I also want to make a suggestion to everyone, try recording a guitar and vocal track (or whatever your instrument is) as a test/trial recording and that way you can play around with the effects, mixing, mastering...... (without ruining a well recording track or song). It's best to practice using this recording unit first with a guitar, vocal, or whatever instrument you play. :)

Omg thank you sooo much! Idk why they made that so confusing to add reverb and delay... I feel you should be able to press the effects button and simple turn on any reverb with one button press.
@philtipping5 жыл бұрын
@PianoLee thanks for the feedback - glad it helped... although it *is* easy if you just want to *hear* reverb in your monitors while you are recording - the problem is only when you want to *record* the effect at the same time :) This may not be as big an issue as people think as, if you record *any* effects live, it's impossible to change your mind afterwards without re-performing the piece. You may also want to apply other effects after recording, so once you're in the mindset of applying effects during bouncing or mixing down, it's no longer confusing, if you see what I mean :) By the way, if you want delay, as opposed to reverb, this effect is duplicated inside the guitar effect, and this *can* simply be recorded live at the touch of a button. Here's a list of all the effect types and when they can be used www.tascamforums.com/threads/dp24-32-fx-definitive-summary-of-effects.4162/

@@philtipping I didn't know that it was possible to record more than one effects simultaneously
@philtipping4 жыл бұрын
@@Oceans_Resurrection well there's a lot of mis-information about this on the internet unfortunately. People tend to just use the term "effect" without being precise, but as mentioned in the previous response, there are 3 totally separate effect sections which can all be used simultaneously. Each section is configured differently and each has its own limitations. They are 'pre-wired' in 3 separate parts of the machine, so it all depends on what you are trying to do. This is why the tutorial series concentrates so much on the signal flow. It might seem overly boring and 'too complicated', but understanding this is crucial to getting the most from these machines.

Do i understand you correctly? You can't just turn on the send effects like you can the guitar effects? You hve to use the bounce bus to make the reverb/chorus/delay live?
@philtipping Жыл бұрын
@reardondearborn Yes they are used differently as they are 'wired' to different points in the machine. The guitar effect is wired into the track path, either in the recording path or the playback path. The send effect is wired to the stereo bus in multitrack or mixdown modes or the bounce bus in bounce mode. In multitrack mode, you cannot record the send effect even though you can still hear/monitor it. In mixdown mode, you can record it to the master file. In bounce mode, you can record it onto the bounce destination track. Video 11 was a clarification to show how you can record the send effect live by using bounce mode with live input signals. Normally you would use bouncing to process tracks which are already recorded, but as the video shows, bounce mode also mixes live input signals along with the pre-recorded ones, so this gets round the problem of recording send effects onto a track with live signals.

@reardondearborn Жыл бұрын
@@philtipping you say you can still hear the send effect in multitrack mode, though not record it - how do you do this?
@philtipping Жыл бұрын
@reardondearborn Nothing special is required in order to *hear* the internal send effect, apart from configuring it as normal. You'll hear it on the stereo output and/or monitors, along with any other signals from tracks or live inputs if their faders are up. Details are in video 5, but basically you need to turn on send-1 in the mixer screen for *each* track and/or input you want to send to the effect. Turn up the individual send-1 levels, and turn up the master send-1 level. In the send effect screen, select and turn on the required send effect and turn up the return level. If you use POST for these effects (in the mixer screen), the signal level sent to the effect is also controlled by each track/input fader, so make sure these are also turned up. If you use PRE, the fader will make no difference as the full signal level from each track/input will go to the send effect regardless. All these steps are listed in the step-by-step guide, available here www.philizound.co.uk/freebies/dp24-32/dp24-32.html

Hi there. Recently purchased the same machine. Just that I am unable to freeze the internal effect onto an instrument. Example delay onto a guitar as I get a better feel with the delay than trying to add it after the fact. After recording say 2 tracks with guitar switching the effect on one channel , turns the effect off on the second channel even though both have been recorded with the same effect. Also have a dp01 fx which does not do this. It plays back the track as recorded with the same intensity and effect. Appreciate any assistance. Thanks.
@philtipping6 жыл бұрын
+Waged Hi, your best bet is to watch the tutorials from the start - all the different effects are explained, and you can see how each type fits in the recording path and how many can be active at the same time. There's more written details in my step-by-step guide (details in video 12), and here www.tascamforums.com/threads/dp24-32-fx-definitive-summary-of-effects.4162/ If you are using the delay from the Send effect, you can apply this to multiple tracks live, but you have to resort to 'tricks' like bouncing live as shown in this video no. 11, which means you have to record a 'mix' of the 2 guitars - you can't keep the recordings separate. If you're using the delay from the Guitar Insert effect, then you can only have the effect on one track at any one time.

