay tuned.

thank you , Ive watched many of your videos and they have really helped me , with repairing my own Bmw adventure bikes so I would very much like to share , what I found made that oil return line not a big deal at least for me , I literally watched all the videos of doing the clutch in my 2003 f650 gs at lest 50 times , to the point I felt I had done the job numerous times , so when I did the job , I knew where the hiccups might happen and I was able to look at like , well here we go again and I had this idea what about using a 1/4 inch extension that is 12 t0 14 inches long along with a Torx bit 1/4 inch socket of the size for that torx bolt , and I realized real quick that I could remove the control unit the one that controls the fuel injection and that was real easy which opened up space to not only see that bolt clearly, but to easily remove the bolt from that little arm , and it really wasn't that tough to move that return pipe at the same time as removing the clutch cover , and when I went to put it back I put a drop of blue locktite on the screw torx side and set that screw on that 12 inch 1/4 extension with a 1/4 inch torx bit and set it standing up for the time it took for that drop of blue lock time to set , it held that screw to the bit just fine and was real easy to get that screw down to where the the little braket on that oil return was close to the entry point of that screw the blue lite tire was strong enough to manuver the screw and even help light up the bracket to the hole , screw it in and then when it was tight just a easy leaning the extension a bit witch broke the hold of that drop of blue locktite easy peasy 😎 word of warning don't use the red locktite use the blue ive used this method 3 times now and it really takes the stress out of this job , and its not so hard to move that pipe out of the way for removal or reattachment , and thank you agin for your videos I can't thank you and others that have shared their repairs enough ride on , have a good time , thank you so much sincerely David Schoenoff. good video, presumably your water pump shaft was ok. Mine was worn so I am putting new one in as well as the 2 seals.

hi, yes the shaft looked fine, it was just a preemptive replacement.

I have 2000 f650gs mileage 35000km and had trouble with clutch slipping. Before ordering clutch parts ,I experimentally changed engine oil. It was 10W40 partial Gr3 base oil JASO MA1 and changed to 0W60 Elf MA2. Problem fixed. Cutting the pipe and replacing it by the tube is good choice!

How long along did you change the oil? I’m wondering if the fix will continue as that sounds like not a recommended oil type for the bike. Let us know how you get on.

@@PhilJC Changed oil was in the bike for about 500Km, 1 year. I guess MA1 grade cheap oil works bad when the clutch is about 50% worn off.

But that oil is also protecting the engine, it would concern me using the wrong spec oil.

hi, maybe it needs a hit with a rubber mallet, or gently use a flat screwdriver or blade to prize it apart.

So you cut the rigid oil return pipe and push the flexible one ? This is good decision Can you make pictures or video how did you put it together please ?

Hi, I'm a bit of a noob at mechanical works but motivated to learn... Could I know what oil you used to bathe the friction plates and what brand of friction plates did you get? Thx for your help
@PhilJC
@PhilJC 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, good luck with your learning, its great fun and a great achievement feeling. I just use standard engine oil that will go in the bike to bath the plates which are EBC ones.

@@PhilJC Thank you very much for the information!!! I was looking at the EBC plates. Hard to know which after market clutch plates are best. There is like EBC, TRW, Newfren, Ferodo... Now I just have to get that and the equipment to replace the return oil pipe too. Thanks again for your help :)

How many kms to suspect clutch problems....??
@PhilJC
@PhilJC 4 жыл бұрын
Anything over 10,000km I guess to 'suspect' but it may not be, and it all depends on your driving style and use I guess. You could go on for many more km's with no problems.
