this man is the exact reason I have gotten better in photography!!
@nathanbgerman4 жыл бұрын
Pretty much any time I am shooting at night (in a city), I always use the exact same settings: 8 second shutter speed, F16 aperture, ISO 100. I will set the camera to these settings just as the sun is setting and then just wait patiently for the sky to get dark enough to give me a proper exposure with these settings. When the exposure meter shows that I am properly exposed, I hit the button (with a timer set like you suggested to avoid camera shake). It gives me a beautiful image every time!
@jaybrown45262 жыл бұрын
Have you ever thought of using a higher quality f-stop? Seems f16 would be a poor choice, especially under low light- given light refraction, softening and what not. Might try using say, f7.1 or f8, and then adjusting your exposure time accordingly. Image exposure results should be the same in theory, but your image will probably be much sharper since you'd be using a better quality f-stop.
@nathanbgerman Жыл бұрын
@@jaybrown4526 Hmmm, I'd be willing to give your suggestion a try sometime. I tend to prefer F16 for two main reasons. 1. I like the star effect that it gives to city lights and 2. These settings usually give me still a little bit of light detail in the sky so you can see clouds and maybe a light glow from the sun below the horizon. If I were to lower the F-stop to something like F8, that would make the image twice as bright and therefore, would require me to wait longer into the evening for the sky to get darker. As the sky gets darker, I then lose those details that F16 gave me. At least, that's my way of thinking, but like I said, I'd be willing to try your suggestion sometime.
@badbeardbill995610 ай бұрын
@@nathanbgermanTheoretically, if you were to use F/8, you’d get 4x the light. Then adjusting your exposure time down to 2 seconds is a good first guess to get the same amount of light. Might be worth a try at least

I've been using a (very old!!!) D3000 for years & years and hardly every take it off auto mode. I've learned more, watching this 14 min video, than I have in the last 13 years lugging this old camera around mindlessly pointing and shooting. I am very happy I found this channel. Now, the photography does not look like a "wild beast" to me anymore. I have watched so many "training" videos from other KZbinrs that were not understandable or confusing for a beginner like myself. Paul Farris explains everything with such clarity and with helpful tips. I am appalled (in a good way) how much I have learned for the past 40 minutes just by watching his three vids. P. S. I think the "dislikes" are left by some pro-photographers, who are afraid that Paul is giving out their true secrets :-)

This may seem a silly question. When you are focusing for a night shot, what do you actually focus on? Presumably it has to be manual focus but do you focus on a point in the distance, middle ground or closer? Can I add that I’m a total beginner at night photography, hence the possibly silly question! I’m in the UK but my daughter and her family have lived in Brisbane for nearly 20 years, so having visited a few times, I love your photos of Brisbane. Thanks for the very informative video.

I know this video is of a P1000, but when I read your comments earlier I thought it was the P900 he used. Looked at the specs, and while the P1000 *is* better the P900 still looks awesome! When I saw some of the results made with the P1000 it honestly made me think it would be a neat 'second camera' (Albeit my budget can't really afford it atm). Now the P900, in my country, is half the price - If I can find one second hand I'll definitely have a tough choice between a new lens, or the P900 😁 That being said: The D5500 is *definitely* something I'd be more interested in 😊 Very nice camera indeed :D