Hello there!! Many thanks for your effort:) what i didn t get is how many effect i do have for chanel? I mean without external fx how many can i apply each chanel? (I am speaking about insert and send efect)
@philtipping3 жыл бұрын
@Angelica Lopez Ramirez Hello; thank you for your kind words. There are different numbers depending on which effect type you mean. There are 2 types of insert effect, one is used in the 8 input paths, in which case there are 8. The other is used in the track path, in which case there is only 1, although it comprises a block of 4 different effects all chained together. The send effect can be used with any or all inputs and any or all tracks simultaneously. This summary may help www.tascamforums.com/threads/dp24-32-fx-definitive-summary-of-effects.4162/ You can use bouncing to get round the limitations and apply different effects to different tracks at each bounce. Hope that helps.

Q. is there a way to record dry to some tracks but have the send fx record to other tracks so on playback the music is on say track 1 and 2 and the fx are on track 3 and 4 and you can post balance/eq the fx? I remember duran duran recorded Fx only on to tracks for Wild Boys back in the 80's
@philtipping6 жыл бұрын
+cresshead you can do this easily with an *external* send effect, but the internal one can only be recorded to a separate track by bouncing after the dry recording has been made. The problem is with accessing the output of the FX unit... with an external box, you can easily connect its output to spare input(s), but the internal effect is pre-wired to the stereo bus or bounce bus. You *can* route the stereo bus back into spare inputs but you'd have to be very careful with the various level controls to avoid feedback. The step-by-step guide shown in video 12 shows how to connect an external effect unit.

Yet another well-explained tutorial. Thanks so much for the time and effort Phil! I think I have the machine down now - I just wish there was a USB Midi function for sync purposes and laying down drum parts onto seperate tracks without the use of a DAW. My main issue is cueing up all the parts at the song's starting point. How to come in at the right point when overdubbing new parts and just relying on the ABS or Metronome mode... You mentioned that you use a sync pulse. Is this included within the unit - and if so, where is it and which button do you use - or did you record your own pulse as a short sine wave? Or was this a recording of the metronome?
@philtipping5 жыл бұрын
@Danny Kuperberg thanks Danny, have sent you an email thanking you for the donation - much appreciated. My sync pulses are added before recording them onto the dp machine. If the tracks are already in audio format, I insert a narrow audio pulse - some DAWs allow you to generate a sine wave burst. If you're able to set this up on every track at the same point, then you can visually align these after the transfer by using the Track Edit Move/Paste functions. Similarly, if your source tracks are MIDI files and you have access to a MIDI editor, you can do the same trick by adding a note-on/note-off bleep, again at the same time position for all tracks. These tricks mean you don't have to be accurate in starting the recorder for each pass, but it won't stop any drifting throughout the song. You can still fix these by additional move/paste operations further into the song. These should be transparent if you pick a suitable 'edit' point. Having said that, editing is fairly tedious, so I would recommend using an external sync box as shown in video 13 - they still exist on the 2nd hand market, and these will guarantee the machines start in sync, and remain in sync so matter how long the song is.

Hi Phil, I have the Tascam DP32SD I transferred the "ZZ" files to my computer, when I wanted to return them back to the machine the name of the song came up but when I clicked on "Load" I got a "file error" message. These files will play on my computer but I can not get them back onto the machine. Also, I was interested in purchasing virtual drum software, can I transfer the files as individual tracks straight onto the Tascam without having a DAW? I have tried to do this after watching your video about loading files into the audio depot, however with no success. Help would be appreciated. Paul
@philtipping6 жыл бұрын
+paul Heathfield not sure what exactly you've done. Transferring zz files is *not* recommended. The earlier tutorials explains this, or if you prefer written details, it's all spelt out in the step-by-step guide. If you transferred purely as a means of 'backing up', then you would transfer the whole song folder and its contents. If you wanted to transfer the audio recorded in individual tracks, e.g. for playing & editing on the computer, then you *must* use the Export & Import processes. Transferring wave files from other sources such as your drum software is possible as long as the files are in the same digital format as the song with which you want to use them. You can create songs in one of 4 possible formats (see tutorial 6D on Quality). If the files from the drum software are not in one of these formats, it's still possible as you can convert them first using other software on the computer, e.g. Audacity. Once the files are in a compatible format, copy them to AudioDepot. When you return to the machine, load or create the song you want to use for the files, then go into the AudioDepot menu option. You'll see a list of all files which are compatible with the current song. If you don't see any files, then the file formats do not match the current song. Once you can see the files, you 'select' each one in turn and press Import. It will then give you a choice of which track to use for the file. Repeat for all files. Hope that helps.

