G'day All, I have finally thrown the Phoenix off the slope. I have had the Phoenix 1600 for a few weeks now and I sitting at home at about 8.00 pm and could'nt wait any more.... luckily it is daylight savings and the sun doesn't set until late, but I only had a small window of opportunity.
And when you have to fly, you have to fly.....
I do still need to put some colour on to the Phoeix, but there is no doubt this plane is a great choice for slope soaring. I do still need to add in some mixes for crow brakes and I also want to add a setting to allow for full length ailerons by includeing the flaps. Stay tuned for that.
Cheers Michael

Thought I'd share some of Bruce's advice on RC Model Review about taking a little piece of open cell foam and secure it over your mic. It reduces wind noise by about 60-70%. Otherwise, really enjoy your videos.

G'day Mike, good tip. I had since seen Bruce's vid and tried that the next time I went to the slope. Works well. I have unfortunately plunged my Phoenix into the ocean. I added a nice colour scheme, removing the tail to paint. Unfortunately I did not reattach the elevator and neglected to do a surface check (argh). So it is in bits at the moment drying out. Once the replacement spinner and canopy arrive, it'll be back and I hope to get some footage with the foam over the mic. Thanks for your comment, I am glad you like my vids. Cheers Michael

Great madden Michael. Those 1600,s really get going in strong winds. You handled it well too, made it look easy. The sign of a pro I guess. I enjoyed watching your style. Glad you posted a vid. Thnx.

Such a great place and usually ideal conditions for slope soaring. Awesome Michael.

Oh yeah, there is a lot of beach with excellent conditions a lot of the time. We are very lucky to be close by and take advantage.

what makes it great is the plastic fuselage, and the stiff wings

That has definitely helped a few times with less than precis landings. But also I do find it a good balance between some weight and good lift for the prevailing wind off this slope.

Andrew Newton I definitely need practice, it is such a balancing act of speed and altitude. Lots of fun learning.

Really sweet sloping, so glad you take the effort to squeeze a camera on the plane, it makes for such a more dynamic perspective.. great video thanks for sharing👍😎

Thanks Simon, I did pause for a while before the first launch too, should I... shouldn't I... but once I saw it fly, I knew I had to get the cam on there.

+Michael Downie ive watched it a few times now, I am about to order the P1600 as my first glider, I live on the top of a 500 foot hill on the moors so have lots of space and wind 300 days a year, I know very little about gliders and watching you fly I have picked up some tips, you're a good pilot, very smooth, I hope to be half that good some day.

+Michael Downie I fly a racing drone and a medium sized helicopter and I also have a Champ and a J3 Cub, but have nothing good in wind, and as its windy here alot of time a glider is next on my list, there are often gliders flying here and I'm sat in watching waiting for a calm day. I could do with any advice and tips on set up you may have.
@xxMADxMICKxx
@xxMADxMICKxx 7 жыл бұрын
Gail, your flattery will get you everywhere. For my set up I have maximum throws on all the surfaces and 25% expo. The Phoenix is very well behaved. If you are slope soaring, I would recommend adding a Crow brake setting (flaps down ailerons up). I have mine set on a slider so I can add it gradually. But it helps a lot when you want to come in for a landing. I can certainly relate to waiting for calm weather to fly, but the slope soaring really fits the bill. Best of luck and feel free to ask any questions once you get yours and I'll try to help if I can. Cheers Michael

That looked great fun! But I saw your wagon at the start and I gotta go watch your video of that now!!!! B¬) . No video of your car????????????? :'¬(

I think I take the car for granted. I have not made a vid in a while but seems there are a few people that ask about it. Maybe I should make a vid of the car? What sort of stuff would you want to see?

@@xxMADxMICKxx Heh, now I'm kind of embarrassed! I'm guessing it's an Aussie brand, but it doesn't look like any of the Holdens I can find. But I love wagons generally and the one I really love at the moment is the 52 Nash Rambler Wagon. www.barrett-jackson.com/Events/Event/Details/1952-NASH-RAMBLER-STATION-WAGON-170052

Ooo! i think it might be a Ford Falcon wagon! Haven't found the right year yet though. Those tail lights are pretty distinctive.

awesome car, my favorite. would mounting the cam on top reduce aerodynamics or something? can't stand fuselage in picture.

barley dog thanks mate. the old XP gets a lot of attention, I love it. Not a noticable amount of drag with the camera on this plane. I do like some footage with the fuse visible, particularly this one with a shiny reflection of the sun and sky. But generally I like an unobstructed view from the plane. I have the SkyRay for that.... cheers Michael

Michael Downie Thanks really thinking about the 2.0m version for FPV since I have two gliders in the 1.6m size
@xxMADxMICKxx
@xxMADxMICKxx 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah I fly with a few guys that have the 2m and they are very similar. out of the box they both suffer from poor cooling across the motor but easy fix or just limit the run time and glide a lot.
@shckltnebay
@shckltnebay 7 жыл бұрын
Michael Downie what's the easy fix?
@xxMADxMICKxx
@xxMADxMICKxx 7 жыл бұрын
Adding a couple of slots near the motor and also an exit hole toward the rear of the fuse. One of my mates also added some cut down plastic spoons as ducts over the holes to direct the air.
Is the Phoenix 1600 the best slope plane!?
