THIS VIDEO: We as photographers have chosen to operate within a photographic field that is limited in many ways - so it’s best to be aware of what these limitations are in order to maximise the possibilities for self-expression. Our awareness of these limitations is the important in order to have the freedom to create. Photography can suggest a story… or narrative, but it’s impossible for it to provide anything beyond the basic information. Thanks to Stephen Shore - I draw from a talk at The Photographers Gallery in 2010. There are four basic limitations to photography that each contain the seed for creative expression.

Well done, Graeme! Excellent piece, great examples. Perhaps you will go on to talk about each of those 4 elements in separate videos? Certainly would be interested in a whole video on focus.

Great observations. I was intrigued by the comment about the need to solve images as a viewer. I believe one strength of a great image is ambiguity. The dilemma of the 'solution' of an image prolongs the engagement of the viewer. One might return repeatedly to an image to test alternative 'solutions' perhaps. I shall follow your channel with interest.

Thank you I needed this lecture. I currently reviewing faults in my approach to my work as lack of direction, narrative fault and endurance.

@@PhotoConversations Hi Graeme. Thank you for your feedback. I'm tired of not getting out and working on my photography but instead buying optics. Now I'm starting to think about a used Zeiss Milvus 25mmF1.4. But my work always takes during the week.

It is an ongoing process of keeping oneself open to the 3D/4D world and at the same time realising that one is communicating in a 2D manner.