@@philtipping thanks Phil. Bang up job on the videos. I'm also from the 2" 24 track universe. I can deal with bouncing to one track as long as it's stereo. Lack of automation means lots of subs, but that's ok.
@PianoDanny5 жыл бұрын
For interests sake Phil: Why do you actually prefer a non-computer-based solution for multitrack recording?
@signals347 жыл бұрын
no need to go through all that.....if you want to record one track, live, with effects, send or guitar effects, you can do this, once you do it though, you can not remove those effects from the track, they become part of the track.... ........do everything the same as normal ,except raise the track slider, of the track you want to record, up, while recording,... what ever effects you have going through the live signal will be recorded on that track....when your done recording, go back turn off all the effects before you playback your track and you will see you have recorded the live signal with the effects you had on... .....
@philtipping7 жыл бұрын
+signals34 When you say "do everything as normal, except..." do you mean you *don't* need to use bounce mode? If so, I don't see how this would work for the internal *send* effect. Unless I'm missing something of course :) Can you show exactly how you've done it? I agree there is no problem with the other 2 effect types, dynamic and guitar, as these can be inserted in the signal path *before* it reaches the recorder, but the *send* effect output does not normally go into the recorder unless you connect a physical cable from the output to a spare input, or use the bounce mode trick as described in the video. The track sliders are on the playback side of the recorder, so if the track is routed to the internal send effect, you will hear the effect when playing back. But this is *not* the same as it being recorded. If you turn off the send effect, you will find the playback no longer contains the effect. I also agree once you *do* record the send effect, you cannot remove it, which is why some people (like me) prefer to add reverb afterwards. But several people have asked how to record reverb live, so as far as I know, the only ways are to use a cable or bounce mode. Ironically, it's much easier with an *external* send effect as the output from this *has* to be fed back into a spare input in order for it to work. There's less danger of feedback, and you can record other tracks as well as the reverb using 'normal' multi-track mode, unlike bounce mode where you can only record a single track.
@signals347 жыл бұрын
oops...sorry....send effects no go on record live.....guitar and dynamic ,yes....my error....bouncing works fine if you want to record with send effects....an external also works well ,like you said, having that extra "effect" option to work with....thanks for all the work you put in making those videos....excellent !!

Yoo man thank you for this ! You're making an awesome job. Thank you a lot ! I got only one questions : 1) When the monitor select is on Bounce, i can't hear the guitar effect anymore, but i'm also not able to hear the other track ; for example if i put an instrumental on Track 2, and a reverb on Track 1 when the monitor is on bounce, i can't hear the track 2. How can i solve that ?
@philtipping3 жыл бұрын
@Nathaniel Molamba thanks for the kind words. Q1: You have to be clear which of the 3 effect processes you mean. The 'block' refers to the guitar insert process. This can be set to be a delay or a chorus, but not both at the same time; there are other effect types but there is no reverb in this process. The send effect can be set to be a reverb or a chorus, but not both at the same time. You can have a guitar effect and a send effect working simultaneously. There's a handy summary of the 3 processes here www.tascamforums.com/threads/dp24-32-fx-definitive-summary-of-effects.4162/ Q2: When you are monitoring the bounce bus, you are hearing all inputs and tracks which you've selected to be the 'source' of the bounce. If you have the guitar block inserted into the path of one of those tracks, you should hear the effect. Don't forget the guitar block can only be inserted into one track at any one time, so if it's not in one of the source tracks, you won't hear it. When you are in bounce mode, the send effect is routed to the bounce bus, so you should hear reverb for all inputs and tracks which have their Send-1 paths enabled. This video is all about using bounce while recording live. This saves time, but you may find there are more options to add effects using bounce *after* recording. Hope this helps.
